Qanba Carbon Arcade Stick

Hello,

I found Qanba Carbon Arcade Stick and folks from NEOGaf shmups thread recommended it as the best Arcade Stick for shumps for beginners. Here is the link:

What do you think about that? I'd like to purchase Arcade Stick for shmups as a gift on Christmas.

Is that just a reshell of the Qanba Q1? If so then yeah, it may be a good starting point if you're on a budget.

It's got a compact low-profile casing that I much prefer to the flashy big ass sticks that seem to be all the rage now, and should you dislike the qanba stick and/or buttons, it is easy enough to mod with sanwa parts (and seimitsu too I guess). That is, assuming it is a reshell of a Q1 (do your research about that).

You could also wait for a higher-quality stick to go on sale (some months ago amazon.com was selling the Razor Atrox for $99) or look for a used one on ebay or forums marketplaces.

I found used HORI Real Arcade Pro V Kai XBOX360/ONE/PC for 50. What do you think about it? Does it worth asking price?

If in good condition, that stick is easily worth more than 50 (in.. pretty much whatever currency).

That said, I have never tried the Hayabusa stick and Kuro buttons it comes equipped with. Some like it, some prefer more traditional arcade parts.

In general, most shmups players prefer sticks with a small dead zone (distance from neutral to engage), short throw (distance from engage to gate) and a stiff spring. These features are usually associated to Seimitsu sticks, so they tend to be the most popular around here. I am not quite sure how the Hayabusa fares in this regard.

That shouldn't necessarily dissuade you from the Pro V Kai though. At 50 it's a steal. Also I, for one, find little difference between Sanwa and Seimitsu, and prefer optical sticks (Sanwa Flash or clones) for pretty much everything, shmups included. I am far from a sticks connoisseur though.

Anyway, as I understood that can be a good base for start and then I can upgrade it with parts from different suppliers? If so it's a good deal for 50CAD?

It sure is.
I don't know if the stick and buttons can be easily swapped or require soldering though. As I said, I don't know much about the stick. You can probably find more info on the shoryuken forums. First thread I found:

I bought a Qanba carbon about a month back

Even stock, everything is surprisingly well put together, and things like the table clamps are quite nice and the whole thing is surprisingly sturdy feeling despite being mostly plastic.

I went ahead and swapped out the stick and buttons with Seimitsu parts, which was an easy drop in (an LS-32 you simply remove the mounting bracket from the stick and it screws directly into the mounting base). But like I said, even stock its still a pretty well made stick and doesn't seem as if it would wear out super fast like some other cheaper sticks/buttons would.

I haven't gotten the chance to try a Seimitsu stick yet, but i wouldn't count out the JLF. I have one of these https://www.focusattack.com/kowal-1mm-o ... -joystick/ in both my sticks and love it, reduces the dead zone dramatically.

Bargain.

Stick
Hayabusa stick very close to sanwa - very slightly smoother/dampened, perhaps not quite as solid feeling - but honestly perfectly good for play, executes fine. Unless you want a seimitsu I wouldn't bother modding.

Buttons
I like sanwa buttons - kurro aren't quite as good imho - but a lot of people, shmuppers especially, don't like the very sensitive sanwa buttons, so these maybe more desirable in your case than sanwas.

Too late for purchase advice, but I'd be surprised if you don't end up happy.
