I've been strictly pro-CRT for a number of years, but I feel like the shaders in Retroarch are 'good enough' when used with a low response/low lag variable sync monitor. I'm quite close to finally making the change as it were, but Dosbox and UAE (amiga emu) are big slices of my retro gaming pie.
Is Dosbox stable yet in Retroarch?
What about WinUAE or FS-UAE, do these support any decent shaders?
Thanks

Re: Going from CRT to shaders
I'm using Retroarch for most of the systems I like but DosBox gave me problems.
It's not good enough yet to use with every game (something like wolfenstein already has issues = desync and crash after a while).
There is this version of Dosbox with support for shaders that worked well for me:

I'm using an fx version of CRT-geom that works fine (can't remember if it's bundled with it? probably) and finished heretic, some doom, dark forces with it.
I'm not familiar with Amiga emus.

Are you running DOS games with 15khz shaders ? After all nobody of use experienced DOS (at least EGA and VGA) on 15khz monitors, but running in 400p70 instead.

I've used that version of Dosbox, but wasn't impressed with the shaders. Apparently sweetfx works with that version though so maybe I can inject Lottes CRT shader that way. I know it's a long shot, but can any of the Retroarch shaders be used with sweetfx?

That's what I'm hoping to do, but the shaders included with Dosbox SVN pale in comparison to Retroarch and the Dosbox module is in it's infancy.Fudoh wrote:Are you running DOS games with 15khz shaders ? I run all my 15khz content through my PVM at the moment, even dosbox.
Dos games ran at x400 because most monitors were 31khz, but they were x200 doubled, so they're actually perfect for running at 15khz and look amazing. I've been playing them this way since I first discovered how to connect a PC to a CRT TV

Yeah, but DOS ran at 70Hz in 400-line mode, and not 60Hz. Can a 15kHz monitor like a PVM handle 70Hz?Elbaid wrote:Fudoh wrote:Dos games ran at x400 because most monitors were 31khz, but they were x200 doubled, so they're actually perfect for running at 15khz and look amazing. Re: Going from CRT to shaders
A PVM can't, I just run them at 60hz, never had any issues. The scrolling isn't perfect, but it wouldn't be any better on most modern monitors. If I get a freesync, which I will if I'm happy with the shaders for all my emulated system, I can run at 70hz then.Guspaz wrote: Yeah, but DOS ran at 70Hz in 400-line mode, and not 60Hz. I think trisyncs like NEC XM29 or arcade monitors can run at 70hz if using a custom modeline.
Basically, I'm using a PVM now with DOSbox, WinUAE and GroovyMAME with good results. If I an get the sort of shaders Retroarch uses to work with Dox and Amiga emulators, then I can get rid of the PVM and use one display for everything

Re: Going from CRT to shaders
Someone volunteered to rewrite some parts of DosBox libretro.
Hope it will go well!
