Expert CRT repairs in the UK?
Does anyone know of someone in the UK who's really experienced with repairing CRTs?

Your local t.v. repair shop should be able to do the job.

Re: Expert CRT repairs in the UK?
I thought about that & did a bit of research - it does seem that there are companies out there who still repair CRTs but I just don't feel I can trust just anyone with a CRT that took 3 years to find. It's vanishingly unlikely that I'll ever find another like it, so it's priceless to me. I'd much rather a well respected enthusiast from the community did it as I know they'll treat it with care...

No idea. Might depend what you're talking about too - arcade or video editing equipment. I'd suggest somewhere where you'd be willing to transport yourself too in order to prevent that being an issue....does that rule in/out a location for yourself or happy to do this?
Plus what exactly appears to be an issue?... Some jobs likely to be a bit more generic than others.
Similarly you might end up resorting to simply an electronical engineer type who can I) figure out what's broken and/or ii) just well practiced at soldering.... Especially if it's a pvm or similar - not many techs about with experience on those specifically...

I believe http://www.omi-monitors.co.uk/ still service CRTs.

Most local tv guys will not touch CRT with a long stick these days. I have called tons around South Wales and the answer is always the same

How long until CRT repair becomes a lost art from the past?

I don't know - the arcade enthusiasts seem to be keeping things going. Spare parts will be a problem eventually though.

Nah. Has anyone ever noticed how many sellers are on ebay selling brand new arcade parts? a lot. when crt parts get scarce its likely some of them will start making some.

... I think you're wishful thinking. There's a handful across the world. As far as I know kortek are the only people who could maybe open a shop floor to make tubes, but I think even they have stopped, and are selling off the handful of old stock.mvsfan wrote:Nah. Beyond that, someone might start boutiquing tubes, but they'll be tied to their own chassis design and you'll probably be paying pinball prices ... and as a product it's much less of an excitable prospect for a potential entrepreneur than something like pinball.
And the odd electrician/engineer might be able to make you a transformer from scratch, but I don't really think you'll see proper production ever again - demand is just so low. No one is making a decently sized 4:3 screen of any type for example.

Semiconductor manufacturers have stopped making essential and exclusive CRT parts like vertical deflection circuits, horizontal output transistors, video output transistors etc. and will never make them again. Once the old stocks out there are gone they're gone for good.

Re: Expert CRT repairs in the UK?
When I was collecting CRTs, on the rare occasion I stumbled upon that still had a really mint image, I bought another of the same model (inevitably with a softer image) for parts. I'm hoping to have enough CRTs and parts to to eventually see me out!
