What [not shmup] game are you playing now?

Anything from run & guns to modern RPGs, what else do you play?

*scratches head*
aren't there infinite continues in the console ports?

I didn't have a hard time beating this one. Cleared it on the first attemp and used maybe like 7 credits. Now I get through with like 4 or 5. Will pop it in my Saturn tonight and check if I notice any combat strategies I might have been using.

Also, with the fighter, make sure you pick up a 2nd sword for quasi infinite windmill slashes :D The bear-owls drop some.

EDIT : I've been playing on default difficulty. Maybe the version you're playing has a harder default difficulty.

This is shmups forum mang. Obviously I'm going for the 1cc and restarting whenever a credit ends  The difficulty lists I mentioned are also talking about 1cc difficulty. Brawlers are really no different then shmups in that credit-feeding is a good cure for insomnia.

And yeah, I'm playing arcade version on defaults. I 1cc'd Alien Vs Predator without too much time, so this shouldn't be too difficult.

But 1 life bar is 1 credit in this game. So you want to clear the game with 1 life bar???

Can't imagine myself doing that... no way I could go through that game without ever dying

Yeah, pretty much.

Apparently it's easier than some of the brawlers I've already 1cc'd since with a good route and planning you can neutralize most of the harder stuff with items (I've seen exploits where people one shot bosses with burning oil and hammer spam). Or so I'm told. But dang if that entry barrier on the first few bosses isn't tough. Didn't have this much trouble making progress in AVP.

Holy!
Well, good luck :D

As I've said, the twin swords helps a TON with the fighter. Make sure to pick that up.

You can you spam attacks to the man scorpion when he is down and when he stands up, he barely fights back. Also approaching bosses from behind before they stand up is a good strategy for most of them, use slides for that. Also don't use the standard combo, especially not with cleric.

^^^Yeah, getting behind him seems to be the best bet. My current strat is to try to get down to 1 undead and then run away till an opening to go down on him presents itself. Still a lot of work, and one fuck up is really punishing.

What combo do you recommend for fighter vs bosses? Dash Atk > Down Forward Atk > OTG ?

Yeah the down+up attack is pretty good for the early bossses since you can loop it infinitely with the right timing, also using the resources efficiently helps a lot for the Harpy and Darl Elf fight. Most bosses after Lych are just a LBO fest.

Ah, for some reason I couldn't land down + up on Man Scorpion. He seems to get knocked down by the prior attack, or maybe the first hit of down + up (can't remember). I guess that's good though, since you want to then roll behind him and OTG a bunch, eh?

So like ideal strat vs Man Scorpion: run around and wait for a window or to get behind them, then dashing slash into down + up atk into otg?

Also yeah, I watched a replay where somebody took off half of Harpies life by just mashing hammers on her when she lands at the start. Even without that, I've almost got her a few times, so if I use that next attempt I think I won't have too much trouble with her.

You can't do the trick with all the bosses, not with Man Scorpion I think. The idea for Man scorpion is pressure him always keeping him on the ground, if you are near him just spam some normal attacks+special, if he is away knock him down with slashes.

It's certainly possible to one-credit through Mystara, but the game's designed to be played co-op. I don't think you're getting the full experience if you're grinding at it by yourself.

I've played it co op. It's alright.

I just really like the slide and combos. It's a super fun combat engine, and I really enjoy the boss fights. I think it's a great disservice to the game and the fun that can be had with it to say that co-op is the only way.

IMO, from what I've played and heard from people, it's not that the game is half-complete in single player, but rather it's one of the few arcade titles where single player and co op are equally important.

Mystara plays just fine on solo, actually the co-op is rebalanced to make it harder, for example on co-op you fight two Men scorpion instead of just one. Also the fun decreases drastically depending on the amount of magic-users playing :P

By the way, just played a credit and got my first clear as Fighter. Weird that I didn't do this before since he's my favorite character in Tower of Doom.

Capcom really stayed true to D&D. #CasterSuremacyMemes

Also holy shit Vuldi, the rush him down and slide while he's knocked down strategy really works. Just managed to beat him without wasting my Bottle of E for the first time on first attempt! Thanks for the strats!

The creators of the game say "Mystara was made with multiplayer in mind" and "We designed Mystara around multiplayer." The majority of arcade brawlers have been, going back to Double Dragon.

Keep in mind that I think, regardless of what a game's structured around, you're only playing it wrong if you're not having fun. It just didn't sound very fun spending ten hours getting destroyed by the second boss.

Playing Double Dragon on co-op just adds even more horrible slowdowns, so I wouldn't be so sure about it lol. I know it's a common conception that beat 'em ups are a multiplayer experience, but they are just as good solo imo, both single-player and co-op are quite polished in most of them.

