Sony PVM vs GVM

Post by magus90 »

Hello,

First post here. And i was wondering if anyone knew the differences between the GVM 2020 and the PVM 20M2MDU?

Not even specifics but just the GVM vs PVM lines in general? Are they of similar quality picture wise?

I have a PVM but can get a NEW gvm for a good price and was wondering if i should go for it. But with no way to test it out in person, i am not sure if by getting the GVM i would be downgrading from the PVM?

Thanks in advance for any help, i really appreciate it

IIRC correctly, the GVMs were aimed at computers from the late 80's early 90's era. It's multiformat 15kHz & 31kHz, but I have no idea about in between, for say 25kHz 384p arcade games. The TVL is a fraction lower than your PVM, but if the GVM is new, it'll probably look nicer. And it can do 480p if you ever want it to. Actually it'll do a fraction above that. But it won't take component (YPbPr) where the PVM does, and it doesn't look like it has an RGB passthrough for daisy-chaining sets if you need that.

RGBS & RGBHV are both fine for the GVM, if that means anything to you.

EDIT: It's probably NTSC-only for the composite video lines, unless you're in EU, in which case it might be a PAL-only model. Doesn't matter for RGB, as that's region-free. There's a whole host of other tiny differences in the controls, but unless you're already having issues with, say, screen position, they probably won't change your life.

Thank you! I am just gonna be using 240p and 480i consoles from the NES-Gamecube era.

480p would be nice, but not necessary as the PVM i have can't do it either. Daisy chaining is not important either as i have a GSCART scart switcher.

I am mostly concerned with the image quality. When i first got my PVM recently i was literally in awe of how good my games looked. I am just hoping the GVM can live up to that image quality.

Thanks for the reply

I edited my post above with a little more info.

If you get the GVM and it's not quite as nice (and it'll certainly be close) you could always sell it.

Yeah, 540 TVL vs 600 i believe. Probably a subtle difference.

I can get a brand new GVM which is the major selling point, having a brand new untouched monitor. Not sure how easy it would be sell, especially locally though.

Well i have some thinking to do. I intend on getting another 20" PVM anyway as a backup, so the decision is do i spend a couple hundred more and get a brand new GVM instead? Tough one.

Thanks a lot BTW

Did you read Skips' experience with a GVM-2020?

I hadn't seen that. Doesn't sound so rosy now :( You can bet he was shipping the netter units out first too. If you're going to buy, do it via paypal. That way if it's not *exactly* as described, you're entitled to your money back.

Thanks for this! This is the same exact guy i was gonna buy from. You helped me dodge a bullet there.

I had the same experience as Skips. Dave was one of the most arrogant and weirdest guys i have ever spoken with. I couldn't get him off the phone. He just talked for 35 minutes about himself and basically why he is the best at everything even without a high school degree. It was weird.

Thanks for the heads up, gonna stick with my PVM and maybe buy a backup.
