Ok, I also see where you're coming from now. I haven't liked a lot of Konami's PS2 stuff (Gradius V, for one) either, but I do like Koei, and some of their PS2 CG concept work looks amazing.No_not_like_Quake wrote:I understand what you mean and agree except that a large ( more than the 5 or so percent of malfunctioning units which is common with the first shipments of new consoles AFAIK) number of early ps2 units, including my own, had malfunctioning lazers, which led to the whole disc read error ps2 mythos.

I just don't see why Konami clings to sony so much. It releases stuff on the other consoles but come on, that chick wrestling game coming to 360 hardly looks like high priority shit for them. Be daring! Don't just suck sony's teet and give the scraps to Nintendo and Microsoft, know what I mean?
Koei are cool, not doing much cept for Dynasty Warriors though lately if I'm correct.

It frustrates me. I for one would love a new Nobunaga's Ambition (or hell even Shigen the Ruler, remember that NES gem? I think that was Hot-B publishing it though). Romance of the Three Kingdoms VII through X are great on the PS2 but Kessen 3 and Dynasty Tactics Xtreme Warrior Samurai Empire Legends is getting way out of hand.
Back in the day even the same game coming out on different platforms would be a totally different experience. Konami clinging to the PS2 so much is a shame, there are a ton of games on the PS2 that would blatantly look (and more importantly RUN, good God I HATE inconsistent framerates, this is one of the main reasons I can't stand most PS2 games) better if it were not on the PS2.
I have to again salute SNK Neo Geo USA, the ballsiest publisher ever, for giving SCEA the finger and putting Metal Slug 3/etc. on the XBox in the US.

I've already concluded there is no room for PS3 in the marketplace. Consumers just don't need it and whatever market share there was is taken by 360. I think if you ask Microsoft right now they are not overly happy with the sales performance or interest in the system even if there are hardware shortages.
Think about it, by the time Sony launch, there will be tons of XB360's on shelves in the $250-$300 price range.. Whos gonna buy a $600 system that does the same?
Sony are promising too much, thats a fact. Sony will probably not even be able to achieve goals already achieved by XB360, thats another fact (online gaming is definately one).
I can tell you now, Nintendo will have the least powerful system but they will make the most profit.. Thats for damn sure.

This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

I don't know if shops outside the US do this, but at least when the last couple of consoles were released, the only way to get the box was to buy one of those damned package deals or wait overnight for a chance...can you imagine how much it will cost to get the PS3 at launch with this crazy practice?
I still remember feeling so sorry for a guy at the X360's launch when I stopped at a shop to pick up Ninja Gaiden Black, and saw him pulling out $500, on top of $200 which he said he paid initially. All this just to play an admittedly cool-looking cockpit view of Project Gotham 3 (sigh...)

I agree. Here's what I think happened:neorichieb1971 wrote:I've already concluded there is no room for PS3 in the marketplace. DVD comes out, Sony decides they need to prepare for the next format, they begin researching Blu-Ray.
Toshiba pops out, TA-DAAAA! HD-DVD!!!! Weeeeee!!!!
Sony: "Oh shit! They're going to have the next format. Is Blu-Ray ready?"
Techie: "Uh... no... the technology is still too expensive and the players are unreliable as hell."
Sony: "Fuck it, release it! We'll make a new system to get it into the market. HAHA!"
Techie: "But the players are still highly unreliable and expensive..."
Sony: "Who do you work for!? Nintendo!? Shut up and put this stuff out!"
Seriously, every in depth article I've read on Blu-Ray vs. HD-DVD has mentioned that makers cannot guarantee the players will work, and Blu-Ray is obscenely fragile.
Of course, history does repeat itself...
Gameboy vs. Game Gear
VHS vs. BetaMax
And given how World of Warcraft is supposedly obliterating Everquest... Sony is fighting a losing battle on every front. Such a beautiful time to be a Sony hater.

RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE!!!!!!
I wish you guys where right. But the market is pretty stupid and they just might buy the PS3 regardless of it's real technical power or the way too high price. Many people I hear talking about the new systems they that they are going to buy the PS3 because "It will be the system with the best graphics in the world." I think this may be a reason why the 360 is not selling so well, because many are still waiting for the PS3.
I'm really for Nintendo this time and I will probably buy the revo (even if I'm still not 100% convinced about the controller...) But at least I'll get something new offered and most games by Nintendo are quality.
Back when the PS2 was released I thought: How can the people look at the expensive PS2 and say "WOW!", when there where runnning Soul Calibur on DC everywhere in dept stores for a much more reasonable price? I got it: It was not called "PLAYSTATION 2", like people always buy all new EA Sports titles...

PS3 = $600
Games = $60+
Movies = $25 approx
1080p display = $8000 at the very least
Now if you did have a 1080p display, everything apart from BR movies and PS3 games would be scaled, making it look terrible or worse than on an inferior screen that ran in native 720p for example.
DVD playback is on the agenda I think, but last I heard Sony were having problems getting BR to playback DVD's. There is no protection standard in place for BR at this time meaning that if for example Sony release PS3 before the standard is met, its possible PS3 will not play BR movies at all.. or a patch can be installed.. Which needs a hard drive or suitable memory card... Its a mess Yeah!
HD-DVD would be easier to copy since it uses DVD9's.. But they cost about $12 each don't they? Which defeats the objective for 1-1 copies.
The only good thing for BR right now is that Sony have promised major titles in the BR range to include the DVD of the movie for free.. Anyone for Charlies Angels and Stealth? (2 of the initial releases!)

Sure there is room. PS2 is old. Tens of millions of owners are waiting to upgrade. They don't want a Suxbox360 as long as it seems that PS3 will be technically superior, will be able to play Blu-Ray movies, and when they know they'll be able to play their old fave PSX/PS2 games on the PS3. Money burns in the pockets, but they will wait.neorichieb1971 wrote: I've already concluded there is no room for PS3 in the marketplace. Maybe those articles weren't in depth enough. I saw nicely working Blu-Ray devices almost three years ago. Hard to imagine that Sony would't be able to make them stable and dvd-compliant in three years.jp wrote: Seriously, every in depth article I've read on Blu-Ray vs. HD-DVD has mentioned that makers cannot guarantee the players will work, and Blu-Ray is obscenely fragile.
Or maybe you're right and it indeed will be "obscenely fragile" and Sony will have to cancel the whole PS3.
Before Pope John Paul died he decreed that Aliens were also GOD's creatures and we should treat them with respect.

1. That $25 price? Yeah, thats wholesale. The actual cost in store is going to be $30 for an old movie and $35 for a new release. Probably more if they package it with the DVD.
2. While Sony does have their 1st party movie people and Disney exclusiveness, HD-DVD has New Line Cinema, Warner Bros., Dreamworks, and Universal Studios exclusiveness.
