There was no good way out of it. Considering that Comey testified that the investigation was closed, it almost forces one to make a statement saying "well, there is some new evidence that we need to review" in order to be within the law. Of course, no amount of neutral-wording would have made the letter received with any less media meltdown.

Humor me: Keeping in mind none of these emails seem to be to or from Clinton, and there is no way will know their impact on anything until after the election, did it warrant the announcement (which could very well be him crying wolf)? I mean... it's an ongoing investigation. Trump's bullshit tax returns can't be shown until after his audit, right?

From my understanding, the investigation was testified as "closed" in September, based on all available evidence. However, there has apparently been found new evidence, which needs review, which is why he said that he is reopening the investigation. There are some conspiracy theories of agents threatening to leak documents if Comey didn't make a public statement, but as this article explains:

It should be axiomatic that if he must say something, then, he should say it carefully, and with due regard for the political realities. His investigations ought to be above politics; his words are political, regardless of whether he wants them to be.

-He did not sound very impartial about it... something federal employees are supposed to be doing doubley about now
-They didn't develop information about the case. They're investigating emails that might be at odds with his testimony.

He basically sounds like he's in deep shit... even people in his party are saying he mishandled it. To the layman, that hardly sounds like him fulfilling his duty.

Just a counter to your assertion that Comey had to reveal what he was doing to stay on the right side of the law: if the writer isn't making stuff up, chances are he violated existing law - as he was apparently warned he might - by doing what he did. The only thing he "had" to do, more than likely [Trigger Warning: Krugman], was make a vain attempt to appear "unbiased" by blatantly appealing to those who have most loudly accused him of bias.

I disagree with this analysis. I use the classical definition "liberal". Which both of our political parties fall under.

These are people who fight to give more of our money to the wealthy. They're machines that inflict pain unto others for profit. By definition, they can't feel human emotions. You can't do these things and have empathy at the same time.

"Victimhood" politics is also incorrect framing. They're liberals. They use identity politics. The conservative liberals use white protestant identity politics. The social liberals use christian identity politics.
