A second chance

Post by Gozer »

Just recently I decided to grab my big ol' box of NES games and give Zelda II: The Adventure of Link a second chance. This game never really clicked with me back in the day. I'd always get up to the first palace and just turn it off. I would never even try to beat horse head. I told myself that this time I will at least play through the first two palaces. I did. Then the rest followed. I was pretty entertained through out the whole thing. It made me wish that I did not just brush it aside as a kid.

Anyone else recently or plan on giving an NES game a second chance?

man... Zelda II, i just love the music in that game.

anywho, i intend to get my hands on a working nes as soon as possible, and when i do i will most certainly play the crap out of guardian legend.
i never really played it when i owned a nes, just the first level and then it got too hard for me. (i was a noob, still am ;))

Let's see here....games I took a second look at...

NES:

Kid Icarus -- Very nice music in the last stage if I do say so...Mega Man meets Link if anything.

Rad Racer -- Strangely enough this game was made by Squaresoft...!!! I actually managed to get to stage 3 without the timer running out on me.

Batman -- I don't know why I keep coming back to this game...it's the music most likely, because I keep dying at the first boss...

Snake, Rattle N' Roll -- Strange Elvis rip-off from Dimension X? Or fun 3D platformer, you tell me. Still can't beat that lousy final boss though, even with Game Genie.

Metal Gear -- I both love and hate this game with a passion!!!

Super Dodge Ball -- I usually hate sports games...but when you can clobber a guy with a vollyball at speeds in excess of 90 mph, loads of fun, and the music's nice too.

Sega Genesis:

Kid Chameleon -- nice alternative to the Mario Bros. formula, even if I never beat it.

PSX:

Blast Chamber -- A bomb strapped to your back you run around and solve puzzles...wonder what that reminds me of...

Intelligent Qube -- Played a demo of this a while back...both engaging and somewhat scary to visualise...hard to really get into though.
The world would be a better place if there were less shooters and more dot-eaters.

Jesus' BE ATTITUDE FOR GAINS:
1. Pure, Mournful, Humble Heart
2. Merciful Peacemaker
3. Suffer for Righteous Desire

I killed Killer Moth the first time I played the game without even getting hit by accident he's so easy. :P

You want to use the batarang weapon. When the battle starts just hang out here are and get between the fireballs he shoots out. Right after he does that he'll swoop down at the center of the screen and fly back up to the top again. As soon as the fireballs pass by you just walk forward a bit and throw as many batarangs as you can (you'll hit him five or six times easily).

Do this twice and he's dead.

If you think that's hard though wait til you see the later bosses and levels! The game reminds me of Ninja Gaiden on the XBox in that it's mercilessly difficult at first but as you play it more you get so good you'll go through entire pieces of the game without even getting touched. The soundtrack gets better and better as do the level designs so it's worth getting through.

What I do with that guy is just stand on the left side of the screen and chuck batarangs whenever he swoops down. Neo Rasa's method sounds a lot faster, though. I like Batman a lot, too- for some reason it reminds me of Shadow of the Ninja and Shatterhand quite a bit- enemy design, level layouts, everything. The bit I always die on is in the sewer level when those big guys jump out at you- they're pretty hard to dodge.

I've been playing a lot of Iron Tank on the NES lately. This game is pretty fun - not nearly as good as Guerilla War, but different enough to make it enjoyable. You gotta love the alternate routes and the Metal Gear-esque radio too. I wish the control scheme was better, but oh well.

One game I have tried time and time again to get into is Bionic Commando. I know everybody loves this game, but for some reason I just don't find it enjoyable. The overhead portions are a chore and the side-scrolling bits just feel weird to me, probably because of the lack of jumping.

yeah, i was crushed when i couldn't get into it. i am ninja five-0s biggest fan, and while i knew the basic concept of bionic commando, i'd never played it. tracked it down (after a fashion), and was disappointed.
