HD Box Pro - Color Problem (Purple Image)

Post by RetroGame❤ »

Hello. I have an original HD Box Pro that I dragged out of storage to play some 480p titles on my PS2, however, the image is very purple (or violet) which I believe implies an issue with the green color signal, but I'm trying to determine if the fault lies with the HDBox itself.

I've done the following troubleshooting:

1. Component Cables - (If any of the RCA connectors on the YPbPr cable were bad or if the cable were completely shot, that could account for the issue.) / I Confirmed that the component cable is good by hooking it up to a 13" Sony Trinitron TV which produced perfect YPbPr color. This also confirms that the PS2 itself does not have an issue with the YPbPr signal that it is outputting.

2. VGA cable - (If the green pin on the VGA cable going from the HDBox to the Monitor was bad or not properly connected, that could account for the issue.) / I confirmed that the VGA cable is good by running my Dreamcast through the VGA pass-through, which produced perfect RGB without the slightest purple tint whatsoever.

(I forgot to take a picture, but please take my word. The whites were perfect without the slightest purple tint. Typical Dreamcast VGA RGB.)

3. Monitor (22" Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 2070SB) - (If the picture tube, electron gun or VGA connector was going bad, that could account for the issue.) / I confirmed that the monitor is fine by switching the PS2 to RGB mode and connecting it to the monitor via Sony Waka Upscan Converter.

So I'm left wondering if there is anything I might have missed. Has anyone else experienced this problem with the HD Box Pro or any of it's clones? Is the color just really bad on the HD Box Pro? Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated. :) Thanks.

After much searching online, I think I've come to the conclusion (and I'm sorry if this has been covered before) that the Tvia TrueView 5725-AF (the chip used in the HDBP and clones) simply does a poor job converting from the YPbPr color space to RGB.

Here's an example of the evidence this conclusion is based on:

After searching Google for more captured footage of others using the HDBox Pro I can now see that most (if not all) of the results appear to be overly RED or PURPLE...

I have a LKV7600 (clone, I suspect) which is a later clone of the HD Box Pro (I think). It's got a very green cast, though I got used to it quickly. It never bothered me enough to try to null it out using the LCD's adjustments.

Ha! Would drive me nuts... however it actually does make that prinny look a bit more unified and kinda spooky in a good way...
