I had that too. Man, me and my cousin were like 10 or 11 when we watched it, and we had to do it while no one was around, because of the blood and the sex scene.FinalBaton wrote:I have dis also : )BIL wrote:the good ol' Manga Entertainment VHS. ;3

Just read through Dorohedoro
I always enjoy a new chapter being released on the day when I catch up (and a distinct visual style) (and a cast of character where nearly everyone is likeable in some way) (and a mystery with clear foreshadowing and hints from the very beginning finally coming together at the end) (and tits). Loving it, even moreso when listening to the official OST at the same time

Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
Just finished the first episode of some anime called Nobunga the Fool. I discovered it when I was bored and searched "leonardo da vinci blue hair" in Google Images shortly after creating my avatar in GIMP to see if anyone else had done it. I decided to watch it because I usually just ponder stuff while listening to music anyway, and I'd rather do something. So far, I have no clue what's going on, but that's probably me due to me having a shitty attention span. I'm not sure whether it's good, though; could go either way.
One thing that's neat is that I can understand some of what the characters are actually saying, besides the subtitles. Looks like I haven't forgotten my Japanese lessons

Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
The anime and the manga are virtually identical, except for the Shin arc, where the anime people tried to stretch it way beyond what's in the comic but only ended up adding retarded crap (like Ken fighting a fucking tank. And then, a whole frikking ship!). After that, the anime mirrors the comic relatively closely, which means their attempt at expanding from the comic met with little success and were told to cut that crap out.FinalBaton wrote:that's good to know. I'll stick with the anime thenSkykid wrote:Yeah, 10/10 for insane Japanese concept, just not repeated with almost no creativity for 220 chapters.
That's exactly what it is about HNK too; we love it for what it is. But believe me when I say there's very littl beyond that aesthetic if you're planning to read the manga.
Personally, i think Skykid is an heretic and a philistine. HNK was made in an age where anime was still meant for children or young adults at best. When i was a kid they used to broadcast tons of Japanese animation here in Italy and they all followed the same format: simple self contained story telling where each episode was essentially like the next one with little variation. HNK was no different, except it was more violent than the rest, and to us kids it was the biggest thing ever. Stuff like Mazinger were great but HNK was something else entirely. Nothing compared to it (except perhaps for Future Boy Conan, and to a lesser extend, Lupin The Third). In retrospective all it was just a collection of action movie cliches rolled into a more or less coherent whole (sort of). Ken, who looked like Stallone, was basically Mad Max meet Bruce Lee meet The Man With No Name. Like many of those characters, he wasn't supposed to have a "personality". Kenshiro is an abstract entity, a force of good dispensing justice one head explosion at a time. Most of themes of the anime revolve around basic stuff like heroism, redemption and so forth. Indeed, the fights themselves were besides the point. It is the subtext behind them that makes them interesting, especially if you can put yourself in the shoes of a younger male audience.
It seems that by the third series Buronson started to get a bit self conscious about the simplicity of the format and tried to "elevate" the series by adding lot's of Shakespearean references and turning Ken into some sort of mentor figure but that didn't go anywhere and the whole idea was shit canned after a few volumes.
BTW, screw anyone who hates manly tears. Manly tears are great, and HNK had the best manly tears evar.

I actually don't really mind the repetitive nature of the story. That's because while the story's frame is a short repetitive loop (arrive in village, evil gang runs amok, ken defeat gang and it's leader), the story itself still constantly develops :Opus131 wrote:The anime and the manga are virtually identical, except for the Shin arc, where the anime people tried to stretch it way beyond what's in the comic but only ended up adding retarded crap (like Ken fighting a fucking tank. More background on the 4 brothers' training is constantly revealed, while the quest itself advances (ie : ken treks to meet the south star General, soldiers rush to Juza of the Wind, etc etc).
So it's not exactly 100% repetitive here.
Regarding your Ken has no personnality point ; you're mostly right but I think he actually has a smidgen of it. Granted he's not the most developped character out there, but his compassion, the fact that he is sensitive and very kind, the sorrow he feels(and that we witness big time), helps him being more interesting, and more than just a straight up killing machine/vigilante.
And I agree that manly tears are great

This show is seriously manly as fuck. That's the only way I can describe the tone of it. And when a character like Raoh has rivers of tears on his face
Spoiler
while finishing his brother Toki, whose he's not sad to kill; instead, what saddens Raoh so much is actually that Toki's fist is so weak (!). Now that's manly!
HNK is my fave anime to watch as of now. It's my go to and it's comfort food-level goodness to me.
Honestly it must have been mind blowing to see it back in the day.

