I've been running my Genesis (Model 1) in RGB (JP-21) for the past few months without issue. I have the Retro Console Accessories Genesis 1 CSYNC JP-21 cable with stereo audio (headphone jack plug / 3.5mm) cable.

I decided to pull out my Model 2 Sega CD and connect it to the Genesis. It used to be easy, as a I had a S-Video / stereo (RCA) audio modded Genesis Model 1 and a S-Video / stereo (RCA) audio to HDMI converter. I ran S-video out of the Genesis / stereo audio out of the Sega CD into the HDMI converter, while also running a 3.5mm (mixer) cable from the Sega CD to the Genesis (using the headphone jack). I had audio / video with both systems.
I'm trying to use my current RGB cable for the video, while leaving the 3.5mm plug disconnected, and running a separate 3.5mm (mixer) cable between the Genesis and Sega CD. I get no audio to either system this way. Makes sense, as the audio (appears) to be running to the 3.5mm plug on the RGB cable.
Do I need to switch to this cable to resolve the audio issue?:

Re: Sega Genesis Model 1 + CD Model 2 + RGB
Keep using your mixing cable between the Genesis and CD unit, then get one of these and plug it into the back of the Sega CD. You can then plug this adapter into the 3.5mm plug on your SCART adapter cable. I have the same SCART cable, and a Gen Model 1 and CD model 2 and this is what I do.

It's kinda cumbersome to deal with the mixing cable, the RCA to 3.5mm adapter, and the SCART cable having both a DIN connector and a 3.5mm.....but it works. It also lets you put away your CD unit and use the genesis by itself if you want. I often put my CD in the closet and use my Genesis by itself since my entertainment center has a bazillion consoles on it and space is at a premium lol.
I've been debating modding my genesis and CD unit to have an internal connection for the audio so I don't need the mixing cable. I think I've read that the connector between the units has a few unused pins (the model 2 connects stereo audio internally right?), but it's been awhile since I've touched that subject so I could be remembering wrong.

Re: Sega Genesis Model 1 + CD Model 2 + RGB
Thanks Shoryukev. I'll try to pick up a 3.5mm female to RCA male adapter today. Much easier to add a $3 adapter than to buy a $20+ cable.
