Sports Games thread

Post by PowerofElsydeon »

There's something I'm really curious
And since you guyz seem to have a shitload of knowledge and some of u if not most posess an enourmous library of games I'm discussing it here
You know the magic flavour of fuzboll and air hockey is basicly arcade fire just like the Shmups this forum is mostly dedicated to
If you think about it Soccer Basketball Tennis and that sort of shit would make great arcade games
But we all associate sports games with that ultra realistic shit that is poisoning this industry
I'm not in a mood to critize that all day so....
What I want to say is that the term Sports games kind of carry a negative connotation
And that's sad cause there's games like NBA Jam that just scream like Arcade Fire
I'm not a fan of Basketball at all and I'm confident NBA Jam is one of the best games ever made cause it has Arcade Fire like fun it's hardcore as well and it does not hold back when it comes to take liberties with the sport(sending realism to the shit).
So Sports Games that follow NBA Jam philosophy are on the same level as legendary games like Rayforce or Alien Soldier
So I feel like it's a shame that sports games have potencial to rock the Arcades but they ve gone on different direction
I ve made this thread cause I'm not very familiar with this genre but I want to know everything so what I wanted to ask is...

What do u think of NBA Jam; Virtua Tennis; NFL Blitz; Blades of Steel; Kunio Kun Soccer; Mario Tennis; Mutant Legue Football;Virtua Striker;NBA Street

Wich Sports games would you give a 5 out of 5 rating and why?

And wich Games would you give a 5 out of 5 on the Saturn and Gameboyz?

Why does Fifa Street get average ratings despite it's popularity and Arcade nature?

What do you think of Paperboy for the GB:GBC or GBA
Does it match the Arcade original

If Tempest 2000 was on that Jap Stg difficulty wikia what rating would it likely recieve?

Never been into traditional sports videogames, but I love a few arcade-styled ones. Cosmic Smash (DC) is one of the coolest things ever. Basically squash, in a time-attacking assault course format... emphasises speedy, accurate target destruction. The controls are unbelievably smooth and accurate despite being digital-only. I also find Treasure's Hajime no Ippo (GBA) a far more satisfying boxing game than Punch-Out (NES) - partially for fights being much less pattern-bound, partially for the sheer brutal impact of its hits. Despite the (wonderful) anime styling, its explosive sound effects, guttural voice samples and "red damage" system convey pain. Sega Rally 1995 (M2's PS2 port is AC perfect, Sega's Saturn version remains an intriguing "Black Label" alternative) needs little elaboration. Eternally replayable time attack racer.

Windjammers is obligatory to mention in every sports games thread. Also really enjoy Baseball Stars 2, even though I don't care at all about baseball.

California Games is fun when you have a group of friends at your place for a casual competition.

I like Ice Hockey on the NES and the various primate themed mini games on the Super Monkey Ball series.
I don't live vicariously through teams of helmeted men in tight pants chasing balls very well.
Some of the best shmups don't actually end in a vowel.
No, this game is not Space Invaders.

Sensible World of Soccer. It's fast, fluid and fun.

Seriously, if someone could just put that game on top of Football Manager and give it half-decent CPU AI, it'd be perfect.

Daytona USA

The only sports game I owned and played was Virtua Striker on the DC, b/c I had a friend that basically made me buy it. Had quite a bit of fun over a few beers.

Never been into sports games much but I do like Pro Evolution Soccer series, this one is the most popular and most played in here (especially for multiplayer/competition).

I have a friend who I throw down with in Baseball Stars 2 pretty often.
You're sure to be in a fine haze about now, but don't think too hard about all of this. Just go out and kill a few beasts. It's for your own good. You know, it's just what hunters do! You'll get used to it.

I agree, the Neo Geo has the best sports games. I only watch sports when I'm with friends and I'm really messed up and with Neo titles I can go in sober and have the same experience.

Not a big sports games fan but NHL '94 is one of my very favourite games of all time (all the 2D NHL games are great). It just has so much charm and is incredibly fun to play. To this day I play the game frequently with some buddies, and even organise an NHL '94 tournament every year at my place! I have 2 copies of the game and so I hook up 2 Genesis and there is non-stop action fueled by many beers all day long!

But I need to state that I'm a HUGE hockey fan. Like, an obssesive fan. Yet I think that NHL '94 is so good that even non-sports fans will enjoy it.

Speaking of that : I am somewhat of an oddity. I am both a big-time nerd AND a jock, I play a lot of sports, including a ton of hockey in the winter. If the shmups forums was a real house where we all physically resided, I'd probably be giving wedgies to all of you geeks

Alpine Ski
it's better than SkiFree

speaking of things, shouldn't Ecco the Dolphin count? You've got a dolphin, swimming and jumping through the air; it doesn't get more sporty than that

Nice to know I'm not the only hockey fan here. They still do NHL 94 leagues with updated rosters.

Cool! happy to see a hockey fan on this board as well! Cheers Stevens

And yes I know about the NHL '94 server with updated rosters. I think it's damn awesome! I might try it one day

Nice, another hockey fan! and also player :D
I played my minor hockey from pre-novice up to Bantam, so 7 years too. Still play in beer leagues (that are pretty damn competitive, to be honest)

Mario Golf is really way more fun than it has any right to be. Not 18-holes-in-a-row kinda of fun, but 3 to 6, sure sure. I've heard that Hot Shots Golf for the Vita is comparable.

That's a horror game you know there's very little oxygen in Ecco stop trying to trick the innocent children

Ecco is a survival horror shooter. Like DOOM ^_~

No for real Ecco is legit AAA+ sidescrolling undersea survival horror (not like Kaitei Daisensou), that murky prehistoric ocean shit is a chest-crushing nightmare :O

Image

Get the FUCK away from me you gross-ass Capt. Birdseye boxart rejects! :O

Other honourable mentions:

AKI N64 wrasslin' tetralogy: legit some of the the best 4P brawling ever. Got successively better up to the third iteration, Wrasslemania 2000. Finale No Mercy has many neat additions but I never liked the lower game speed - could go either way tbh. Either way, sort out the vanilla balance kinks with the infinitely flexible create-a-wrassler, then punch the other guy square in the nuts and break his arm when he tries to retaliate. Still the best knocked the FUCK out KO animation ever imo. Erotic violence. Image
