Looking forward to "NX"? (aka The Switch Thread)
Re: Looking forward to "NX"?
Yeah, pages ago I was poo'ing the detachable joypad idea. There's no good utility in that, if you're a forever alone, just use a pro controller at home.
I guess in theory you could use it to try to pick up girls/guys while waiting in line at the DMV. Though... in a DMV line you'd have no surface to set it down on. And if you're in a bar, they'd be drunk and horny enough to be satisfied with your scientific "real life" godzilla theories (hollow shell, internal jet engines for mobility).

Bryan, that's a terrible snype.

There, much more class for a new page.

Re: Looking forward to "NX"?
This reminds me of those Transformer toys where you had to manually readjust everything in order to transform the figure. Where's the joy in that? Why not have it transform with one button?
I just want to hit a big red button as light erupts from my controller and yell PORUTABURU GEIMINGU MODO GOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Now I need to manually assemble everything like some shitty Power Rangers Zord.

It looks like something Alan Sugar would make. Ergh.
This isn't going to work.

Re: Looking forward to "NX"?
So basically a Nintendo branded Shield tablet with detachable controller and dock?
Re: Looking forward to "NX"?
Haha, "Switch". Their marketing guys really need to check urban dictionary next time. May as well make the logo a picture of Peach banging Mario with a strap-on.

Something I've not said about a games device since probably the GBA
"I actually want one".

I quite like it. With a screen that size I'm instantly dreaming of emulator/hack possibilities.

As long as it actually has games. If I have to play another Mario Kart, I'm gonna vomit.

This is my immediate reaction to seeing this machine.Mischief Maker wrote:Oh fuck! Where'd I leave the left half of my console?
Hell, considering the emphasis on using it for local multiplayer on the go, it's easy to imagine a buddy losing one of the controller halves or some shit like that.
and then Nintendo is gonna make you send the whole machine back to them and charge like $90 to get a new one

I'm intrigued about the whole thing, but I probably won't bother getting one.
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

It will bomb because it has no touchscreen. The millennials in the video will not be able to operate that thing.
Source: Trailer had zero touchscreen use and the long ass press release for the joy thing didn't mentioned it once. This thing is already deader than the WiiU.
Edit: oh, look:

lolWhen asked if the Nintendo Switch will have touchscreen support, Nintendo declined to comment.

Only creepy greasy pedophiles want touch screens.
That's like, science, man.
Logic would dictate that, because most people don't own HD TV's with touch sensors, you can't make a home console with touch controls. It's a physical impossibility.Source: Trailer had zero touchscreen use

Re: Looking forward to "NX"?
I'd hope tate mode was supported, even though I know it can't possibly be...

.... w, wait. You can just turn it on its side and use the controller from a distance. The built in kickstand doesn't support that angle but...

Well, for me it now looks like Nvidia Shield or that Ouya console.
Re: Looking forward to "NX"?
The Ouya was a phone locked into a prison. A nightmarish prison, like from one of those Cube movies. It was born from exploiting the soft dreams of gullible internet people.
Absolutely nothing is like the Ouya. Because each of those scams is it's own special snowflake. (Remember that portable that only existed as a money laundering front for a mafia?)

Re: Looking forward to "NX"?
Having no touch screen would be an enormous mistake IMO, this thing could take over the job of most tablets if it has a touch screen, a web browser, a media player and some basic streaming and social apps. Those are things most of the target markets of this thing would appreciate.
I was thinking of writing that even I don't believe Nintendo are stupid enough to not have a touch screen, then I thought over some of their recent actions and... yeah they're stupid enough.
Anyway, there's some details on the dock in that article. Seems there's no extra hardware in it, which is very disappointing, but at least that means it's not a streaming server (which I saw as a real possibility for the Switch).

