PS2 Deinterlacer - PVM and Upscaled to LCD

Post by noonan2678 »

Hey Guys,

I've been playing more and more PS2 games lately and curious about option to deinterlace the 480i titles. I'm running one PS2 via SCART to my 2950Q, then another with component into a Crystalio then out to an LCD.

So, first, is there any reason at all to do this before hitting the Crystalio or is it essentially doing everything that can be done anyway?

Second, for the PVM, what options would be best? I'm using GSCART switches, so would think that deinterlacting prior to hitting the switches would be the way to do it.

Last, is this all worth it? Not money-wise, but result.

Thanks so much!

By deinterlacing you mean 480i to 240p ?

To properly do this you need to go to 480p first. From there you can use a scan converter to output 240p.

Then there's the direct conversion from 480i to 240p by using the line offset trick (with the Extron interfaces). Works, but doesn't look good on genuine 480i titles.

Well, 240p to the PVM would be ideal, but for the Crystalio, just giving it 480p was what I was thinking. Just wondering if there's a HW solution that would serve just that purpose.

then I don't fully get the question. The CII has a quite good deinterlacer for 480i material, so I'm not sure why you would want to take that task to another box ? The only better 480i deinterlacing is to be found on the Framemeister, since it's optimized for graphics instead of video.

I guess that was the question in this case...how does the CII stack up against devices more purpose built for this. Is the Frame a significant step up?

With regards to the PVM, I do have a Mimo...would it make sense to try and get the signal through there for 240p?

The FM is able to keep the visible pixels intact, so a static image from a 480i will look like true 480p. The CII offers a smoother result. If you have a game which you can manually switch between 480i and 480p you can see the difference. Even if the CII's deinterlacing is very good, the deinterlaced 480i picture will look very different than it's 480p counterpart.

240p isn't a good match for every title. Some titles benefit from it, others will lose too much detail.

Interesting. I do have the d-sub (?) component adapter, so will give that a shot at some point to check it out. I'd imagine that would be the way to connect it, right?

Makes sense for sure. The PS2 output is just something we have to live with, I guess. Sucks as I'm getting back into a lot of the games and not happy with the vid output.
The 240p titles look AMAZING through the CSII.
