11/17/2005 Perfect Zero-Damage Run of "Super Ghouls N Ghosts" (SNES)
Scott Kessler Crushes One of Gaming's Biggest Challenges in Just Over 45 Minutes
by Tom Votava
Capcom's "Ghosts N Goblins" series is widely known as one of the most difficult collections of video games ever created. Every episode has been filled with a wide variety of unforgiving challenges, most notably the untouchable "Red Devil" that flys around the screen at light speed, and having to finish the last level with a "special" weapon that just happens to be the weakest item in the game (something most gamers unfortunately discover the hard way, I might add). Simply finishing one of these games has been regarded as a great achievement, as few people have reached the ends of these games without continues or even cheat codes. NO ONE has ever done this in a single game before...until now!
Scott Kessler, from Monroe, North Carolina, has turned in the first ever complete game of Super Ghouls N Ghosts, for Super Nintendo. In so doing, he has set an innaugural fastest completion record of 45 Minutes, 41 Seconds (45:41). Even more impressive than the time (which is blazing fast, for as slow as the hero moves), is the fact that Scott managed to get through the entire game without ever taking a hit! He completed 7 grueling stages TWICE OVER (stupid princess), found the hidden Goddess' Bracelet during the second loop, and then somehow used its weak attack powers to defeat the final boss. All of this, with literally millions of places to screw up, yet he came through with a perfect game.
This is a truly remarkable accomplishment...one that I must say that I thought would never happen during my lifetime! I've never been happier to be proven wrong, or to have to cough up $100 for the bounty (assuming this time holds up until Dec. 31st, of course). Congratulations, Scott on a run for the ages!

Twin Galaxies tends to be very strict about the procedure needed to prove a record run (they generally require a videotape of the complete run) and also require records to be set on the original platform (records for classic arcade games have to be set on the original arcade machine, for example. I believe they do have a separate MAME category though.) If Twin Galaxies says it's a record, chances are they've done the homework on this. They are considered the authority on the subject, and would most likely reject an emulated score.

He did this a couple months ago. All his videos are fun to watch. He's an amazing player.

Thats what I want to know. Twin Galaxies has to have a video to validate the time and the run, someone out there in the vast reaches of the interweb has to have a copy of it.Dave_K. wrote:Of course someone has to ask...was this via emulator? And where is the capture/video?

Didn't Ben Shinobi also make short work of Super Ghouls N Ghosts? I had downloaded his Super GnG run but deleted it due to saving space on my PC.

I'm sure Ben used an emulator as well, but it has been done before, just not sure how fast Ben did his in. I also remember Ben getting his armor knocked off a few times, but always making it to the end of the level.

This is not always the case. I remember reading Twin Galaxies' forum quite a while ago and discovering that some record-submitting-players give them strict instructions on not to share the replay with anyone - apparently they're scared people will copy their techniques and tricks.Acid King wrote:Twin Galaxies has to have a video to validate the time and the run, someone out there in the vast reaches of the interweb has to have a copy of it.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

I have the game, but rarely play it, because I know it'll lead to the destruction of my controllers

Wowowowow
I'm always one for checking out amazing gameplay vids(and I love making not so amazing ones with my Genesis emulator).
The Super Monkey ball vids are AWESOME. Mucho respect to anyone that can master that game.

His video is just the second loop. Maybe he took a hit in the first round and cut the vid in half.Bloodreign wrote:Didn't Ben Shinobi also make short work of Super Ghouls N Ghosts? I had downloaded his Super GnG run but deleted it due to saving space on my PC.