I don't know. Word is that lot's of Anime are now "adult" oriented. I stopped reading them when i was in my late teens, so i only have a passing impression of what people are talking about.GaijinPunch wrote:Oh, you mean like the current generation?Opus131 wrote:

Only anime worth watching dubbed is Cowboy Bebop (JP VA is not as good), and The Big O (the JP VA is good too).atheistgod1999 wrote:Should I watch FMA:BH subbed or dubbed?

Guess it depends on your point of view. There is (and always has been) a handful of things that appeal to older audiences, but it is by and large still for adolescents at the oldest.Opus131 wrote: I don't know. Re: Recommended Anime/Manga?
The English dub for Space Dandy is horrible though.
Agree on Cowboy Bebop though. The original Japanese VA is just so flat. Literally the only example I can think of where the dub is superior, unless you're in the mood for the charmingly awful dubs of Manga UK.
Anyway I'm sort of watching Bakemonogatari at the moment. It's simultaneously absolutely perfect and absolutely abysmal. I literally have no idea if it's good or not.
Watched Shirobako a few weeks back, which scratched an itch to watch more workplace based anime (if anyone can recommend something similar I'll be all over it). The first half in particular was just awesome, genuinely compelling. Second half pushed the magical realist aspects to a distracting level but was still very welcome. Hope there's another series.

I also watched a couple episodes of bakemonotogari and while I enjoyed that experience... I haven't gone back to it to finish it. It seems that it didn't capture my imagination. But I have to say : while I'm not a tsundere fanatic (far from it in fact), I find Senjougahara Hitagi really fun to watch. I think it's because she's a graceful psycho. The torture she inflicts on Araragi Koyomi is calculated and straight up diabolical and I kinda get a kick out of it.
I quite like her hair design and she's drawn pretty damn well at times (althought not all of the time), and that helps. They're spamming her head tilt though, lol

The variation in animation quality is both frustrating and possibly one of the show's greatest quirks. Ultimately it's all quirk and no substance... but who needs substance anyway? Changing the OP theme after only two episodes, replete with eargrinding denpa is pretty ballsy. The budget is clearly haphazard but there's some interesting cinematography and mise-en-scène... but then in it's pastiche of gross anime paradigms it basically becomes a gross anime in itself. I guess we should be able to resist any demarcation between any percieved high and low culture iconography in the 21st century... but what if it's just shit?FinalBaton wrote:I also watched a couple episodes of bakemonotogari and while I enjoyed that experience... Tried to watch Kiznaiver. Gave up after two episodes. Had high hopes after Kill La Kill but this is as generic as it comes, and no online nerd rants ever persuaded me to keep going.

Yeaaaah, I watched Bakemonogatari with my mates a few months back and in the end I just came away with the feeling that "I can see how this is really appealing to someone who is not me".MX7 wrote:The variation in animation quality is both frustrating and possibly one of the show's greatest quirks. I can easily see why it became so popular, yet I was annoyed by it half of the time and wasn't sure what to make of things like, having the same CG car everywhere all the time. Was it a budget thing? Was it on purpose, is there a meaning behind it etc? Characters sometimes had really odd poses going on and just didn't feel natural. It was just like everything, including the occasionally amusing dialogue, had to be done in this complicated and roundabout way.
For the people who love to dig deep into their shows, taking them apart piece by piece, I'm sure this was a big hit.
Problem is, I am a simple guy and just wanted for it to calm down and stop playing around, like how text just flashed by way too fast to read it every episode. We ended up pausing and frame-by-framing those parts, which felt stupid. Also, I can't decide if it's a good looking show or not. They style is nice I guess, but the flat shading and typical SHAFT-ness of it all became a bit too much a few times. I am saying this a someone who REALLY likes Hidamari Sketch and what SHAFT did to it.
In the end, I guess I just classified it as well-made self-important modern otaku bait.
