HELP my RGB monitor just died :(
Hello, today is a sad day! I have an Ikegami 20-20R broadcast monitor which I use for all my gaming, i have just been playing R-TYPE and all of sudden the screen cut off (like when you power it off) and all lights went out on the monitor. After cycling the power it won't turn back on, when I push the power button it lights up and tries to come on but then the light goes out and nothing happens.
I am absolutely gutted, can anyone offer me any help on the matter? Many thanks

How does it behave after its been off for a while? Sounds like a fusible link or something on the high voltage side.
How comfortable are you with a multi-meter?

Well it had been off for 24hr, I just turn it on and was playing barely a minute when it cut out.
I'm a total noob when it comes to any complex electronics, I don't ever own a multimeter.
When the power button is pressed the monitor clicks on like it's trying to fire up but then just cuts off, after that nothing happens again unless I remove the power cord and plug it back in then it just does the same thing again

Here's a pic of the power board, nothing looks obvious to me?

Its sounds as if something is heating up and cutting out. Could be a dry solder joint or a number of other things. Anything smell funny?

It's hard to tell from that picture, but are any of the tops of the capacitors bulging out? That could be a culprit, here's an example

Spoiler

Not sure about the caps, all look okay but I'm not an expert. After reassembling the monitor it fired up straight away and is back to life (for now!)
My heart sunk when it cut off earlier, any ideas? Couldn't live without the old girl!!

Most of the time when they go bad it's fairly obvious. You'd see it swelling out, and a lot of the time they leak and make a mess when they go bad.16bitpilot wrote:Not sure about the caps, all look okay but I'm not an expert. Good stuff, shouldn't be the caps then. Thanks, hoping it holds out alright, haven't got time to give it a full run tonight but I have a big Saturn session planned for tomorrow evening so it will get a good going over and hopefully hold on!

I own four Ikegamis and the caps will dry out on these, guaranteed. They are good quality Panasonic caps. They're not going to leak or bulge, but they are only rated at 85 degrees, which means they are way, way past their lifetime.

Okay thanks for the information, though I think I may be hard pressed to find someone who could replace the caps for me.

Re: HELP my RGB monitor just died :(
good to hear that it started working again, although you might have an intermittent problem, like a bad solder joint or a loose wire somewhere.
you will know if the problem returns.

Is there a whining sound when you "power" on the monitor?
Maybe it's the flyback that has died.

Re: HELP my RGB monitor just died :(
No whining, I played this morning for about an hour with no issues at all. Everything seems fine so may be a bad solder joint as suggested?
