VP30 Issue

Post by Thamiel »

Hey guys, just picked up a VP30 for eventual use with an OSSC. Anyway, just powered it on and this is all I get.

https://youtu.be/IfFnN9niewA

Unit has an official DVDO PSU, PSU led is nice and bright. Front LCD Display lights up when first powered on, says something like "VP30 powered by ABT" with no error messaand all it shows on screen is that solid blue, pressing any of the buttons at this point powers off the unit. Have absolutely no idea how to troubleshoot this further.

Any of the buttons. On the remote? The unit itself?

Iirc that blue screen is the processors standard output when there's no input to output.

Try a hard reset (check the quick start guide here: here)

If you really can't do anything with the front buttons, maybe they're misplaced, it can happen if there's a shock during transport.
Unscrew the metal casing and the front panel, check that it's well positioned with the plastic buttons in line with the flat-flexible switches on the front panel circuit board, and rescrew everything.
Then retry a hard reset.

Unit didn't come with a remote unfortunately. Even if that blue screen is the standard output, pressing the menu button should bring up the OSD right? Currently pressing any button on the front while the screen is blue just powers off the unit completely.

Tried a hard reset from both the front buttons and the button on the pcb. Unless I'm doing it wrong that's not solving the issue.

Thanks for the replies guys, appreciate your time.

Did it come with the ABT102 deinterlacing upgrade card ?
If yes then check that it's properly inseted in the expansion slot. A loose one can make the VP malfunction.

Just sorted it, Xyga you're a legend! Power button had slipped in transit and was being permanently pressed down. Everything is working fantastically now, cheers lads.

Hi all,

I posted this over at AVSForum but perhaps I'll get some more looks here.

I bought a used VP30 recently and tried to update the firmware from v1.06 to v1.14 via a straight serial cable but something went wrong. Keep in mind I do not have a remote control. I set everything up correctly in Tera Term Pro and on the VP30 and sent the firmware file over to the VP30 and all was working fine until a few minutes later an error appeared on the VP30 stating to press any button. Pressing any button rebooted the VP30 but now it goes straight to a message stating “Load .abt file now..”. I assume my firmware has been totally wiped but I cannot put new or a replacement firmware on the VP30 because Tera Term Pro no longer wants to connect to the machine. Going through the connection steps again I can no longer get to the ABT Bootloader screen as seen on Page 7:
http://www.retrorgb.com/files/DVDO/Upda ... ftware.pdf

Unplugging the power adapter from the VP30 as well as hard rebooting the machine still leads back to “Load .abt file now..”. Any advice or assistance would be appreciated. I'm sorta at my wit's end, heh. Thanks!

EDIT
Some additional info/theories:

-It's possible that Tera Term Pro somehow switched languages from English to Japanese on me. I'm mentioning this because it was English the first time I attempted the firmware update but subsequent times the ABT Bootloader screen has shown gobbledygook since the laptop with a serial port I'm borrowing is running TinyXP without any language packs. If I knew how to change or make sure the language is in English in Tera Term Pro I could give it a shot and rule this out as the problem.

-I know I set the Baud Rate to 57600 for Tera Term Pro but now I'm wondering if I did the same for the VP30. I honestly do not remember if I did or not but now, obviously, I can no longer do so with my situation. Is there a default Baud Rate the VP30 would have been set to in v1.06?

-I'm pretty sure my serial cable is fine but just in case I did order this one from Amazon for a couple bucks just to be sure:

You did the hard reset procedure manually using the front buttons ? (not the remote)
Remember to hold the menu+exit buttons a few seconds after pluging the power back in, don't release them immediately.

Also which OS is your PC ? It's supposed to be done under XP SP2 at least. Not sure if it can be done with newer Windows (Vista to 10)
EDIT: sorry just saw you're on TinyXP. Dunno if it's as reliable as a regular build because you know, craptons of things have been removed to make it this small...

Personaly I've used an USB>Serial adapter, the DIGITUS DA-70156, and Windows XP SP3 (32bit of course).

With a serial connection I would first suspect a wrong baud rate rather than some magic language switch.

If you managed to corrupt the main firmware and the bootloader is running in some kind of recovery mode, it might use different settings than the regular update process uses.

OK, I stole my father's Windows 7 64-bit Pro desktop that has a serial port and installed Tera Term Pro on it. Everything went A-OK and I can confirm I had a language change originally on the TinyXP laptop. Here on the desktop the locale states "american" now instead of "japanese." Whatever, that should be an easy enough fix if I go back to the laptop.

I can now go through all the steps as normal and I can even see the ABT Bootloader screen but again I'm under the belief the Baud Rate is different between Tera Term Pro and the VP30. Trying to load the firmware results in an automatic error on the VP30 with the following shown on Tera Term Pro:

Please load the .abt file now...
Loading... Failure
Data file corrupt. Check File.
Press front panel button to restart.
System Reset... ok

ABT Bootloader

External SRAM... ok
SW Checksum... Failure
No valid firmware image found!

At this point the VP30 shows an error and press any button to restart. Closing Tera Term Pro and unplugging and re-plugging the VP30 allows the screen to once again state, "Load .abt file now..". Pressing and holding Menu and Exit will not get rid of that statement from the front of the VP30.

Again, I'm assuming my Baud Rate is different between the two. Since I have no firmware on the VP30 to change its Baud Rate, is there a particular Baud Rate I should set Tera Term Pro to in order to get v1.14 over to the machine? I downloaded v1.14 from here, by the way.

If you can read the bootloader's messages, the baud rate is correct. If it wasn't, you would get nothing or gibberish instead.
Data file corrupt. Check File.
Did you check the "binary" box in the dialog where you select which file to send?

Last night once everything was back in English again I thought I had changed the Baud Rate a few times to different values on Tera Term Pro hoping to find "the one" but each time the ABT Bootloader's messages were the same... at least I think they were. But now you've got me wondering whether or not I checked the Binary box, heh. I would think I did since I've been going from point-to-point on that pdf but as I sit here this morning at work I can't 100% verify that I did so I'll be tackling it yet again this evening.

Thanks to everyone for the help and suggestions so far.

EDIT
Made a nice little flowchart in Word and printed it off.
I'll be following the below 100% tonight.

-Set everything up between the computer and VP30

-Boot Tera Term Pro

-Select Terminal
->Change Transmit to CR+LF

-Select Serial Port
->Correct Baud Rate is 57600
->Change Flow Control to Hardware

-Select Send File
->Select Binary in the checkbox area
->Choose .abt firmware

EDIT 2
According to the below post #3 the Factory Default Baud Rate of the VP30 is 19200:
http://www.charmedquark.com/vb_forum/sh ... php?t=4047
Since I have no firmware in order to change the Baud Rate on the VP30 I'm wondering if I should set Tera Term Pro to 19200 instead?
EDIT - No, set to 57600

I forgot checking the binary box when updating my VP50. It's pretty easy to miss.

Got it working now :D

For anyone in the future with a similar issue to mine, here is what worked for me:

-Windows 7 64-bit Pro
-Serial port
-StarTech 2m Black Straight Through Serial Cable
-Tera Term Pro v4.92
-Baud Rate in Tera Term Pro set to 57600

Once again THANK YOU to everyone here for the help!
