New Super Mario Bros. DS out on May 7th!

Post by Xexyz »

For those not in the know (I doubt there are very many), Nintendo Power has issued the fact that the New Super Mario Bros. title being developed for the Nintendo DS will be released on May 7th. Now, I know, people might be thinking that's just a JPN release date, and that our EU/NA dates will be later. Well, for EU, that might be true, but for NA I doubt it. Nintendo Power is a U.S. based magazine, so shouting out release dates for other territories just wouldn't make sense.

Also, May 7th is a Sunday. Most normal releases are on Tuesdays, but Nintendo has a habit of releasing some of their high profile items on Sunday. Could this perhaps be a simultaneous launch along side the DS Lite?

IGN reports that May 7 will be the U.S. launch for both New SMB and DS lite.

Initial impressions are positive and screens look good. Now let's hope they don't water down the challenge (see Princess Peach)

While it can't be argued that the game is easy, I heard that the IGN review of Princess Peach sucks.

It makes perfect sense that they'd release the new SMB with the new DS. Nintendo wants to pure pwnage Sony. I'm keeping an eye on this game, so it better turn out to be a challenge. 3 items in reserve doesn't convince me too much tho.

Mario Bros. was the main reason I bought a DS, so I'm definitly looking forward to this badboy. Who knows, maybe it'll sell well and we'll get a Revolution 2D Mario game someday.

Hmm.. It doesn't look that much better than Donkey Kong Country 1 & 2 on the SNES, but I'd take this any day instead of another Fifa XXXX game.

Ths scene looks interesting.

Yeah well DKC 1&2 on SNES looked WAY better than Super Mario Bros 3 on NES, but can't be allowed even near the shadow of that game.

Having seen a few vids of the game now I can say it does look way better than DKC SNES though.

Oh and this could possibly be THE biggest DS game! About THE most popular game series of all time finally gets a "real" sequel.
I am psyched for this, and this is my most anticipated game of the year (surpassing every shmup announced, though UD comes close ;))!

I agree on the Fifa thing btw... :)

What's "UD" by the way? I've been under a rock for some time now... ;)

Umm... do you mean the graphics or the gameplay? Because if it's the gameplay, I really don't see how you came to that conclusion.

Graphics obviously.
I've never played it to know about the gameplay...

I think you're recalling Donkey Kong Country cos those screenshots are shitty. That fuzz effect brings to mind what happens when you cram the work of SGI workstations into a console that has no business displaying that nonsense.

Well, graphically DKC 1 & 2 are the best things I've seen on any 16-bit system (Maybe even better than some 32-bit stuff on the Saturn). The sand-paralaxing in the water levels in DKC 1 & 2 was amazing; music & gameplay through out the game were superb.
Generally I enjoy the DKC series a bit more than the Mario series.

Sonic => DKC > Mario.

I thought the DKC games took a huge step backwards in gameplay as far as platformers go, but hey!

I don't know which way DKC took a step but it was an awesome one.

On the bottom-center of flyer above, it show Mario bouncing off a wall same way as the Batman sprite would in the 1st Batman game, on the 1st stage of the NES game.

I loved that feature!
One of the reasons I got that game for my NES back in 1990!

I just hope they don't make it easy to get the Bonk 3 size Mario repeatedly. 'Cuz that would take the difficulty down a notch considerably. And here's also hoping Miyamoto and Tezuka (assuming he is involved) aren't telling the EAD devs that they're making the game "too hard." :?

Hopefully the game will be really hard. Hard but fair.

Well, no Mario game is overly difficult. I just want it to be on par with the challenge of SMB 1 or 3.

The first one with no warping is tough and them Lost Levels (the real SMB2) are absolutely cuntly difficult IMHO.

True, definitely difficult with no warping and then factor in the looping "maze" castles. Yeppers. I should also be ashamed to temporarily forget Lost Levels as I have been playing it on my SMB DX GBC cart recently.

Man I love SMB The Lost Levels. One of my favourite games. Awesome. The only thing I found to be really unfair is the hammer bros walk towards you. Anyone who can 1 credit that is totally wild.

Is that the one that Pink Godzilla had running on the FDS system at their booth at NWCGE? If it is, that one is seriously tough.

New SMB lead and long time Nintendo producer-director Takashi Tezuka says:

http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3148479&did=1
"[after the original] ... Mario evolved, of course, but it eventually became more difficult and suited more toward hard-core gamers," he says. "I didn't want to continue in that direction. That's not to say this game isn't for hard-core players, but I want to recapture the spirit of the original Super Mario Bros."
Um. OK. Hopefully that means "It will be harder than our more recent Mario games but not too hard."

Story also says the game will have branching paths to explore like SMW and there are at least a few "secret power ups" not yet revealed. Now let's hope they give us a real map screen to go with those branching paths.

The man is a walking paradox.

"...it eventually became more difficult and suited more toward hard-core gamers,"
What? I thought Mario Sunshine was for pussies.

"I want to recapture the spirit of the original Super Mario Bros."
The original is more difficult than Sunshine.