Re: Looking forward to "NX"?
Why is destroying a screen with disgusting bacon fingers a necessity to have all and any of those things?
Re: Looking forward to "NX"?
Have you tried using the on screen keyboard on a console versus on a tablet screen? One is much much more usable, and it isn't the console. Have you tried navigating web pages on a console using buttons? It's not a pleasant experience. Sure streaming doesn't need a touch screen, but when you give up messaging and web browsing, you're going to need a second device anyway.BryanM wrote:Why is destroying a screen with disgusting bacon fingers a necessity to have all and any of those things?
Some app manufacturers would also have to redesign their UI for buttons and I think Nintendo wants to make porting things as simple as possible.
And Nintendo (and every other touch screen manufacturer) has had a solution for disgusting bacon fingers for ages: styluses.
Also obviously no touch screen means DS/3DS VC will be shit, but I'm assuming Nintendo not mentioning VC yet means it will be pretty shit anyway. That obviously only matters to a tiny minority of the potential market for this thing though.
Re: Looking forward to "NX"?
I'm sorry, but Android is crap. Android development is fragmentation hell. Android software consists of: crappy kangs of emulators and micropayment money pits. Touch screen gaming sucks.qmish wrote:Well, for me it now looks like Nvidia Shield or that Ouya console.
Retroarch is alright, but it's miles from its PC big brother.
If you just want to emulate old games, why not just build a Raspberry Pi rig with Linux?

Re: Looking forward to "NX"?
No, I just see that sort of extra functionality as something that could add mass appeal.
What I want from the NX that has yet to be mentioned is a quality screen, a proper online account system and 3DS backwards compatibility. Not expecting to see any of it though.

Re: Looking forward to "NX"?
I don't understand how it is in the horrible universe you've had to live in (I'm sorry no one should have to live there : ( ) but in my alternate reality people see eight or nine buttons on a joypad, note that would require at max two cycles to reach any letter in the english alphabet, meaning the WPM of such a setup would be at worst 1/3rd that of a full keyboard and 1/2 on average. Inadequate for the weirdos who write essays on internet forums, but more than sufficient to look up pornography on youtube.ZellSF wrote:Have you tried using the on screen keyboard on a console versus on a tablet screen?
They even have a "Typing of the Dead" style game for people to practice mastering this short form keyboard style.
My mouse has a button, so technically I only navigate using buttons.Have you tried navigating web pages on a console using buttons?
I really, really hope no one wants to use a Nintendo to access their bank accounts.
Re: Looking forward to "NX"?
You seriously think people are going to learn a new input method for one device? I've seen way too many people who haven't yet learned to use a common keyboard to ever believe that.BryanM wrote:I don't understand how it is in the horrible universe you've had to live in (I'm sorry no one should have to live there : ( ) but in my alternate reality people see eight or nine buttons on a joypad, note that would require at max two cycles to reach any letter in the english alphabet, meaning the WPM of such a setup would be at worst 1/3rd that of a full keyboard and 1/2 on average. I'm pretty sure you're navigating using the optical sensor under your mouse more than the buttons on it.BryanM wrote:My mouse has a button, so technically I only navigate using buttons.
Why? It'll be an entirely locked down device. It'll be more secure than your computer or phone.BryanM wrote:I really, really hope no one wants to use a Nintendo to access their bank accounts.

No, they're never going to learn anything. If they could, they wouldn't be people.ZellSF wrote:You seriously think people are going to learn
Hence why I said "alternate reality". A safe place where nobody worries about the 0.2% of the base who'd want to use this thing to replace their computer.

Re: Looking forward to "NX"?
As someone who wants Nintendo to succeed, I worry this is too hi-fi for the kiddies and too lo-fi for the adult entertainment center. For me personally it's a nice fit because I do 90% of my gaming or more on portable systems.
Re: Looking forward to "NX"?
Replace computers? No. Replace battery banks? Yes. Supplement phones, or in the case of kids replace phones? Yes.BryanM wrote:No, they're never going to learn anything. If they could, they wouldn't be people.ZellSF wrote:You seriously think people are going to learn

If you think only 0.2% would want more out of a device than playing Nintendo games, you're living in some weird alternate reality. The reality Nintendo lived in when they marketed the Wii U...
