Re: Tectoy to produce Sega Genesis/Megadrive consoles
Regarding the consoles : it appears that it is not emulation, but rather computer components that are close to what's inside the original Sega GEN/MD consoles.
Interesting... we haven't seen that approach often from clone consoles.
But it needs to be said that as far as clone consoles go, Tectoy is as knowledgeable as it gets regarding the original hardware, since they got the GEN/MD licensing from Sega dating back to the '90s.
Cartridge slot works as it should, but there is also the addition of an SD card slot. Which accomodates a sd card pre-loaded with 22 games, that comes with the console (but you can bet your ass that it will be hacked sooner than later, hehe).
No HDMI here : only an AV port (which only does composite video, if I read right).

Re: Tectoy to produce licensed Sega Megadrive consoles
There's nothing particularly special about this, because Tectoy never really stopped making the Sega Genesis. There was a Sega Genesis 1/2 console released by Tectoy almost every single year between 1990 and 2005:
http://segaretro.org/Tec_Toy_Mega_Drive
They also released a Mega Drive handheld in 2007, and a no-slot "Mega Drive 4" in 2009.
Also, this thing is composite-only.

This will be pretty cool for folks who want a new Sega Genesis for their crt's. Looks like it lacks Sega CD compatibility from the pictures though. Wonder how friendly it will be to S-video or even rgb modding.

Another shitty clone. Who cares? (it's mentioned it's made using ICs immitating the original. In other words, it's a clone)
It's bad enough ATGame's clones are being peddled at places like Walgreens and Staples for 70+$

IMO this is of interest because :Guspaz wrote:There's nothing particularly special about this, because Tectoy never really stopped making the Sega Genesis. There was a Sega Genesis 1/2 console released by Tectoy almost every single year between 1990 and 2005:

1-While Tectoy made Genesis up until the mid 2000, they didn't make them since. Except for that weird one that came with a Guitar Hero style game.
2-This one's design, as opposed to the one they did in the 2000s, is very, very faithful to the original. And that is a very enticing aspect.
3-This console is NOT software emulation. This is very important. It might not use the exact same components, but it should have equivalent parts and function just as a real Genesis.
4-This console as an SD card slot.
When you put all those points together, than it is absolutely an interesting prospect.
I mean, we're getting a new run of Genesis(with the original design), how cool is that! Not saying I'll be buying one, but whenever an old console comes back I just find it friggin' cool.

Re: Tectoy to produce licensed Sega Megadrive consoles
but theres really no excuse in 2016 to only have composite outputs, especially at that price.
if theres anything (besides the price) that would make me not wanna buy it, A/V only would be it.

Composite out, $130.
No thanks. I'd rather buy a real Megadrive for less.

They also say it wont support the Sega CD or 32x and the sound implementation won't be 100% accurate. I'd stay away from this one. It really just seems like another bad clone.

I just find it fascinating that Brazil is making new Megadrives for the locals to play on their CRTs, in 2016.

Re: Tectoy to produce licensed Sega Megadrive consoles
But it's just a clone, similar to all the other clones out there. The only difference is that this one's got a somewhat more accurate clone chassis. How is that special? I could probably go online and buy a clone genesis today already.
Getting a license from Sega doesn't really mean much, they're willing to slap their names on anything for a buck these days. Still a poorly made clone.

Re: Tectoy to produce licensed Sega Megadrive consoles
Has a better chance to be an extremely well made clone, since Tectoy used to make legit Sega Megadrive consoles back then.
Plus having the blessing of Sega, and using a shell that's just like the real deal, makes it a way more interesting clone than all of the other clones that are out there.

Looks like a console-on-a-chip design. Probably will be similar to the AT Games one.

It might end up being sucky. Time will tell.
I just think that this is a cool bit of news. Shows that there's a TON of love for the Megadrive in Brazil still, and that alone is awesome.

Brazil never left the 16bit SEGA era.
If anything this company is just trying to cash in on the retro hype that the NES Mini spawned. As others have said, Composite in 2016 for $130 USD is not worth it at all.

Re: Tectoy to produce licensed Sega Megadrive consoles
$130 makes more sense when you realize that consoles cost a small fortune in Brazil if they're not manufactured locally. The PS4 launched in Brazil at a cost of $1,850 USD, with around $1,150 of that being tax. It took Sony a few years to try to fix that by manufacturing locally, and while I can't find a current cost for Brazil, the XB1 *was* manufactured locally, and still launched at over $1000 USD.

It's about time Brazil moved on from Master System and embraced the power of 16 BITS!

As some others have said, more than fascinating, it's really just incredibly sad. Their import tax is absolutely ridiculous and can't be anywhere near good for their citizens. 16-bit clones are all many can afford 20 years after the fact.FinalBaton wrote:Oh, for sure.Pasky wrote:I'd rather buy a real Megadrive for less.

Plenty of other Clones have Sega blessing. And are utter shit. Sega doesn't care about the quality of it's licensed products.FinalBaton wrote:Has a better chance to be an extremely well made clone, since Tectoy used to make legit Sega Megadrive consoles back then.

I was just thinking they went through the expense of getting an original size megadrive case molded again for this clone, Had a chance to do it right with at least S-video and they didnt.
i wonder if it has Svideo or rgb inside on the video encoder?

To try and step out of the alternate reality of skewed needs that these forums resides in. If you are doing a retro console reissue today, and you are not going with HDMI, then composite is absolutely how you best serve the maximum number of potential ordinary buyers.
The trend among TV manufacturers has been to drop all analogue inputs on newer models except composite.

Re: Tectoy to produce licensed Sega Megadrive consoles
Its not by choice. they are basically being forced to.
here in the us they already forced blu ray and dvd makers to start dropping component inputs in 2010.
Tv manufacturers dont have to, but with nothing new being sold to plug into those inputs, they are saying why bother with them.
Some manufacturers though like Sanyo are still including most analog inputs including vga, across their whole tv line though.
so thats a good thing to keep in mind when looking for a tv.
but when they sell these re issue consoles they should assume that retro gamers are going to want to buy them, thus include better inputs.

Re: Tectoy to produce licensed Sega Megadrive consoles
People have been saying TV manufacturers are not putting component inputs on TVs for ages, but I can't seem to find any evidence of that actually being true for anything but the noname brands. Samsung's current TVs still have them, LG's current TVs still have them, Vizio's current TVs still have them, Sony's TV still have them, Toshiba's TVs still have them...
Sometimes they're shared with composite, sometime they're via a dongle, and sometimes (in the case of Toshiba) they give it a stupid name like "Colorstream® HD" instead of component, but I went to the website of each manufacturer and clicked on the first 4K TV that I could find and they all had component inputs. The only place I could find TVs that didn't have component video inputs was BestBuy's house brand, Insignia.
From an enthusiast standpoint, though, the OSSC makes the lack of component inputs on TVs a moot point, it's composite and s-video that's more likely to be an issue. Extron does make transcoders for that (composite/s-video to RGB), and presumably they don't have any lag.