Same. I think the price is pretty fair though, but I don't really want to waste my time with it if it's not a really good game. It sure LOOKS good, but does it have actually involving gameplay or is it just empty fluff like a lot of the indie metroidvanias we see these days? I don't feel like I can trust reviewers on this one.

I feel like we would hear many more complaints about it since it's been nearly 10 years in the making... and a 10/10 from destructoid + 9/10 from jimquisition which are usually controversial sources... but yeah, I don't really trust reviewers.

I might decide to bite before I leave work so I can preload it..

I played through both Maximo games over Halloween week. Ghosts to Glory is a pretty damn good take on 3D Ghosts 'n Goblins. Definitely better than MediEvil. Stages are creative and designed with an understanding of what makes for tense platforming. Enemy design is entertaining, though there could be a few more types... maybe something to fill the niche left by Red Arremer.

Checking my save after beating the final boss, I had 16 lives, 789 gold, and 21 death coins! This was with some reloading, however, and in retrospect I should have played strictly ironman-style.

Maximo vs. Army of Zin adds a heavy Devil May Cry influence, including a combo counter, buyable moves (with equivalents to High Time and Stinger), and a Devil Trigger-esque transformation. With this comes a larger focus on combat; some stages are just flat arenas with respawning enemies. I had fun, but the game felt less special, since this is a route the PS2 went down many times.

Now I kind of want a Maximo / Arthur / Firebrand team-up...

I think it's interesting how lots of skilled players have difficulty with DDSOM.

Maybe each one of us have some natural affinity for some games? I get trounced on DDTOD anytime I try to play it but I got really good at SOM to the point of 1ccing with Thief at max difficulty. It helps I love SOM and it's fluid combat engine to death and at some point in life I was addicted to it like crack.

But yeah the game is probably the easiest Capcom non-ftg arcade game to 1cc. Using the Mage to clear the game, you don't ever feel tense during the entire playthrough, feels almost like a console game...

AvsP is a game I never got the 1cc, and I tried it a bit, but not much. I see lots of people get the 1cc easily in this one, this is funny to me.

The thing with SoM is that execution-wise it's pretty easy (especially with the spell characters), but you definitely need some general knowledge of the game to clear it, like resource management, easy routes and boss strats, which is probably why some people that don't know these stuff find it difficult.

D&D1 was pretty tough at first for me, but now I can clear it probably more consistently than SoM lol, the key to that game is blocking a lot for the i-frames, it works a lot like King of Dragon, also attack enemies from up or down to be safe. Red Dragon is pretty tricky though, you definitely need some time to figure out the patterns compared to the wimpy dragons on SoM

Just picked up Shadow Warrior 2.

I'm playing it on Normal and actually finding it the most enjoyable Flying Wild Hog FPS I've ever played.

I love the superhuman movement abilities. I love that I don't have to scour every corner for secrets in order for my weapons to be worth a damn. I love that so far I haven't run into any boring warehouses, docks, or construction site levels. I love that despite the RPG elements, a headshot is still instantly fatal for the most part. I'm also glad they stuck with their trademark levels stuffed to the brim with explosive barrels of every sort.

I'm so-so on the upgrade system. Near as I can tell, you have 8 weapon slots and 4 elements you can socket into weapons and it's meant for you to have 1 ranged and 1 melee weapon for each element so you're prepared for elites. Hitting them with their weakness not only does more damage numbers, it also tends to knock them on their ass, which is always entertaining. I'm also not sure whether or not I like the disorienting camera movement of doing a combat roll after a long fall.

Kimiko is not the entertaining sidekick that Hoji was. Apparenly one of the designers agrees with me because most conversations with her are an opt-in affair.

So far so good!

played some owlboy last night with the cubs game in the background...

so far, the controls seem floaty, but that could be due to using a crappy laptop instead of my desktop
the pixel art and soundtrack is top notch
I've read a lot of reviews about the emotional rollercoaster of the game, and while the story (so far) is good, I'm apparently not as susceptible.
the one boss fight I did was a buttload of fun
the game really feels like a mix between a platformer and a light run 'n gun... or I guess I should say, fly 'n gun.

I've read that the game is only 10 hours and I think I've barely scratched the surface... so we'll see how it goes tonight.

Platinum'd Doom and Zero Time Dilemma.

Doom is really good. It might put too much emphasis on unlockables and character progression, but the mechanics are great and it has decent enemy variety. It probably has the best bosses there's ever been in an FPS too, but that really isn't an achievement. Better game than I thought it would be (definitely a step above the last Wolfenstein).

Zero Time Dilemma is trash. I really liked 999 and Virtue's Last Reward, so I was looking forward to this for years. Now I'd rather SHIFT back to the history where this game doesn't exist.

Now I've caught up on most of the 2016 releases I was interested in. I still want Forza Horizon 3, but I'll probably get that for Christmas or something. It's been a great year so far.
