How/who would it have helped? It was not advertised as "contains the longest cut in cinematic history!!!!!"
Maybe we should fight over film vs. digital, too.
i wasn't taken by either the story or the characters, and i felt the movie ended in a whimper.

Long cuts are a form of cinematographic virtuosity. One of the reason they are so appreciated is that they are so difficult to pull off. Cheating takes some of the value away.

I don't recall there ever being a score card, or a rule book. Although I regularly forget how the best art is that which is created by following rules and norms.

Haha, Clive Owen is awesome

Just watched - Sicario (2015)

Loved this one, good heavy story, well shot and acted, Benicio Del Toro has that De Niro quality that enables him to say a lot with just his eyes... I was glued everytime he appeared on screen... And Juarez resembles my hometown a lot, scary

Moana

The first time I find a film more suitable for a mature audience because it lacks sex.

When a ridiculously masculine demigod and a naive pretty young girl save the world together and they only become very dependable allies, there's something seriously abnormal. I don't think many kids are going to realize and appreciate how both Moana and Maui are wizards, engaged in the most epic kind of quest, in constant contact with the gods, completely beyond lowly impulses like falling in love, and overall not quite human.
Beneath a surface of traditional Disney cartoon features, like plenty of songs, physical gags and funny minor characters, there's one of the most hardcore tales of myth and magic ever seen on the screen, made stronger by reducing traditional patterns of "thrilling" adventure in favor of a pervasive impression that Maui and Moana are up to the task and only mildly in danger. As Megadeth would say, killing gods is my business, and business is good.

Grizzly Man (2005) rewatch. Werner Herzog documentary on amateur bear enthusiast with serious issues (he dead). Haven't seen/heard of? Not spoiler: Timothy Treadwell hung out with grizzly bears in Alaska for twelve summers, until 2003 when one ripped his fucken head off and gorged itself on the fresh meat. He led his GF to the same brutal fate, dampening notions of not only "it's what he'd have wanted uguu~" but also "OWNED LMAO"

What remains is a concise study of a profoundly frail, myopic individual; unsuited to both his world and the wilderness he mistook as refuge. It's not Treadwell's rantings at The Man or cooings over ambivalent grizzlies that stood out this time around, but his mourning the carcasses of prey animals and raging at the lethal indifference of nature itself. Drought, starvation and cannibalism weigh heavy on his unfortunate, doomed mind.

His role in a cute blonde's wretched death aside, the other thing that stops me chuckling too wholeheartedly at Timmy's escapades is his benign obliviousness. To himself, to the bears, to everything really. Wildlife conservation professionals decry his dubious efforts to "protect" his furry friends, and Herzog seems to infer Treadwell knew of such criticisms. I've no doubt he'd huffily deny them, but I'm sure he'd have done so with the best of hapless intentions. It's hard for me to truly condemn or lampoon him, as destructive as his foolishness eventually proved.

An insight into not wild nature but humanity indeed, Herr Herzog. I too believe the natural state of the universe is chaos and murder. I wish someone could've sat Timmy down and explained that to his silly mop head, but I suspect it'd have been futile. 3;

edit: Also not spoiler
Spoiler

Gorehounds will be entirely disappointed, nothing of that sort here. Though Timmy does marvel and paw at a hunk of fresh bear shit. Some impressive wildlife footage from our protagonist, including an awesome display of raw power from a pair of battling males, and a cracking shot of a bee. Ever seen the grizzly clash where one shits itself? Yeah, that one.

You're missing the most obvious wrinkle.

Timothy Treadwell was running away from his own homosexuality.

And like most closet cases, his cowardice destroyed a straight woman's life too, in the end.
Two working class dudes, one black one white, just baked a tray of ten cookies together.

An oligarch walks in and grabs nine cookies for himself.

Then he says to the white dude "Watch out for that black dude, he wants a piece of your cookie!"

Just caught some piece of crap called The Bag Man on TV. Not sure why i ended up watching the whole thing, i guess i was just fascinated by the train wreck that was unfolding before my eyes. Robert DeNiro shows up, making the least amount of effort necessary to get his paycheck, and John Cusack felt like he was looking for his lost career through the whole film.

And what's in the bag you ask? The severed head of John Cusack's girlfriend, murderer by DeNiro. Seriously, fuck this movie.

The Road (2009) - a movie I recall not being able to finish because this one scene around the middle really creeped me out and left an impression on me. Anybody else see this post-apocalyptic drama film?

