PS4 HDD upgrade above 2tb , 3/4 tb

so with sonys 3.0 firmware they secretly made 4tb drives compatble , a few people have run cables from the inside of there PS4 other people have ether modded the Caddie or jammed the drive in

i have yet to see a 2.5 drive above 2tb for the PS4 that wasnt just a little bit to big wondering if there is a more elgigant sort of way to get a 4tb drive to fit in the PS4 and the PS4 Pro - not the nayko data bank.

If you keep game updates installed on your drive or use the built in video recording features I could see it as being needed. I had to delete tons of stuff off my stock HDD to install Doom last week.

i do , about 120gigs of it is recordings not many games that i want to delete.

they are alot cheaper then what they were a few months ago but still not there yet - when they are il get one for my PC and one for my PS4
untill then tho im wondering about jerry rigging my PS4 ... or finding a drive the can be shaved down or somthing

Spinning drives can't be shaved: they're airtight and compromising that seal essentially destroys them. 2.5" SSDs can be in that they're just a PCB inside a metal shell, so on drive where the metal isn't serving a thermal purpose, you can shuck the shell and just keep the PCB. Problem is they're priced too high for this to make sense, and they're normally 7mm drives anyhow.

The PS4 supports 9.5mm drives, as I understand it. The largest spinning drive available for each common height is, I believe:

7mm: 2TB
9.5mm: 2TB
15mm: 5TB

The reason is because 4TB/5TB drives require more platters.

It should probably not be expected for large 2.5" SSDs to continue getting cheaper indefinitely, because SATA is essentially deprecated. The major manufacturers have already abandoned it. For example, the Samsung 850 EVO and 850 Pro appear to be the last SATA drives that Samsung will make, since both the 950 and 960 series are NVMe-only.

I cable running from inside to an external enclosure wouldn't look too terrible, seems like that's the only option that will be feasible any time soon.

Pick up the pro. The hard drive is located in the back, so you wouldn't have to hack anything up. Then just run a sata cable out to an external enclosure

that wont do me any good with the PRO tho

are there any enerprise 2.5 drives that would do me any good and arnt price to high ie referbs of some sort ?

Enterprise 2.5" drives are usually SAS, not SATA, and I don't believe anybody is making helium 2.5" drives.

With firmware 4.50 you can use external USB drives now.

Seems that way. 2.5" drives with greater than 2TB capacity are still too thick, and it looks like Nyko canceled its Data Bank Pro addon for the PS4 Pro.

Nyko seems to think the best option for expanding storage on the PS4 Pro would be a USB 3 external HDD.

yea i bought a Pro and am using a 1tb SSD and a 8tb external but you Konw was just interested to know if there were other options
