Does anyone else avoid trailers of movies they really want to see?

Always.
Also, recently the trailers in general seems repetitive to the point of irritating me.

I mean, do you guys remember how the FIRST trailer of Mad Max: Fury Road did that with Cat Stevens' Wild World??? Before I suppose the marketing team was actually confident enough in the movie to use its chaotic orchestral score as the trailer music (thank God!).

The Secret Life of Pets
In New York, Max, a domestic dog, disappears after a disagreement with Duke, his new co-pet. Max's friends go looking for him.

As can be expected given IMG's precedents, a mixture of greatness and immaturity. But they are improving.

Great aspects include:

• A very coherent scenery and lighting style, realistic but carefully and beautifully exaggerated.
• Character designs, particularly Snowball the rabbit.
• A plot with three dead characters, one of which brutally killed on screen, and the others realistically worried for their life.
• Excellent action scenes, particularly vehicle accidents.

Disappointments come from the general structure of the plot.

• A very large cast of characters, which would be great for a TV series but wastes time with useless companions tagging along in a straightforward quest plot. Many of them don't do anything useful; some are an outright liability.
• Preference for quick jokes and action over more interesting reflections. All scenes involving relationships between pets and humans are deep, full of feeling or satire, and sadly out of place.
• Preference for laughs and fireworks over cohesive storytelling. For example, there's a long sequence in which Max and Duke visit a sausage factory: incredibly fun, but having them eat a good lunch doesn't really advance the plot. The same can be said for the hilarious citation of Super Mario Bros. which, despite being very faithful, very creative and very well shot, seriously disrupts the chase scene it appears in.
• A silly happy ending in which someone behaves too heroically.

I saw this in the theater and generally like it, but for me the ending felt really abrupt, almost as though they ran out of budget and had to cut a bunch of material. Even with a Minions short at the beginning the run time was still under 1 1/2 hours. As a pet owner, a lot of the animal behaviors in the film were recognizable as the types of things actual pets would do.

Q for you shmuppies; if you had to keep only THREE of Dario Argento's films, which would they be ?

(sub-question: would you leave Phenomena out definitely, even as a potential #4 ?)

Suspiria & Tenebrae for my top two without question.

Third place is a little more tricky, as there are so many to choose from... but perhaps actually it would be Phenomena for me. It's cheesy and bizarre for sure, but that's all part of the appeal.

(Close behind that would be Deep Red and The Bird With The Crystal Plumage. I like Inferno too, but I'd rank it a bit behind those.)

Island of Lost Souls (1932)
First adaptation of Island of Dr. Moreau. Never read the book, so can't compare them. Lugosi plays a small secondary role, but does a great job at it. Make up is pretty good, the man-beasts look really horrific.

I have this one in my library waiting for a watch, had forgotten what it was about. Most of my other "Island" horror flick stuff seems to be on the campy side, most likely.

Anybody watched with The Man With The Iron Fists? Tarantino (this is actually just my second Tarantino film ever, after Pulp Fiction, and I didn't realize that coming in), RZA, and so far some great scenery. Some of it is kind of obnoxious composited CGI, but I'm finding the gore effects hilarious so far (10 minutes in) and the plot seems serviceable, even though it's not aiming terribly high they at least have brought in the gang element. And who's this, Russel Crowe? Should be good times. An answer to Sukiyaki Western Django? I'll have to follow through with that one.

Another pick which looks interesting but may be too obscure: Millennium, a Swedish film production. Seems like it's got the production values although that semi-animated credits sequence was not very good. I'm hoping to find some English subs so I can understand more of what's going on. Not sure I'll stick with it; ran into it when doing some Millennium TV series research.

I saw that you're going for a Lynch sequence of movies and you're still going to see Wild at Heart and Lost Highway.
You'll probably notice that the movies have a lot in common. It is funny when you think that Jeffrey from Blue Velvet could be Dale Cooper from Twin Peaks the same way that Eraserhead's baby could be John Merrick.
Anyway, Wild at Heart is one of my favorites, go for it

Jack Reacher: **1/2

Fairly generic action flick in which Tom Cruise plays Tom Cruise (Jack Reacher seems like he might very well be an alias that Ethan Hunt uses on his day off) versus a collection of generic interchangeable movie baddies with an unsatisfying car chase in the middle that accomplishes nothing, and a whole bunch of cops not bothering to do their job and jumping to conclusions in about three seconds (well, some of them are crooked cops, but that's par for the course in these types of movies.) That's not to say it was terrible, but it does seem like the critics liked it more than I did.

watched the netflix original mascots last night which just released. girlfriend is a huge christopher guest fan and she's gotten me into his stuff in the past year or so with "best in show" being my favorite. mascots was a typical chris guest mockumentary about the national mascot competition. all the usual actors make an appearance with a few new ones, and although I "get" the humor in his movies, I only chuckled a couple times. not a big sarah baker fan but her chemistry with zach woods made her role a bit more enjoyable. and of course parker posey pretty much steals the screen though chris o'dowd as the fist was my favorite.

would've seen lala land at the chicago international film fest yesterday but tickets were $50/piece. both trailers I've seen look incredible and I'm even though I'm not into musicals. jim jarmusch's paterson tomorrow so I'll probably be reporting back

I just saw The Accountant. It's a very smart action thriller about an autistic man who's also an assassin that doubles as an accountant to criminals. It starts out slow paced at first, especially with the flashback scenes involving a younger Christian Wolff, but the action sequences and fight scenes are really good. Movie has a Jason Bourne/The Equalizer feel to it. The final scene reminded me of the ending of an episode of The Blacklist.

X-Men Apocalypse: **1/2

Even by the low standards of comic book source material, the plot for this was pretty thin, especially for a rather long (144 minute) run time. Basically, someone opens up a can of evil and Discount Picard and Store-Brand Gandalf (eventually) have to stop a Thanos impersonator from trying to take over the world. It seems like they basically drew straws to decide who got to be good guys and who got to be the bad guys in this one. The end result is an entirely predictable action flick that is rather short on action for much of its run time. Oh, and a note to the producers: Using large quantities of slow motion in your big action sequences doesn't make your bad CGI look any better. You already tried this in Days of Future Past and it didn't work there either.

That said, it wasn't a bad film, but once again it proves that Fox's superhero films are a step down from Marvel's in quality.

Couldn't disagree with that statement more really. Marvel's stuff is now stale to the point of mundane. Avengers 2 was garbage and so was Captain America 3, AKA Avengers 3. We're really at the high-gloss dross stage.

There was plenty wrong with Captain America Civil War, but the production values on the Marvel movies are far better than the ones on the Fox movies. Basically everything in this genre is stuffed to the gills with gratuitous CGI, but the Marvel movies at least make it look believable, where the Fox movies just look cartoonish (and not in a good way.) The CG in the Fox movies ranges from mediocre to terrible, to the point that you notice the bad effects more than the plot in a lot of places.

It seems to me there's a lot of superhero movies out there regardless of the studio making them where you could just fast forward though 75% of the movie and not miss anything of consequence (and for the DC Murderverse ones that number is probably closer to 90%.)
