Adjusting Vertical and Horizontal sizes question

Post by evil_ash_xero »

I have adjusted settings on all my Sony Trinitrons. But I haven't messed with the VSIZ and HSIZ. There is always a 3 digit difference between the two (I can't remember which one is larger, off hand).
It always seems like the picture is taller, than it is wide. Not much at all, mind you. Still, I was wondering what is the numerical difference between HSIZ and VSIZ that would give me a so-called "perfect" 4:3 pic?

There is no magic number that will give you a perfect 4:3 image as each tv is different but the width should be slightly wider than the height. Use the 240p Test suite Grid pattern and adjust it from there.

I'm guessing the 256 x 224 test pattern is what I should be looking at? (NTSC TV here)

You know I'm not exactly sure to be honest. I used all 3 grid patterns and made sure they all looked good. You can bring up a 480i Grid pattern by changing the video mode to 480i Mixed (1:1/NTSC). Keep in mind that TV's can't display the full 240p/480i lines so some of the edges will get cut off. The cutoff point is usually around 224p/464i.

One thing to note is that just because you can adjust the grid to fit most of the TV does not mean you should. TV's were meant to have overscan so squeezing the image to were you can see the edges of the pattern may be a bad thing. This causes the image to have a wavy scrolling effect especially around the edges. It all depends on how good the capacitors are still. The best way I can explain it is if you take a piece of a paper and slowly bring it together you will start to see it create a wavy effect.

Anyways, it's all about trial and error until you get it to where you are happy. Always be sure to keep track of your original settings while in the service menu. You don't want to permanently damage it.

BTW how bad is the geometry on your TV?

The geometry on every Trinitron I have is a bit off. But you learn to cope. Nothing too zany.
I've tried sorting it out in the service menu, a long while back, but it just makes things worse. So, I just went back to the original settings on that one.