Amazing, as I'm sure everyone here knows. Not my first time to see it, but I definitely waited far too long. Ambitious camera work like this goes far too unnoticed. Not only inspires me to be a better photog, but to be more like Clive Owen as I age.
Would have helped if the director didn't cheat, though i guess the cuts weren't really noticeable.

"I" of course did not like the film. Interesting visuals and camera techniques aside, i wasn't taken by either the story or the characters, and i felt the movie ended in a whimper.
I couldn't finish watching that movie either. Not sure what wasn't grabbing me. I like the lead actor. Maybe the dystopian future wasn't to my liking or something as it was part of a massive sci-fi movies of this century playlist.

Yes, and read the book. Both are great, and neither particularly easy to get through. I found the book harder to get through b/c the scenes play out slower so you miss no details, and...
Spoiler
I recall them mentioning something about a baby on a spit in the book and didn't see one in the movie.

Storks: ***

A fairly decent if not spectacular kids movie about storks who stopped delivering babies and decided to become Amazon, who suddenly end up with a baby to deliver again. It seems to spend a lot of time dancing around the "Where do babies come from?" question, but I'm pretty sure parents don't want their birds-and-the-bees talk coming from a cartoon. As tends to be the case with a lot of these movies, some of the side characters (the wolves) might be more entertaining than the main characters, and will probably end up getting a disappointing spinoff the next time the studio runs out of ideas.

Train to Busan (2016) Sang-ho Yeon
Fairly slick Korean zombie film. Downside; everybody is crying. All the. Fucking. Time. Gets obnoxious. Christ, I think even some of the zombies were crying in parts

Lake Eerie (2016) Chris Majors
Bad, bad, bad. Lasted eight minutes. The scoring, directing, "acting", all atrocious.
Lance Henriksen is in it somewhere but I was long gone by then.

The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016) André Øvredal
This is from the writer/director of Trollhunter (2010), which is a favourite of mine.
Autopsy was directed by Øvredal but not written by him, which is probably worth bearing in mind if your a fan of his.
First half is superb. Top notch. The great Brian Cox is, as always, on form and the film feels like its moving towards horror greatness.
The second half . . . . oh, Christ. Hollywood slasher shit. Like two separate films. I suspect André Øvredal is not happy :(
Also, Olwen Catherine Kelly as the corpse. Jesus wept

Opus is from Italy, so if I had to take a guess:

L'Ultimo Squalo
Django
1990: i guerrieri del Bronx
Altrimenti ci Arrabbiamo!
Otto e Mezzo

And of those I can really vouch for Squalo the best.

All fine films, to be sure. All though, my favored Bud Spencer and Terence Hill film is Lo chiamavano Trinità. Altrimenti ci Arrabbiamo! appears to be more of a German obsession.

Otto e Mezzo is probably among the greatest films ever made, as far as i'm concerned. A tour de force if there ever was one.

Well, there's films i enjoy because they are fun, and there's films i appreciate because of their objective greatness. Modern films are generally neither great nor fun, and there's nothing worse than something stupid taking itself seriously. I'd rather watch the aforementioned Squalo than 90% of the dross being made today. Sometimes it isn't even a question of lack of creativity. I just find the mindset of modern filmmakers to be abhorrent in itself. It is a poisonous mixture of arrogance and utter cluelessness if not outright stupidity.

Gokseong (by Na Hong-jin, Korea 2016) a.k.a The Wailing or The Strangers

Holy neptunian coconuts! Best horror-thriller I've watched since The Descent.

Rural town in Korea, series of bizarre violent murders, local cops investigate... but don't expect the usual serial killer/psycho story here, this is entirely different.

I won't tell what it's about, nor how the film evolves during its 2h36mn, but I started curious/interested and became captivated.
Only left puzzled by the ending, I can't tell for sure if this was mis-writing or intended, my guess is the latter.

Spoiler for those who have already seen it:
Spoiler
So... did you get who's the actual bad guy ? (assuming he/she's working alone) Is it really the Japanese guy ? The young woman ? I even got to suspect that ghost~y woman has some sort of relationship with the daughter.
And what's the deal with the photos at the very end ffs ? Why does he takes photos and has a collection ? He could be the Japanese's disciple or something...

I haven't seen it in 6+ months so my memory is a bit fuzzy, but from what I recall, the woman was legitimately trying to help the family, the Japanese guy is basically the devil, and the shaman was most likely his assistant. He takes photos of the victims for the demon's collection, I guess. It might be possible that the shaman was trying to help the family until the ritual, which he said must not be interrupted or it could backfire, but that seems unlikely to me since he already had a collection of photos.
Great movie, though, easily one of the top 10 I watched last year.
