I just got a PVM 14L5. It looks great, everything works, it's in great shape - except it seems to randomly shut down. It'll be fine for a while, but then it gets the jibblies and goes into a loop of starting up and going into full shutdown every few seconds. Doesn't seem to matter which input is used, or at what resolution, or anything like that.
Does any one have any ideas?
PVM random shutdown?

Intermittent HV Shutdown - Check your supply voltage while it's cycling. With the unit not powered and unplugged, visually inspect the fly-back.

Re: PVM random shutdown?
After playing with it a little more, it seems to happen almost entirely when it's in 480p mode. If I just use 240p sources, it looks great and has no problems.
After looking a little carefully at the 480p mode working (albeit briefly), I can see it actually has some pretty bad horizontal smearing (looks like a capacitance problem?) and the shutdowns happen in that mode almost entirely. I suspect the 240p/480i deflection and processing circuitry is fairly independent from the 480p and above processing, which would explain the differences in performance between both.
Flyback and friends look fine inside, but everything has a neat, even coat of dust. I'll de-dust it a bit, and consider re-capping much of this. It's clearly seen a lot of use, even though it's been well taken care of.
EDIT: despite what I just said, it's now doing it with a 240p source as well. When I crank up the contrast (gain) it seems to make it happen a little more often, but it's not consistent. I'm wondering if it's just the regular power supply having issues, as opposed to it being HV shutdown in particular.

I took a video of the problem happening: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5U0TfGVSVUI

Re: PVM random shutdown?
My PVM-20L4 does a similar thing, but it does a full (what I think is) a protective shutdown
I havent 100% nailed it down, but my theory is it does it when its asked to display a full bright white screen, so this happens
on a megadrive and Dreamcast during the Sega logo screens.
on a game like Revenge of Shinobi it doesnt do that screen, so the game works perfectly for hours!
