Re: Little things that annoy the hell out of you
So we're all aware of the overbearing circlejerk around savestating through "retro games" and how it frees emulator users from playing through the same segment multiple times, allowing them to get back to their busy adult lives.
Is there some reason that people do this instead of, you know... not playing games that involve practice and repetition? Because we had those back in ye olde "8-bit" days.
This also applies to people who complain about grinding and random battles.
EDIT: Because nobody still uses ZSNES.

the only thing i'm sick of is the retro arcade scanlines crt ORIGINAL HARDWARE REAL EXPERIENCE HARDCORE NO SAVESTATES circlejerk
can't be a coincidence that those people usually suck dick at said games
let people play however the fuck they want and stop influencing kids like atheistgod, at this rate he'll end up with no friends crying in the middle of his retro hardware collection
no one complains about TAS people doing games frame by frame, if they just want to savestate through it then whatever

Re: Little things that annoy the hell out of you
I shouldn't have to point out that people who perform tool-assisted speedruns and people who just play games to play them have very different goals. TAS is less a test of "regular" player skill as it is in programming.
The endorsement of playing on original hardware is necessary if only to keep the unwashed masses from thinking that old games were in widescreen or some other such nonsense. We are, after all, fighting a losing battle against incompetent Twitch streamers and Let's Players.
If you want to play in 16:9 with cartoon shaders on, I won't stop you. Just keep it the hell to yourself instead of raving about how it makes old games "better".
And you know damn well that it isn't AG's gamer habit scaring people away. As I and others have said before, he wouldn't be any better off liking "popular" things.

Hehe, that's almost as fun as people who play their highly lagging NES on a widescreen TV then claim that's "It's now in high-def".
As long as we're bitching about the unwashed and video displays...
How about trying to play your NES on a friend's TV with really really bad upscale lag?
*WARNING* *WARNING* A HUGE ANNOYING SITUATION
----------
P_O: This game is lagging pretty bad, your TV can't upscale the picture to keep up with the console.
Friend: Lol! This is a new TV! That console is like from 30 years ago.
P_O: Yes, the computer inside your TV can't stretch the tiny picture quickly enough to fit it on the big screen, there is upscale lag.
Friend: What? You don't know what lag means, we're not even playing online.
P_O: Does your TV have a game mode?
Friend: I can't check you're not supposed to mess with the setting on a new TV for a month after purchasing it.
P_O: What the devil are you talking about? Who told you this? I'm not going to play Galaga on TV like this.
Friend: Well what do you want to play then?
P_O: Just pop in Call of Duty on your 360 and end me. (defeated)

Usually, this is kind of stupid. People who zip individual MP3s are the worst in particular.Xyga wrote:People who a make rar/zip for sharing a file while the compression only makes it a few MB smaller, and they're not even using password protection.

On the other hand, sometimes file hosts don't allow certain formats but will gladly take the file in an archive [for example, you can send .EXE files over gmail if they're 7zipped].

The worst is when the recipient's OS "hides known file extensions".
And they can't manually change the file extension you've put on a program to get it through their Gmail inbox.
Only perpetuates file type ignorance and is a security hole for accidentally executing malicious program files.

No, I was planning on going over, saying in one or two sentences that it has this cool signal called "RGB" and that it's higher quality, then hooking everything up and playing Super Mario World, Super Star Wars, and BioMetal. I know normal people don't give a shit about that stuff. He does care about input lag, though.Bananamatic wrote:retro gaming

Re: Little things that annoy the hell out of you
This. I have never understood why people buy retro gear, plug about 60 converters and image capturing devices and upscalers. After remortgaging the house 3 times, they have a system that now displays the same games about 25% sharper. Woo hoo! Give yourself a medal.retro gaming that means playing the games not bringing your super cool display and going on for hours about how superior the display quality is and how you absolutely need RGB
Or the other flip side of this, the PVM monitor. Lets go on road trips to buy a monitor that might not work in 6 months time, has almost zero chance of getting fixed without a time machine. But to hell with it, I gotta have it because someone on the internet found a mint condition NOS model. Then suddenly its like black friday for a PVM.
If you look at most of the threads in this forum, most of them revolve around lag, image quality and buying a box that plugs into a box that plugs in to a box.
5% of the threads are people ACTUALLY playing games.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

It might. But this forums chatter is about boxes, not about games. If the boxes have settings menus or buttons, your in a world of twiddling... Don't get me wrong I believe in making something better. But your paying for the science to be done for you. In this RGB centric world of retro videogames the science is left for you to do. The worlds 3 biggest problems. 1) World peace, 2) Cancer Research 3) Getting 240p perfectly displayed on your new TV.WelshMegalodon wrote:I just assumed that, after 80+ hours in Dodonpachi Daifukkatsu or whatever, a slightly sharper picture would make a world of difference to the player.neorichieb1971 wrote: This. I use save states when emulating old games, so i don't have to play the same segment multiple times.
Problem?
For instance, i put a savestate down on each of Dracula's forms in Castlevania III so I could understand and practice them individually, before putting it all together in a full run of the stage. This is so i don't have to repeat the balls hard stage only to be insta-rekt cause I haven't internalised what I'm supposed to do.
Time saving is more of a bonus than the goal. I use that time saved to.. play more games =]
Or pretend I'm a busy adult etc etc whatever that reference is about.
Also i have been known to go through some areas in 16bit jrpgs with the fast foward button held.

Honestly, state saving ruins games. But not like all games are great. But when and if you do accidentally ruin a game via state saves that you later greatly fall in love with, well, great regret you do feel.
Castlevania III got brought up. I'd never state save such a classic and would do everything to prolong it's greatness. Yeah, I still haven't beat this game. But why hurry when I can savour the experience more by avoiding the state saves, the easier Japanese version, the easier route and characters. Having fun playing and replaying games is where it's at. Once that ending comes, just means you sooner have to part with your love. And I want to go all night long.

Well Welshy I mainly wanted to offer a counterpoint and give an example of save state use that doesn't completely cheese the game.
Other uses are: save state at the continue screen in classicvanias at the end of a session so you don't have to dick around with passwords.
Or after dying then farming back to full health in Metroid, so you don't have to spend ages getting all that health back after the next death. This is to avoid tedium, not for freeing up precious adult time (tm)
No, that would be mental performance enhancing drugs like adderall or whatever the doc has put you on.
States are more similar to shadowboxing, training, sparring.
I get where you guys are coming from with the aversion but it's really not as absolute. I have a friend who relentlessly states his way through classicvania, megaman etc and I've given up trying to get him to do 'legit' runs.

I can respect that. Personally such an approach is not for me cause nothing stops me replaying the game from start to finish armed with the knowledge I have, but if this is how you get your enjoyment then have at it.Sinful wrote:Yeah, I still haven't beat this game. But why hurry when I can savour the experience more by avoiding the state saves, the easier Japanese version, the easier route and characters. Having fun playing and replaying games is where it's at. Once that ending comes, just means you sooner have to part with your love. And I want to go all night long.
Hahah here we go!atheistgod1999 wrote:I'm sorry, but what Blinge is describing is similar to steroid usage, IMO.
