Some of the best shmups don't actually end in a vowel.
No, this game is not Space Invaders.

Is it new content or is it just the website articles in book form? I know some of the shmup articles have incorrect information
Re: HG101 Presents: The Guide to Shoot-Em-Ups Vol 1
I have quite a lot of their books.
The text is mostly the same as on the website (= same quality), as are the pictures.
But the readability in book form is superb. The quality of the book itself is also quite good, you can see it has been made with love 'n passion.
For sure I will purchase this one too.

You can make out some of the text in the preview pics. For MUSHA at least it looks like new content, the Compile Shooters article they have has pitifully short descriptions of the games.

Likely full of the gross misunderstandings and inaccuracies we come to expect from HG101 anyways.

In large part because they ditch the "white text on black background" design of the website, which tends to wear on the eyes after awhile.waiwainl wrote:But the readability in book form is superb.

My experience of the Castlevania book they did was that it was an enjoyable read that delivered some interesting factoids and connections that I hadn't known of before, but trap's assessment still stands. It's interesting kind of a fun thing if you're into the subject matter, but HG101 is not an authority.

Yeah they should really switch to white text on a dark blue background! :3

I've got several of their books.
I take the commentary with a grain of salt, but I love the screens, love reading in book form, and have learned of lots of new games. I also enjoy the tiny interesting details about various games and series. Looking forward to this one.

Making an action platformer with a transforming grappling hook: ChainStaff. Also made a shmup with multi-ships: Shoot 1UP DX, and more .

I have their 'konami Shmups' book.
I think to find a book about Shmups in English happens far too infrequently that we cannot really complain too much either way.

I'd love to see one compiled by knowledgeable shmups forum members though.

Check the articles on racketboy, it's the closest thing.

Honestly, for all you can say about HG101, the book does look kinda awesome.

Anyone bought it, who can give a lowdown on the quality of information given in it, compared to the usual HG101 standard on shmups?

Re: HG101 Presents: The Guide to Shoot-Em-Ups Vol 1
I picked this up. I've only read a few of the articles. They were all pretty general information about the games just stating what kind of weapons the game had and mentioning some of the bosses/levels. It was enough to make me check out an arcade/saturn shooter I hadn't played before. The color pages are nice, and I didn't have any complaints about the paper quality. Its not superb though. The pages are not super thin, but a few had that almost wet look from the ink. I wish it was cheaper, but it would probably be black and white at a lower price.

In HG101's defense, I wrote the Shikigami articles, and I consider myself the authority on Shikigami.
I don't believe this book includes those, though. They're considered later gen.

Yeah, the Deathsmiles and Espgaluda articles will need some fixes and updates from yours truly once he gets around to volume 2.
