Re: Looking forward to "NX"?
I'm glad the rumors turned out to be mostly true, especially after the Wii U didn't turn out at all like its rumors. I'm definitely interested in this now. CARTRIDGE MASTER RACE!
It'd be weird if there wasn't touch support, considering Breath of the Wild being on there.
It's nice that you'll be able to use the regular controller while in "handheld" mode. What I'm curious about, though, is how multiplayer works in console mode. Will multiple screen parts be able to be synced to it, giving everyone their own screen, in addition to the big screen that the console is plugged in to? I mean, people were hoping for that with the Wii U's gamepad, but that didn't happen.
Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures 2 fucking when, and don't say "Triforce Heroes"!

Oh, are we hating on Mary Skelter for a tiny side feature now despite the game as a whole bringing some pretty good ideas to the table? I thought this place would have more class than that.
Also I shouldn't need to point out that games like Etrian Odyssey wouldn't work without a touchscreen. I would be pretty worried if greasy pedophiles were on my mind 24/7 and even that bottle on the table reminded me of them.

Re: Looking forward to "NX"?
A touch screen for a mainstream game console ? Why ? It'll carry games that don't need it.
Even if I've used the word 'tablet' to me it is still obviously a home/handheld hybrid console period (handheld coming second in the description since it isn't designed as such, 'portable' would be more correct).
There'll be several revisons of the hardware for sure, probably a more compact model, or with more battery, but a capacitive screen would be the gimmickiest thing.

10 inches does seem a bit steep. Might be time to invest in bigger pockets.
The ad is pretty goofy. The homies go go-karting and then play some Mario Kart at the karting rink. Then they play some b-ball on the court then slightly adjacent to the court with the NBA Jam.
It would have been perfect if the girl went gardening, and then played some Animal Crossing with her homies right after.
I'll help by paraphrasing the parable of Alice In Wonderland: Everyone's weeaboo. You're weeaboo. I'm weeaboo. If we weren't, we wouldn't be here.
I guess there's some satisfaction from dropping icons onto a map, but it'd be tedious if you have to hit a button to switch to the fullscreen map every twenty seconds. Like I said here earlier, I think going back to a single, better, screen is better.

I think you're dramatically misinterpreting the number of boners here for a horror-themed Wizardry clone where you run around a labyrinth with half-naked cartoon women.konmai wrote:Oh, are we hating on Mary Skelter

Re: Looking forward to "NX"?
The only reason not to include touchscreen functionality is to introduce it as "SWITCH: TOUCH" in a year's time, which considering the Wii U disenfranchised and all the skeptical whining doomsayers - which is most of you here - would be a colossal error.
The device has real potential. I'm rarely at a TV and the ability to carry my gaming with me wherever has a much larger appeal than an Xbox One or PS4 landlocked at home. But this thing needs more than toy functionality; it needs to cross the smartphone/tablet boundary and offer other functions that people need on the go - a proper interface for web browsing and media playback would make it incredibly appealing.

Frankly I don't understand you people, to me a genuine game console is free of all the pc/smartphone/media bloat and purely dedicated to its library of games.Skykid wrote:But this thing needs more than toy functionality; it needs to cross the smartphone/tablet boundary and offer other functions that people need on the go - a proper interface for web browsing and media playback would make it incredibly appealing.
Nintendo announce a new console ... the world complains it's not a tablet/smartphone. Wat.

If they make all that touch/apps/pc shit optional with a revised model in the future I don't mind of course, as long as the base system remains available, cheap, and fully supported by the company that is.
Anyway we're clearly seeing the problem with the Switch already; the first thought of maybe over half the people has been "Hey it looks like a tablet so I expect it to do the same things my android/iOS machine does".
Product itself confusing the consumers (or misunderstanding of consumer demands) = shitstorm.

Which is bad because the console seems interesting, I wish Nintendo would avoid the flak and be given a chance this time. It's up to them to present a great lineup.
Strikers1945guy wrote:"Do we....eat chicken balls?!"
Re: Looking forward to "NX"?
That's a problem with a very easy solution: make it able to do the same things Android/iOS tablets do. Or release it without functionality people clearly want, then proceed to wonder why you have another Wii U failure on your hands.Xyga wrote:Anyway we're clearly seeing the problem with the Switch already; the first thought of maybe over half the people has been "Hey it looks like a tablet so I expect it to do the same things my android/iOS machine does".
What does it detract from your gaming experience if other people can use the same device to post on Facebook?Xyga wrote:Frankly I don't understand you people, to me a genuine game console is free of all the pc/smartphone/media bloat and purely dedicated to its library of games.
Compared to what it adds in the form of more games available, because the device has a wider market?
Re: Looking forward to "NX"?
^ bloatshit pc/phone apps mean hard/soft requirements very possibly detrimental to the purely console performance and overall experience, like added lag, fragmentation/muddying, increased power consumption, and many more like just having your attention frequently drawn off gaming.
If those 'upgrades' haven't been anticipated by N then adapting the hardware will of course increase the manufacturing and selling prices.
I'll persist in seeing all those functions as useless or superfluous for a game console, and see the form factor/transportable side of the Switch as the cause for the negative comments, because the identity of that type of portable hardware, after all those years of android/ios slates boom, for most people is clearly that: a multimedia internet device.
Ffs the entire planet sucked Sony's dick because they're selling a product identified as a basic home console before everything.
In my eyes it's not wrong that the Switch has not been designed as a tablet, I expected a console and I'm seeing a console, Nintendo's mistake has been to make it look like a tablet.
I'm under the impression they've thought of the Japanese market consumer's perception first, where it's probably still more common/natural to see plenty of devices each specialized in its own field.

