Gyruss/tube shooter restriction gate?

Post by Pixel_Outlaw »

Anyone know what type of gate the joysticks on Gyruss had?
Just curious. I suppose they were still doing square in the 80's?

Wonder how it might play with a modified round gate...
It has such odd quadrant based movement.

We're still counting Gyruss as a shmup right? ... right?

No, this game is not Space Invaders.

Pretty sure it's just a 2-way stick.

<S.Yagawa> I like the challenge of "doing the impossible" with older hardware, and pushing it as far as it can go.

It's 8 way. Pressing upwards or downwards is required with moving towards the top or bottom of the screen. Looking it up, it seems to use something called a Monroe Joystick. Time Pilot also uses a Monroe Joystick.

Ah ok. That was the key to finding a youtube video.
That does look like a circular plate inside...
Very very different feel I'd imagine than my JLF square gate for MAME.

This is interesting. I only know one place that has a dedicated Gyruss cab, and yea the joystick definitely feels different than others I have used.
Typos caused by cat on keyboard.
