They seriously gonna call it quits after the fourth installment? But there's so many action movie actors out there...

They should've called it quits after the first one.

Re: The Expendables 4 = The grand finale?
First one was rubbish. 2nd one as ok. Not seen the 3rd.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.
Re: The Expendables 4 = The grand finale?
I don't think a lot of people liked the third due to its PG-13 rating...
Re: The Expendables 4 = The grand finale?
Indeed they should! The first one was total garbage that simultaneously entirely missed the beat of the action movies it was trying to tribute.Lord Satori wrote:They should've called it quits after the first one.
For some reason I've actually seen all 3 and the 2nd is the only one that comes close to getting it right and close to being some kind of entertainment.
Anything with Jason Statham in it is going to be trash anyhow, but I expected better from Sly.

They should have called it quits after the 80s or at best the 90s. I have a feeling there won't be a "finale" until they are all actually dead. Keep in mind i grew up on those guys and i love all of them but those Expendables films don't work for me at all, either on a nostalgic level or anything. I'd rather just watch stuff like Predator for the fiftieth time before bothering with any of this stuff.
Re: The Expendables 4 = The grand finale?
But to me The Expendables series is like the action movie equivalent to the Super Robot Wars video game series...

Re: The Expendables 4 = The grand finale?
As skykid points out, it misses the whole point of why people go to watch it.
You expect this type of SAS/Commando/A-Team sort of thing and what you get is something literally too serious.

That's where 2 gets it right, it tries to be serious in places but is overwhelmed by cheesy catchphrases and generally enjoyable nonsense.
Re: The Expendables 4 = The grand finale?
Besides, there's still many other action movie actors that need to be in the franchise. Like Vin Diesel, for example.

I think Vin Diesel would have been about 15 in the 80'sxxx1993 wrote:Besides, there's still many other action movie actors that need to be in the franchise. Like Vin Diesel, for example.

I thought they did a stellar job removing the tennis balls and wheels from the actors' walkers.

I have to say I really like the 2003 Italian Job for some reason, and Jason's in thereSkykid wrote:Anything with Jason Statham in it is going to be trash anyhow, but I expected better from Sly.

That said, the Expendables is a soulless money grab.
It was probably the very first blu-ray I ever bought so during the first watch I was probably distracted by the wizardry of HD video and the old bookshelf speakers+sub that replaced my crappy PC speakers.
Couple of years later, watching with a friend, so disappointing.

CHECKPOINT!

Look at Vin Diesel right now, though. He's already doing The Fast and the Furious, Riddick, and xXx. There's even a character from the Contra series that's modeled after Vin Diesel, named Mad Dog. That's why I want Vin Diesel in the Expendables.neorichieb1971 wrote:I think Vin Diesel would have been about 15 in the 80'sxxx1993 wrote:Besides, there's still many other action movie actors that need to be in the franchise. Yes, but you understand that when Stallone started these projects it was about re-activating the 80's muscle actors who were never superseded. Vin Diesel would not qualify, but then again nor would Jason Statham, but I think he got in there because Stallone wanted some fresh blood in there as well. I don't think with Vin that the cap fits.xxx1993 wrote:Look at Vin Diesel right now, though. He's already doing The Fast and the Furious, Riddick, and xXx. And how wouldn't Vin Diesel fit in the Expendables?

Re: The Expendables 4 = The grand finale?
You know, I watched Terminator Genesis at the Cinema and there is a scene where "Bad Boys" starts playing. There is no reason that wouldn't fit in a action sci fi movie, except this was the Terminator franchise. Where its very existence not only makes you hate the movie, but you want to puke up all over it because it basically took a big dump on your own vision of what a Terminator movie should be.
So, Vin Diesel would have that kind of an effect on me in an Expendables movie.

Re: The Expendables 4 = The grand finale?
You've got a point with Statham there.xxx1993 wrote:And how wouldn't Vin Diesel fit in the Expendables?
I don't know why it is that Hollywood can't find somebody who can write one-liners like they did in the '80s. They weren't high literary art; they just worked!
And I agree these films get "serious," at least in one way: The plots are overcompensating. Most great Arnie films are quite simple, plot-wise, and they consistently build up to something worthwhile. If memory serves, Expendables 2 gets sidetracked with some human rights storyline that, if they had thought it important, probably should have been in the center from the start - just the way Commando boiled the drug wars down to an infinite ammo shooting rampage against Columbo

Also, "candy asses." I don't know 'bout you guys, but I suspect The Rock should be believed here.neorichieb1971 wrote:You know, I watched Terminator Genesis at the Cinema and there is a scene where "Bad Boys" starts playing. We should have John Cena in there as well; after all, his time is now.

I think John Cleese should be in it.

Oh come on, no Brits allowed. At least no Brits that are actors. Unless you're suggesting he be the villain?
Steve Martin would be a good choice. Johns Candy & Belushi are dead, and what are the surviving Ghostbusters cast doing these days? Bill Murray seems to be in dire straits, reduced to stealing potato chips from strangers.

Re: The Expendables 4 = The grand finale?
I don't mind having someone British as the villain. They tend to do this all the time, as mentioned by Ben Kingsley, Mark Strong, and Tom Hiddleston in that 2014 Jaguar commercial.
