Sony pvm-20l2 trinitron 600 + Extron RGB 203Rxi or 202 Rxi

Post by thefunk007 »

Hi Guys,

First post, so go easy...

I have read around the forum and online and have come to what I think are some conclusions but also have some questions as well and would very much appreciate those that have the experience and knowledge to just help me a little if possible.

I am currently in the process of obtaining a PC (Windows XP - should I run with Windows 7?) to run emulators and have already snagged a Radeon X600 so I can use CRT Emudriver.

I am also in the process of obtaining a Sony pvm-20l2 trinitron 600.

Additionally, I as I understand it I also need a Extron RGB 203i and 4 BNC cables as well as a standard VGA cable?

In the UK the 203Rxi seems much more expensive than the 202Rxi, can someone please tell me if I really need the 203Rxi or would the 202 be fine?

I also if possible don't want to use a separate monitor connected to the PC as essentially I would like the PVM screen as the single / main display - is not going to be used for anything else, is this possible? Or do I still require a monitor for setup purposes.

Once I am setup with all components,

I would need to connect:

1. VGA cable to rear on the graphics card with the other end going into the Extron device
2. The 4 x BNC cables to connect the monitor and to the rear of the Extron

Sorry for the long post and thanks for any help, I just don't want to mess anything up.

Kind Regards
Lea

You can get almost any RGB interface, since all you want to do is a proper RGBHV to RGBs sync conversion. Still, please don't get a 202. That's a very old model which doesn't even have a standard HD15/VGA input yet (but a Barco-style DB9 input instead), so you would have to make your own custom-cabling.

Your PC will be booting in 31khz though and the BIOS won't run in 15khz either, but once setup you can run the PC with just the PVM.

Fudoh is right about the 9 pin "universal input" on older Extrons. It is a pain.

But, if you can put together a cable (it's not difficult) you can save yourself some money.

My old 118 still gets the job done and you can find them for $10 usd.

Perfect thanks very much, can now proceed with my grandmaster plan :D

There none of those in the UK at all, looks like I need to import :-(

I didn't notice the absence of the VGA - doh.

Thanks

There's an ebay Seller in the Netherlands (axelmagnetic) who always has a large stock of new and used 164xi units (these have an integrated 1:2 splitter). The used ones are 33 EUR including shipping. I got a bunch of them already. Probably easier for you than importing from the US.

Thanks for the reply, I just checked that username and got no hits? Will keep looking.

Finally, I have just read on retro RGB that the 201 Rxi is fine to use as well, what is the key difference between the two? I can get them in the UK no problem at all.

I opted for a 201 Rxi with the Universal input for my setup. Did I fuck up?

From what i read from RGB cable they suggest either the 201 or 203.

So I think it's fine.

The 201 offers a vertical shift over the 164. Otherwise they're identical. The 203 has a 3-port input switch.

Great thanks Fudoh - I still need 4 x BNC cables to connect it all up?

Thanks, the model numbers are all over the place on these devices. It was doubly confusing when there's a version of the 201 with "computer" input but that's also that DB9 input that threw me off before I bid on one that had the HD15 input through pictures.
