BVM-D20F1U - New 21D composite issues!

Post by DejahThoris »

Managed to pick up a D20F1U, and as customary with my buying any monitor at all, I have some weird issue.

Tried my Saturn, PCE, and Genesis 2, all to no avail. Using the proper RGB SCART cables, then a SCART -> BNC adapter with CSync, all cables from retrogamingcables.co.uk. I'd read a thread on here about setting VCR mode on or off, but that did nothing for me unfortunately.

I'm experiencing some really interesting colors. I tried swapping around R/G/B in case the cable was wired wrong (it isn't, but I got curious), but that leads to even stranger color combinations. So my PCE Duo looks like this on the run screen:

Any advice on fixing that? The menus in this are soooooooooooo deep.

Also, what's the deal with HD-SDI? To get the 360/PS3 up and running can I simply use an HDMI to HD-SDI adapter and be set?

2 hours I messed with it, finally make a post, then find the answer 5 minutes later on changing between YUV and RGB settings on a given channel...

Still unsure about SDI.

New question though. How do I set it to 240p instead of 480p?

you can, but 480p is an issue. Also the HD-SDI board got a fan, so I would exchange it for an analogue card instead.

no need. 240p is displayed as 240p, even if the display says 480i.

I have not one, or two, but THREE HD-SDI boards, haha. One installed, and got two spares along with the monitor. I have an analogue board installed as well, which is what I was using for the PC Engine etc.

Should I be using the HD-SDI for 720p games, and just use the analogue board for everything else, then?
no need. 240p is displayed as 240p, even if the display says 480i.
Glad to hear that. I thought I was going a little batty.

you can do that, yes. But still, the HD-SDI sell for good money and you can get a 20D or 21D instead giving you analogue RGsB and YUV for 480p, 720p and 1080i.

I will definitely look into that then. Will list the 41D's for sale here probably as well then.

Is there a preferred card between the 20D and 21D?

21D does composite video as well, the 20D doesn't.

I have one last question on the D20F1U for now. I've got everything working, ordered a 21D, etc. But where do I find a 4:3 mask for it? I see the instructions in the manual on how to swap the 16:9 out for 4:3, and I've searched "BVM Mask" to no avail. Is there a part number for the 4:3 mask? Are they an easy to come by item?

You may struggle to find one in the wild.
Mine came with one and that's all I use. If you can find a dead bvm20f somewhere you can transplant the entire front from that over

I was afraid I'd hear that. Wonder if there are other 20" models whose fronts can be stolen for this purpose.

Today my 21D came in, but I can't get it to take composite. I've messed with the settings a bunch but can't get my AV Famicom, or even my Genesis 2 (which works fine over RGB cables) to show up at all. Both systems work on another display with composite no problem.

I know that the RGB on the 21D works at least, as I've tested that out. Can't seem to get composite working though.

Do you have an NTSC decoder card in the BVM?

I'm going to guess no since I didn't know such a thing existed. I have a 41HD, 21D, the RGB card that's unlabeled.

What version of firmware is your BVM-D20F1U running? I know the BVM-20F1U has to be upgraded to version 1.40 to use the 21D board. I wonder if the BVM-D20F1U needs to running on a minimum version to support the 21D too?

I guess it does then. Thanks!

1.21 apparently. How does one update?

And the Component portion of the 21D is working currently.

For whatever it's worth, saw another guy using the Green input for Composite in an older thread (http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=49331). Tried that, got picture, but everything is grayscale. His BVM was on 1.30. Manual says serials over 2100001 need 1.40, and mine is 2010570 so I shouldn't need 1.40. Maybe I need 1.30+ then?

As far as I'm aware, v1.21 is the latest version for the BVM-D20F1U so I don't think you need to upgrade. v1.40 is the latest for the BVM-20F1U.

Have you tried removing the 21D board and re-seating it? Make sure you do this with the power turned off to the monitor.

I've reseated it twice, and tried a different slot. Double-checked the pins and such, everything looks fine. Always with the monitor off AND unplugged.

If you mean the particular channel's input (004,005,etc) then yes. I've tried NTSC 0, NTSC 7.5, PAL, and Auto. It gives me options for input number 4, 5, and 6 and I've tried all of them, both physically and in the menu. If you mean in some other menu then you may have to direct me.

If anyone else runs into this issue, putting terminators on the ouputs solves it. Not needed for RGB/Component, but composite needs them. I had ordered some and was waiting on them to come in. They showed up and it looks pretty damn good.