Xyga, at this point in time, do you really expect Nintendo, or everyone else, to release a console like that?

Re: Looking forward to "NX"?
That sounds like very very vague guesses with no concrete information to back it up. How is Facebook going to increase lag, power consumption and fragmentation (wtf) when it's not running?Xyga wrote:^ bloatshit pc/phone apps mean hard/soft requirements very possibly detrimental to the purely console performance and overall experience, like added lag, fragmentation/muddying, increased power consumption, and many more like just having your attention frequently drawn off gaming.
If I play Fire Emblem on my 3DS, does the fact that I have Steamworld Heist installed make it laggier and more power consuming? Why's Facebook different?
Re: Looking forward to "NX"?
Well, would they include only the bare home-cooked versions of the popular apps it might be okay, but to me it's obvious people expect the full mumbo-jumbo, which means capacitive screen and a compatible OS with it, probably unavoidable architecture and memory-design upgrades, back and front cameras+mic, bigger battery, etc etc.soprano1 wrote:I mean a pure gaming console, without social apps and the like.Xyga wrote:Sorry what do you mean by 'like that' ? We don't have the specs list yet, but it really doesn't seem like they have though of that, so either they release it as is (which old farts like me will be perfectly okay with), or they don't because they'll redesign it to satisfy demand, meaning a monstrously delayed release.
Apparently in both cases, they're screwed. Right now N's share is already down 6%, would they announce a redesign/delay the effect would be either the same or worse.
If they think it'll be the latter then they'll release it as is, this is what I think.
Strikers1945guy wrote:"Do we....eat chicken balls?!"
Re: Looking forward to "NX"?
I don't think anyone is asking for what you're saying, just basic tablet functionality. That doesn't necessitate a specific OS, memory redesigns, more cameras and bigger batteries. Just a touch screen and good developer relations. It's possible Nintendo are already doing that, but their refusal to comment is very concerning.

That's not it. The only thing these things share with Wizardry is the perspective. Do you call every FPS out there a Wolfenstein clone?BryanM wrote:snip
Automap defeats the point of the game, because the cartography is its reason for being. Yes, jotting down the straight corridor you just walked sucks, but there are many instances where you need to map ahead, map without making extraneous moves using visual information from the top screen (FOEs and random encounter control in general), and lay down notes.
And touchscreens aside, can I at least have the gyro? If I can't play the next Project Zero with proper camera controls on it, it's a throwaway console.
Re: Looking forward to "NX"?
I was going to lay down my "nothing is free" rant and say if an internet browser raises the price of this thing by $20, fuck supporting it.
But the Wii U had one, so it'd be absurd to think they'd peel features away. The NX will have a price of +$10, forever.
And there's not a damn thing wrong with that.

Re: Looking forward to "NX"?
Maybe that market has moved on??
I am not terribly sad, though I did like the Wiimote. My guess is that they felt that they wanted to solidify their move into "mobile" and "social" gaming with a tablet-esque screen and controller halves with a low number of buttons (more buttons = intimidating to most non-gamers).
The design of the console is actually better than I expected it to be; I am fairly optimistic, even if I can't see myself enjoying the itty-bitty controller half on its own (who knows?).
HOWEVER: it will all come down to the games. Good games, even if not graphically hard-core, trump bad games.

No backwards compatibility confirmed
I didn't really have high hopes for it, but they could've at least had some backwards compatibility for the Wii U considering how short-lived that console was

Yeah, but that's the hardest to do assuming they have different architectures. I'm expecting emulation for every cart-based Nintendo system. I actually love ReviewTechUSA. He's like the Rush Limbaugh of video games. Always looking for some little thing to get his panties in a twist and explode about.
Sometimes I wonder a bit on how much profit their emulation business really makes them. At the end of the day, it might be more profitable for them to just re-publish SMB1 and nothing else.
Remember when the gameboy color had SMB Deluxe? And it was beloved?
Sports games release a new edition every single year. They can probably get away with releasing a version of SMB1 with upgrades twice a decade. I would call it... "Super Mario Maker". Yeah. That sounds good.

Actually I'm totally with you on that. Personally I'm happy for it to just be a game console and be good at it. Unfortunately from the perspective of the unwashed masses, any screen resembling a phablet that doesn't incorporate at least half of everything an Android does is some kind of crime against humanity. My assertions were more about the chances of success of the console.xyga wrote:Frankly I don't understand you people, to me a genuine game console is free of all the pc/smartphone/media bloat and purely dedicated to its library of games.

Also there are tons of really awful and negative "imminent failure" comments in this thread from the usual suspects salivating over the idea of a bomb. It's clearly got more appeal than the Wii U had right out the gate and I see potential here I never even glimpsed with the former. As a videogame market predictor with an impeccable record, I'll hold my tongue until more details are out, but so far I think there's opportunity here for great success. Combining a steady domination of the handheld market with home console is a smart move.

I hope the Switch does well, but wouldn't be surprised if it tanked. Sure Nintendo has been doing very well with their handhelds in the past, but that market seems to be in decline too. The 3D gimmick of the 3DS probably got a lot of people buying the console out of curiosity early on. I'm looking forward to the numbers of the new pokemon gen compared to X/Y, those are probably going to be some kind of statement about the future of the market.
