Mayflash SS question

Post by J-P »

Hey guys - this isn't really shmup related... but I figure people on here would know.

I have a Mayflash SS adapter (the type with 2 saturn ports to USB). So far it's been great, I'd definitely recommend it.

Question is - has anybody tested this with a multi-tap? I'd test it myself, but I don't have any multi-taps lying around. I was thinking of having a bomberman session, and acquiring some multi-taps, obviously don't want to if it won't work.

For the record I own the console and originals anyway but I've been playing all my saturn stuff on Mednafen recently, which is great - even Garegga works a charm (blank menu screens aside). I can keep all my originals in their boxes stuffed in the cupboard

I'll speculate until someone shows up who actually knows what they're talking about.

My guess would be no. I don't imagine your emulator reads the input from a USB controller the way a Saturn controller port reads original controllers. Therefore, whatever multiplexing is going on between the tap and original controller ports to make the extra pads work is likely going to be lost in translation.

If anything, I would think an emulator developed enough to allow 5p-and-up gameplay would be reading multiple USB inputs and then sending them to processing the way the multitap would. If there's any documentation for how your emu handles games like Bomberman, your answer on how to set it up is probably there.

I'd be surprised if it works because the device is just converting Saturn pad inputs into a USB gamepad. I doubt it'd process to another 4 gamepads if you plugged a multitap in. You'd probably have more luck with a second Mayflash adapter to generate two more gamepad devices but even then I echo the "check how the emulator handles inputs" sentiment.

There are issues with the Mayflash DC USB adapter that doesn't recognise all the buttons on the arcade stick, so they probably only designed this early kit to run with standard pads.

I realised it was probably a bit of a stupid question after posting it :| but yep, I can confirm that Windows reads the inputs as USB Gamepad 0 / USB Gamepad 1 - so I'm sure it wouldn't work. I'll have to settle for a bunch of various pads or using the actual console then methinks. Now to fire up the old CRT projector.
