So the Samsung Galaxy S8 might come with a desktop Android mode ('Continuum'-like), with multitasking etc. that you can output to any display, maybe with a dock, it's the rumor.

Could it be that too will be more powerful than the Switch ? :P

Nobody cares - it wont play any Nintendo games other than Super Mario Run.

I meant it as out every tech thing people are looking forward to in 2017, the Switch has to be the weakest of all, technically speaking.
That S8 rumor made me think of it because of the similar hybrid nature (sure it will be a considerably more expensive device, but also much more serious/high-tech)

Speaking of weak I hope Nintendo realize the Switch is now assimilated to a portable~handheld by a lot of people, and that 3h battery thing has a potential to utterly destroy the image of the machine on launch day. :?

I don't know guys but does anyone else feel the Switch is pretty much exactly like the Neo Geo X?

Neo Geo X handheld looks identical to the Switch. Not only that it docks into the Neo Geo Docking Station just like the Switch.

Hit me when my buddy of mine Dusted off his Neo Geo X so we could play some games and I was thinking.... will the Switch have the same fate as this machine?

At US$850 vs US$350 it better be more powerful than the Switch - and at US$850 the Switch would be dead in the water from the get-go.
  • Will the Switch satisfy graphics whores? - No
  • Will the Switch satisfy spec whores? - No
  • Will the Switch be powerful enough for Nintendo to put some decent games on it? - well that is up to Nintendo.
  • Will third parties support the Switch - unlikely if they serve the high-graphics/high-spec demographic. In my opinion Nintendo really needs to become more indie friendly - with their tools and their relations - but again that is up to them.
  • Will a sufficient contingent of the mass market adopt the Switch? - in my opinion it doesn't look good. That being said Lego is still successfully selling plastic bricks by maintaining brand awareness through involvement in video games and other entertainment media. So maybe Nintendo can continue to sell gaming hardware by maintaining brand awareness through (likely shallow) mobile gaming. So a glimmer of hope remains.
Xyga wrote:Speaking of weak I hope Nintendo realize the Switch is now assimilated to a portable~handheld by a lot of people, and that 3h battery thing has a potential to utterly destroy the image of the machine on launch day.
Well, that could also be construed as a classification error by that audience. Nintendo's "gimmick" in this case is that the Switch is neither a "home console" nor a "handheld" - it's really too big to be a considered a "handheld" - even if it can be operated as such and it's "gaming-on-the-go" aspect will always limit the Switch's ability to technically challenge the gaming network boxes. In my opinion the limited battery life issue is being overplayed a bit - I've been using an Energizer XPal Power XP4001 (4000mAh) power pack since the PSP/NDS days. If you are already making room in your "backpack" for a Switch then you'll also make room for a power pack (which have been getting cheaper and more powerful in more recent years).

Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

And that's OK - but it seems that a significant segment of the audience who supports the current gaming networks sees video games as the slow, inevitable march toward the holodeck/masturbatorium() experience and it seems to me that Nintendo doesn't want to be part of that particular vision. Personally Nintendo games aren't typically my cup of tea either but I'm even less enthusiastic about the current major, main "gaming" developments on Xbox Live/PSN and in mobile gaming.

Hey some good news: Almost all developers develop to low spec. Because they don't make bleeding edge PC games these days.

They make them for these things called consoles.

The next big leap is the same as the leap everywhere else: cognitive computing. Cheaper to generate content. Eventually NPCs and narratives that can actually bend instead of being locked to a predesignated flowchart.

Look up AI winter. It's a cyclical phenomenon. Last time the game industry gave up because it turned out that multiplayer was a more effective way to achieve an essentially similar effect.

It's not about replacing players in the near term. It's about being able to pay an artist to scribble pictures on a piece of paper and having a machine generate, partially or completely, a $2,000+ art asset.
It's a cyclical phenomenon.
No, it isn't.

The (formerly untractable) problems we solve don't suddenly unsolve themselves. This isn't politics. In the real world, time is not a flat circle.

Even Taylor Swift has functioning eyes on this matter.

"AI Winter" isn't a term about the capabilities and prospects of AI. It's a term about hype cycles of venture capitalism. A very specific hype cycle from the 1970's to 1990's.

There's a bit of a difference between getting excited over some professors at a college playing around on a computer in the 80's, versus players like Google investing deeply into a plan for near-total economic domination of the human species here in the now. A difference between learning the most basic of basic things like the Moravec paradox in a field's infancy, and a field finally maturing a bit after existing a couple decades to actually develop solutions to problems.

You know, I never look forward to new systems. Much happier buying games for consoles I already own. The Sega Saturn was the only exception because it was the first uber cool 3D console for a true next gen gaming, so it was an exciting time.

Some Nintendo games, some franchises they picked up along the way, some rpgs. No Pokemon Stars, no Dark Souls.

I've seen worse.
BryanM wrote:It's uh, really ludicrous to think it'll be priced at 250 when it comes out. The New 3DS is tons less plastic alone and retails for more than that. I'd be very impressed with a cool 300, and expect 350.
Mainly I thought 250 would be silly because they're a business out to take all of our money. 250 today means 175 tomorrow. 300 today means 250 tomorrow, and perhaps an even 220 at the very end of its tail.

An eventually-150 one piece simple portable that just plugs into a tv would have been ideal, of course.

So a price point of $300 and region free. And after all the predictable bullshit speculation occurring in this thread too, Jesus.

Not surprised to see a paid online service though.

I'm really surprised about it being region free tbqh. It's... Nintendo.

lol at having to pay to use the internet you're already paying for. Is that really a thing, like you'll have to pay to do multiplayer on Monster Hunter?

I like portably versions of Fast RMX (basically Fast Racing Neo) and Redout. I haven't played either, but one of them has to be good. Super Mario Odyssey will probably be great because Mario games generally are. Sonic Mania still looks great and this seems it will be the only portable version. Also mildly interested in I Am Setstuna and Rime, both which are only portable on the Switch.

Not enough games to really make me buy one yet though and I'm worried about the lack of Nintendo titles, the lack of huge 3rd party titles, the lack of ports of Wii U titles AND the lack of indies. I feel there should be more of at least one of them.
Skykid wrote:So a price point of $300 and region free. And after all the predictable bullshit speculation occurring in this thread too, Jesus.
I never predicted as low a price ($250) as I saw predicted earlier in this thread. I always thought Nintendo would want a nice profit on each unit sold.

I did predict it wouldn't be region free though. I'm a bit surprised at that one, though I do feel a need to remind people that it might be region free in the same sense as the Vita. That is, for digital titles you'll practically be locked into one region store without a lot of effort.
Skykid wrote:Not surprised to see a paid online service though.
You'll even get one free NES or SNES game each month. That's also probably the pace they'll roll out Virtual Console titles at when they start all over from scratch.

It also seems implied that basic features like voice chat will be handled over a smartphone app.

I was sort of interested in Splatoon 2, but I don't see myself or a lot of other people paying money for Nintendo's online service, so I just don't believe in any sort of active player base on this thing.

^ Sorry, that's not directed at you or anyone in particular, just the general sentiment of "it's going to be just like this and just like this, and won't be cheaper than, and going have this and not this" that's been grating for 16 pages finally comes to fruition - exactly as I counter speculated - to have been mostly bollocks right out the gate.

I have no idea how people can be so conclusive about the strategies and trajectories of unknown hardware based entirely on zero factual input. Speculation is fine, but presentation of speculation could use some work.
