It doesn't matter why the Mushi supershot fix happened (which we don't even know, we only guess) because the argument to add it back in was scoring parity/port accuracy, the same as with Deathsmiles slowdown, and the same as with telling people to leave SDOJ overflow enabled. You guys did this, you can't just cherrypick because it's not a holy arcade version.

Worrying about the raw number of players playing a particular game is completely ridiculous. They're all on a completely different continent and you don't really get to compete with them. If anything, all your competition will be on the ports, because you can actually play that version without leaving the country or spending $1000s as a retail price, and you can see the entire leaderboard directly and not that one single humongous score. Plus, we've only even had those single humongous scores recently, due to the kind work of NTSC-J and co. Oh, and those are almost all Japan numbers, good luck getting much of that out of China, Korea, et al.

I'm just not understanding why you're worrying about "competition" when you still need to actually find competition to play against.

the supershot doesn't affect scoring, only survival and noticeably only with W-power (and S-power is arguably better at beating the ultra TLB anyways, even without the supershot) and you could work around it with an external program anyways

it changed absolutely nothing aside from making one thing slightly less convenient, why even implement such things, their reason was something like "weird option behavior" which was completely normal when you mash the shot button while holding down autofire, making the options behave like in slow mode while moving fast
Blackbird wrote: I investigated the fix to disable the combination of "Rapid Shot" and "Full Auto Shot" (aka "Super Shot"). Super Shot was removed because pressing both buttons at once was causing incorrect movement of the player's options. However, after reconsidering the effect of removing Super Shot on high level play and score attack, we decided to revert the change because the option error was not severe.

lots of japanese players post their scores on twitter plus replays on nico/youtube from random players and streamers
just knowing how you measure up against other players is competition which is kinda hard to do if their scores in sdoj are in the trillions while yours are in tens of billions, you would know if you played the games instead of sperging about irrelevant stuff

Any plans to bring Muchi Muchi Pork and/or Pink Sweets to Steam/PC? I'm really enjoying the Degica releases on Steam.

This is one of the games I'd like to see ported next, alongside Futari and SDOJ, if CAVE decides to do any more.

Also I've never played DFK but I don't like the idea of always on autobombing

So, since I'm not a hardcore shmup player, I wrote a little bit about the experience of jumping in and playing shmups when it wasn't really my genre, as well as the conclusions I came to after the genre didn't match the expectations I had for it.

It is a short article, but I thought some people might enjoy it.

Good little blog you wrote, Nick. I feel I can relate to much of what you said, shmups, are, for me, a great way to spend short plays without having to invest huge amounts of time like many of today's games. Also, at my age, playing these games (retro!?) bring back many great memories.

I have a very, very busy schedule. We have a ton of stuff going on at work, and of course, I have my non-work life as well. We have last minute projects, rush jobs, and I pick up everything I can, as I really do love my job.

This means though, that even though RPGs are my actual favorite genre, I just don't have that time to invest very often anymore.

Shmups are a great pick up and play game, and that fits more into my life right now. The current one that I'm playing during breaks is Judgement Silversword. I've almost gotten 10mil, and that isn't a lot compared to top players and all, but, it just feels awesome.

Though, the current Judge I'm hitting a wall on is just frustrating me! I'll get him, though. I probably need to actually start using continues some, so I can see more of the pattern, try to get it down to get passed him.

The part about taking breaks to play those quick rounds wasn't just for effect. I really did blank on how I wanted to express things and drop off to play right at those moments.

So while shmups will probably never be my favorite genre, and I'll probably never be super into the scoring portion, they are a lot of fun, and I'm glad my job pushed me into exploring the genre, and I'll continue to do it on my own.

Damn...not even Steam sales have gotten the game price that low. Perhaps for the holiday sale?

Hi, Nick. Could you please say... Is there a chance to bringing this game to Steam? I guess it's on Judgement Silversword / Cardinal Sins engine, released only for WonderWitch. M-Kai's Self-Produce.

https://youtu.be/2QlLTj5iDrs
Yet another shooter from M-KAI, the developers of Judgement Silversword and Cardinal Sins. After two abortive attempts to develop the game under the title Project E-Force, the game wasn't finally finished until 2006, long after the WonderSwan had been abandoned as a commercial platform. As a result, the game is by far the most graphically complex of the series, with animated, scrolling backdrops and pseudo-sprite rotation for bosses. This game's approach is more around weapon power-ups ala the Raiden series than were the first two games, so it has quite a different feel. Clearly, though, if you've enjoyed their other games, a must-play.

Self-Produce is only one stage, and it's very clearly not even close to complete system-wise. Not worth porting.

Hi Nick, couple of questions if you get a moment.

Are any of the Cave releases on Steam likely to get SteamOS compatibility? I nearly bought a Steam Machine purely for shmups but all the games I want to play are Windows only.

And apologies if this has been asked before but is there any chance of the Cave titles you have brought to Steam coming to PS4 or XBO?

Many thanks.

A steam machine is just a desktop pc with a small form factor, nothing stopping you from dual booting windows for any titles that don't support linux.

When Mushihimesama had been out for a little while it was asked here if CAVE was happy with the numbers. At the time it had sold around 10.000 copies on Steam. Blackbird said that CAVE was satisfied with the sale.

I see Deathsmiles sit at around 12.000 copies sold at this point. Are CAVE still happy?

Considering that Mushi is now at around 30,000 sales, they are presumably pretty happy.

So, I recently bought Mushihimesama on Steam but compared to anything else you could buy for $20, this is total crap. I bought the game and the 1.5 dlc (can hardly tell what it even did to the game, except add another button for playing on hard). I played on easy, spent lke half an hour and finished it. Of course, it wasn't nearly as difficult as I expected, so I went straight to the hardest mode I could put the game on.

I also beat this in half an hour, and I suck at this kind of thing. sure, I had a shit score, but i didn't even die until the final boss. This is all because of your hitbox in this game; it's like 2/5 of a pixel large and impossible to hit. I literally just moved in circles forever and held down A. I would just glide right over those "bullets", putting them right on my hitbox in the process. I'm not even sure how it works, but sometimes it shows you a little circle that i think is supposed to be your hitbox. That is a total lie, I submerged that in bullets too without showing any sign of damage at all. In all, the only reason you'd die is if you killed yourself, and even that takes some time. I mean I geuss you could play it frame perfect and get 200 digit score or something like that, but there is absolutely no challenge to finishing the game, which hardly takes any skill or effort at all.

You probably didn't beat the game then, because if you use a continue at any point during the game you can't get to the real last boss.

Also upload your replay so we can see these mad skillz, pls. I'd love to see someone blind-clearing Mushi on hard.

By "hardest mode I could put the game on" you don't happen to be referring to the "difficulty" setting in the game options menu, do you?

When you first introduced yourself you said you were a fan of CAVE games, so I find it strange that you criticize the hitbox of all things. Miniscule hitboxes are standard fare for CAVE games and one of the primary traits that distinguished them from other shoot 'em ups, at least until everybody else started doing bullet hell too. Mushi's hitbox can be unusually small even for a CAVE game (IIRC this depends on the mode you play), but it's not as big of a difference as you make it sound.
