PVM mishap

Post by eightbitminiboss »

So I got a PVM-14L5 off ebay a couple weeks ago and arrived yesterday. Unfortunately, FedEx FedEx'd it hard despite the seller packing it relatively well from what I could tell. So now there's a couple cracks on the side and inside lower right bezel and the tube itself is now presenting color issues.

The monitor's internal degaussing can't fix it. As a test, I held a magnet over the monitor, dead center and it seems to more or less "fix" the image but obviously not a permanent solution.

Right now I've been talking with the eBay seller I bought from and they're offering a partial refund or a return minus a 25%(!) restocking fee and maybe shipping (if I can't negotiate out of it).

So what can I do here if I end up keeping it? External degaussing? Convergence strips? I don't have to keep it as I ended up with another one this morning that happened to be local to me.

eBay's policies on returning damaged items is quite clear. Restocking fees are forbidden, and the seller must pay for the return shipping:

http://pages.ebay.ca/help/buy/return-item.html#refunds

So if you want to simply cut your losses, they must offer you a *full* refund, and they must pay the shipping if they want it back, and if they refuse, you can open a dispute with eBay. You can start that process here:

http://pages.ebay.ca/ebay-money-back-guarantee/

Note that this is different from returns where you simply don't *like* the item. In that case, they can charge a restocking fee. But if the item arrives damaged (and that damage was not listed in advance), then they cannot.

it was listed as "for parts" so that goes out the window for him

The photos also showed it displaying a menu without this problem, so even if they listed it as for parts, it is still not as described/depicted.

I've already closed that avenue. I don't want to deal with shipping it back.

It certainly is, items must arrive as described. Simply putting "for parts" on a product does not obviate the seller from the requirement that it arrives as described.

I'm going to eat the loss as a reminder that I shouldn't buy CRTs online against my better judgement. But if I can fix it, I will. The cracks in the bezel don't exactly bother me and one of the front panel buttons despite being smashed in prior to shipping, still works. d0s already forwarded the issue to shmups' IRC channel and the theory is the yoke or purity rings shifted.

I bought online my BVM 32" and they shipped it to me from Saitama to Ibaraki. Two men delivered it upstairs, since it weights around 100kgs. Did not have any problem.

I'm assuming that's through Yamato Transport where they are revered for parcel care which is a far cry from FedEx's contracted drivers.

well, Ups broke one of mine. they arent any better.

ive learned you have to ship these on a pallet by freight or dont ship them at all.

btw, WHY is freight so expensive now?

I shipped a set of Truck Rims on a pallet by fedex freight about 6 years ago and it didnt cost half what it does now.

At first they were blaming gas prices. now that gas is cheap, what is their excuse?

As a Japan resident who is now buying his second CRT online, I can attest to how friggin awesome Yamato is, and most couriers here in general.
I had a 27" Wega shipped a little while ago through Yamato, through just their normal service, ie., not the big household goods service, and it arrived fine and the dude got it into my apartment just fine.
I've got a PVM 1454Q coming now too through a service called BOON and hoping it works out fine.

TL;DR Japan is awesome and Fedex sucks.
