Arcade abstract shmups pre Kenta Cho?

Post by Pixel_Outlaw »

I think Kenta Cho kind of put abstract shmups in the public eye.

But I was wondering if any shmup companies had a go with abstract filled polygons prior to his work in the arcade.

Maybe drawing polygons was computationally more expensive than simply blitting raster sprites at the time.
I suppose there was tempest, but I'm looking for more scrolling shmup type games.

Bonus points if ANYTHING exists with filled polygons which were additively blended like Cho does (glowing when they overlap). 8)
Some of the best shmups don't actually end in a vowel.
No, this game is not Space Invaders.

The only thing I can think of in the arcades is I,Robot (1983), which failed pretty badly, shelved other polygonal Atari games, and caused most companies to continue to support 2d primarily until the Namco System 21/ Sega Model 1 hardware.
