PS3 Sound Settings question for a HDMI 5.1 setup for Fat PS3

Post by Lawfer »

When I set my PS3 Sound Settings setup, to "automatic" the PS3 goes ahead and selects everything except "AAC", so everything in Linear the PCM category is selected, meaning all the 2ch, 5.1ch and 7.1ch options, my setup is 5.1, so should I disable all the 7.1 options to be sure that I get 5.1 Linear PCM output or will it be detected that my setup is 5.1 and only send me 5.1 sound?

Your AV receiver probably either supports downconverting 7.1 to 5.1, or has support for the extra speakers, so it's reporting 7.1 support to the PS3. You can either let your receiver downconvert (assuming it supports that) or just disable 7.1 on the PS3.

Is it really necessary to disable 7.1 seeing as how only very few games actually support 7.1? In most cases even when all the Linear PCM outputs are checked on the PS3 what's being output is actually 5.1, so based on that even if my setup is 5.1 and all the Linear PCM outputs are checked, in most case the output would still be Linear PCM 5.1 because the games only support that.

Here is the list of PS3 games that support 7.1:

Just disable 7.1 to be on the safe side. 5.1 LPCM is what you want for games.

Can't you just start a game in 5.1, listen to it, start a game in 7.1 then compare? If can hear a difference, choose the best sounding one. If you can't, does it really matter?

I would think 5.1 is the right choice at any rate.
