So far:
1. Street Fighter V
2. Raiden V
3. Caladrius Blaze (PS4)
4. Dark Souls III
5. Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE
6. Overwatch
7. Doom
8. Odin Sphere
9. Ratchet & Clank
Kusoge of the year: Tie between Platinum's TMNT and Zero Time Dilemma

Raiden V and Caladrius Blaze's positions are pretty interchangeable for me. Both games have different strengths and weaknesses, but I think I prefer Raiden's style a bit more.

I still need to put more time into Final Fantasy XV, Pokemon Sun, and Rhythm Heaven Megamix, so I'll leave them out for now. Besides that, I've caught up on most of the games that interest me. There's just Forza Horizon 3 (dunno if I'll play it, might be too much of a time sink), The Last Guardian (renting it next year), maybe Wild Guns, and Let it Die, which wasn't on my radar, but its reception makes me want to try it out. I've just been too busy with other stuff lately.

2016 being a horrible year is a pretty hot meme right now, but it's been great for me between all the games, music, movies, and wrestling. 2017 is looking good, too.

Not sure if I should count ports like Garegga.

Probably Furi, Odin Sphere, Dark Souls 3, something something I have no sense of time or chronology.

i haven't really played many games from this year. let it die is definitely up there for me though. it's got its fair share of flaws, it's very grindy, combat is not exactly what you would call refined, the loading screens are really long considering it's only loading small areas at a time. but it's very compelling to play. climbing the tower gives me a similar feeling to when i first played dark souls 1, often having to weigh up if i wanted to try and push on and find the next elevator or if i should just go back and level up and consolidate what i have. although i guess that is something common to all rogue likes where you have a town or whatever you need to get back to. i haven't really played any / many of those kind of games though.

dark souls 3 is good too. it's the most polished of the souls games, but like many things from this year it's a bit too "member? oh yeah, i member".

not sure i've actually played anything else from this year that i rate...... but i may just be forgetting stuff.

Haven't noticed anything notable, so I'm gonna go with the obvious and say Dark Souls 3, too. At least it wasn't a letdown like DS2.
Zero Time Dilemma and FFXV were both games I had been looking forward to, but ultimately disapointing. Haven't played The Last Guardian yet.
Did anything cool and arcade-like come out, that I missed?

next year is definitely looking like it's going to be a much better year for new games than this was.

Two games released this year that I have tried once: SF V and KOF XIV. The latter was more fun.

Odin Sphere is not a port, its remake who's mechanics and combat system are so different from the original that it might as well be a sequel.

For arcade style stuff I think Furi and Blue Revolver are quite good.

1. Dark Souls III
2. DOOM
3. The Last Guardian

I really enjoyed Odin Sphere as well, but it's not quite new.

The next few months look more interesting, with Nier and Nioh.

Out of all games released this year I've played I can only count Furi, Mecha Ritz: Steel Rondo, and Xanadu Next amongst my favorites.
So little time, so much games to play. Hopefully I can at least finish Ace Combat 3.

You shut your mouth. Automata is being worked on by a dream team and will be the best thing ever, just you wait. It's the only fucking thing I've been ever truly hyped for in years and I won't be let down this time. I definitely won't.

How come? It's looking pretty good.
I guess we'll have a much better idea when the demo drops, this week.

Nier has the best story I've ever seen in a game, so I'd probably be disappointed if I were expecting the new one to match or surpass it. I'll be happy as long as it doesn't feel like they're pandering to fans of the original. I think Taro Yoko is better than that, though. At least the OST already sounds great and the combat is guaranteed to be much better.

Mainly because of that. It looks so promising it's very easy to get disappointed. And because every other game I've been hyped for the past few years ended up not really delivering.

Also, I guess Nier's rugged awkwardness is a huge part of what made it special. If anyone is able to make a near-AAA experience while still maintaining the charm of the original Nier, it's Platinumgames, but I wouldn't be too surprised if the game still ends up being too polished and streamlined for its own good.

Yeah, I wanna play Let It Die, too. Hopefully a PC version will come out next year.

It's nice of them to make a $0 game just for me. Very kind people, them.

I think I've only been playing old titles this year. No new titles that are GOTY material, though I am optimistic about The Last Guardian (which I will play after Christmas).

If remasters count though, it's easily Odin Sphere Leifthrasir.

Doom is probably the worst 2016 game I've played.

I have a few pending for xmas but right now, probably riding the nostalgia train, is Deus Ex: Mankind Divided

Doom was cool but having nearly all the combat in enclosed areas of "clear waves until they stop" took the atmosphere away. Classic Doom was tense as fuck but carried it outside of combat. You never knew what was waiting for you as you backtracked with the key, or whether a cacodemon was going to drop down behind you.

Yep, this. It's fun, but I don't understand why no FPS these days will mix up the level design. Shadow Warrior remake was similarly disappointing in that regard. Actually felt that the two Wolfenstein games were much better in that respect, but still too damn linear.

I also thoroughly enjoyed Human Revolution. Played a hell of a lot of Downwell and Pac Man 256, kind of enjoyed Souls 3,though fatigue was setting in by now.

Spent most of the year on Spelunk and Driveclub.

Looks like the only games I've played this year that actually came out (in Europe, at any rate) this year too have been Samorost 3 and Odin Sphere Leifthrasir. And, uh, I guess the Wii U version of Axiom Verge too? Expected to play Half-Genie Hero but I got my code for that like yesterday and I won't be back at my Wii U until like a week from now so I probably won't play that until after New Year's anyway.

This is exactly why I don't do Game of the Year lists anymore.
My 1CCs so I can find the list easier myself

Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

but samorost 3 man... it might not have hit you like it hit me, but it was so charming, with an amazing soundtrack (one of my favorites of 2016), and puzzles that I actually enjoyed. on top of being a beautiful environment and leagues ahead of samorost 1 & 2, I played it co-op during a flight and while winding down at night away from home and loved it.
even more so than their last releases machinarium and botanicula.

pocket card jockey was close to my #1 for the immense amount of time I spent on breeding horses and playing speed solitaire, but samorost 3 won me over.

If you haven't, I recommend playing the original Doom first. Regardless of whether you like fps or not, it's still a must play for all gamers and probably the closest you'll come to a 3d shmup.

I didn't like Doom, back in the day. I'm weird like that.
