Best DS model at this point?
Re: Best DS model at this point?
It's a bit funny, on the mobile system people want the pixels to be small and indistinguishable, but when playing classic consoles on a large flat screen they want them to be as sharp and distinguishable as possible. =)

It's almost like we're a group that cherishes big fat pixels or something. My favorite bit of irony is that someone is advocating a tinier screen on something that's already damn small whereas we usually chase the largest screens possible in everything.Unseen wrote:It's a bit funny, on the mobile system people want the pixels to be small and indistinguishable, but when playing classic consoles on a large flat screen they want them to be as sharp and distinguishable as possible. =)
Arguing PPI like this is some kind of smartphone forum...
Re: Best DS model at this point?
Higher DPI only makes sense when there's also more picture information that makes the picture sharper, while still maintaining a big screen size. Imo playing DS games is unsatisfying on a N3DS and barely acceptable on a (N)3DS XL. The 1:1 version just looks too small, which also makes the border between the screens bigger in relation. The standard blurry / pixelated mess is unplayable for me.
I still have a normal sized DSi for my DS games.

I feel the same way. Given how you're well within arm distance of the screen, I feel that the DSi XL is excessively pixelated.Guspaz wrote:Having a DSi XL and a 3DS XL, and having had a 3DS and DS Lite, I kind of feel the pixels on the DSi XL are too large... But that all the other options are too small.
There actually is a middle ground in terms of screen size between a DS Lite/DSi/3DS and the DSi XL. The New 3DS has larger screens than the standard 3DS, but is still smaller than the XL variants. It's not an exact middle ground, but it's perhaps the closest we'll get to one. It'd be nice to have something in between. Oh well.
The DS/DS Lite/DSi, 3DS and especially the New 3DS are not small. You want to know what is small? The GameBoy Micro, although that's a whole different ballgame.Einzelherz wrote:My favorite bit of irony is that someone is advocating a tinier screen on something that's already damn small whereas we usually chase the largest screens possible in everything.

Wouldn't the New 3DS suffer the same issue as the original 3DS, that 1:1 mode is really small, and full-screen mode is really blurry?
