Who the fuck thought removing the option to sort auctions with "most bids" first was a good idea      ? This person should be fired from Ebay :P . Why change something (for the worse) that was perfectly fine ?

GameFAQs's forums. Specifically:

1) Threads get locked way, way too quickly. Like, within a few weeks it seems if there's no response. For games where there's only a few people playing the game, this means that if someone asks a question, often to give an answer the responder has to create an entirely new topic. I know necrobumping is a pain in the ass, but there's a ton of games that only have a small playerbase where the occasional question gets posted and responses are often very far apart.

2) People who post on old or obscure game boards with "This board is mine!", "I claim this board!", etc. Depending on the game, you may actually have one or two legitimate threads buried by these.

I think that Skykid in particular would like to see this: http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nati ... /90772308/

Perfect summary of the present day. We watched the video in US History yesterday, and that time I actually didn't get in trouble for saying they were overreacting (teacher actually said I was right). Most kids in the class agreed that he should've gotten in trouble (including that "retro gamer kid", whom I actually stopped irrationally hating because I realized I jumped to all the wrong conclusions, but now I heard him say something retarded first-hand).

The funny thing is how most of the top comments in that link say he should be fired for either being unpatriotic, disrespecting veterans, and there's supposed to be limits on free speech in classroom ( when court cases have established precedent that they don't). The school board is completely in the wrong here, and I can't believe that someone could still get fired in this day and age for stepping on a piece of cloth.

I do agree with you there that legal repercussions for exercising your own freedom of speech is rather silly, though teaching kids freedom of speech by doing something as taboo as "desecrating" the Holy Flag of the USA could easily be misconstrued as 'say whatever the hell you want, being edgy is a god-given right'. It's important to teach that freedom of speech won't spare you from jail time if you start reciting Moonman raps out loud in public.

One of the classic examples is Turn-based Battle Systems, which is my preference, for many feels like a relic of the past that was only ever used due to design limitations
Because this is likely a defense mechanism, one that has no basis in reality. Real time combat in games predates turn-based computer RPGs. We have action-RPGs going back to the early 80s. A person can maybe make the argument that party-based real-time wasn't possible, but they would need to produce evidence.

It's a lie predicated on the defense of the new. It's a meme that started with one or two developers (like Jeff Vogel)and game "journalists" then trickled down to the audience, who love to parrot mindlessly anything that supports their position.

I mean, if a person can't see that without turn-based management (which is what it is, a system to manage a complex set of factors that would otherwise happen simultaneously) the AI would stomp a mudhole in the player's ass in games like like Wizardry, Temple of Elemental Evil, X-Com, Jagged Alliance 2, then there is not discussing game design with them.
Discuss.

Surprisingly enough, this thread - from Reddit, of all places - is among the few sites that appear able to view the issue of 'outdated' mechanics from more than one angle.

On a related note, are we ever not in a golden age of gaming?

So the Infinity Gems* from Marvel Super Heroes are actually the Crests from Demon's Blazon? That's Capcom for you, always recycling the hell out of everything...
Spoiler
I personally found the Infinity Gauntlet storyline rather underwhelming. The original Thanos War from the 70s and the later Korvac Saga were more interesting takes on what was essentially the same story.

It's pretty cringeworthy when people consider turn based combat a relic from the past. On the other hand, early systems were primitive, based on a lack of experience that we possess today, and often very limited in their ability to purvey the combat graphically.
There's no denying that ATB was a huge improvement over the classic method of choosing everyone's orders and then hope that things play out in the order you expected. It allowed for much more versatile characters, focusing on either speed or power, etc. Later additions from other game series would include aspects such as having to charge magic, or fast attacks that would let the player regain their stamina much quicker, etc. The system really came together with Final Fantasy X, where you immediately skip to the next player that requires an input, rather than having to watch meters refill all the time. It even has a nifty list of who's expected to get their turn next, similar to what Grandia did.

It's sort of sad to me, you may even say it's a little thing that annoys me, that this is also around the time where RPG developers pretty much decided to give up "turn based" combat, only picking it up once in a while as a sort of faux nostalgic gameplay element like you'd see in Etrian Odyssey or SMT4. While I love those games, I don't see any need for their combat systems to be so archaic and primitive, when a lot of things could have objectively been done better. No wonder people continue to see games with turn based combat as being stuck in the past.

I'm denying, actually.
Also, it is good that at least some titles still using the old turn based combat, and I honestly hope that SMT series go on this way forever. I just don't forget that were talking about games, where the aim dont need to the most realistic experience. For example, people still like playing even board games in videogames, right? I think I can even say that ATB is a "little thing that annoy me", although I would take time to put in words why I cant get no satisfaction from these games.

Of course, thats just my taste based on personal reasons.
I couldnt tell if youre saying that Etrian Odyssey or SMT4 should have been ATB, or that their turn based combat should have been improved.

I'm not saying they need to be "ATB", but similar to it there are many ways to do command based tactical RPG battles without imposing abstract limitations on the player.

I have no idea why you think my preference for ATB has anything to do with realism at all. I just think the idea of commanding four or more characters to do whatever all at once, while having to try to take into account which enemies will remain alive after this guy attacks, providing he gets to attack first, etc. just feels cumbersome and like an abstract limitation you're trying to overcome rather than actual gameplay.
ATB or similar systems where you're ably to order each character individually allow for much more actual strategy in the battles while also opening the games for many more nuances rather than just "use your most powerful attacks and remember to heal". So yeah, I really like both Etrian Odyssey and SMT, but their combat systems are seriously dumb. They are almost exclusively based on building your stats, preparing for the combat you're about to enter, and knowing what attacks to use and weaknesses to exploit, rather than the flow of the actual fight itself. Both of these games even have a "speed" stat, which obviously never really have that much of an effect when the game always resolves everyone's attack before moving on to the next round.

Just curious, have you ever played Pool of Radiance or its sequels? They handle strictly turn-based combat quite well.

EDIT: Yikes, typo.

Drive failure.
I had my external 1TB HDD die without warning as I was transferring some files two days ago. No sign of any issue beforehand, had the disk for like a year and a half? maybe two years?
I've had drive failures before, but they generally game me advance warning that "yeah, I need a new disk, this one's gonna die soon."

All subsequent attempts to access the disk failed completely ["drive could not start error" in device manager] or would lock up whenever I attempted to read any files if it did get to the point where it would mount.
Not too much of importance was there, a good 95% of what was on the drive was replacable or re-downloadable, and most of the rest was on my other machines anyway. Couldn't be arsed to make a real effort to try to recover anything because of that.

I kind of did want to get another drive before it failed in case something like this happened, but alas...
I do need to re-download all of my Steam games since my Steam folder was there.

The bit that actually annoyed me the most was the fact that the drive controller was USB on the board, so I couldn't even throw a plain laptop SATA drive in the case.
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.
