WAKA Up Scan Converter vs. HD Box Pro

Post by Dvnrm1 »

I'm getting much closer to figuring out which hardware I should be hunting down in order to bring my N64, Ps1, and Ps2 games back to life. I've all but given up on the OSSC since discovering that a 1080p display will stretch the image unless you fork over another substantial sum for another video processor, and I'm not willing to do that.

So I'm left with what I feel are my best options: an Ultra HDMI mod for my N64 and either a WAKA Converter or HD Box Pro for my Ps2. My only question is regarding which device will work the best for both 480i Ps2 games and 240p Ps1 games played on the Ps2. I have looked into both and feel that someone out there must know which provides a better quality and more stable picture. (EDIT: All of my consoles are NTSC, so PAL incompatibility isn't an issue.) The WAKA seems to be prone to displaying blurry columns and provides decent, but not excellent handling of 480i content. 240p content is where it excels the most. The HD Box Pro seems to excel at deinterlacing 480i content and yet, while I've read that its handling of 240p content is decent (IF you have an official model rather than a clone), it still might not be as good as the WAKA.

These are just my assumptions based on all of the exhausting research I've been doing. I know someone on these boards has a much clearer idea than I do, so I'm asking anyone who knows about both, who has tried both, or who has tested both for some insight. Thanks in advance. :D

My PS2 is still on my CRT. Is a consumer tv an option?

Not really. Space is an issue.

The additional video processor could still be an option.

If I understand Fudoh correctly, this ( http://www.ebay.com/itm/DVDO-iScan-HD-M ... SwzgRWzQah ) will pair up with the OSSC for ~$45 USD. Not bad.

that's only true if you a) can only use 480p from the OSSC (not 720p) and b) if your display doesn't offer any aspect ratio controls (which is rather rare).
unless you fork over another substantial sum for another video processor, and I'm not willing to do that.
as orange808 mentioned: an iScan HD would be fine and these are hardly expensive.
either a WAKA Converter
If you have aspect ratio problems with 480p from an OSSC, then the Waka would give you same results. Why would it be any different ?

I'm sorry, this whole thing has been an incredibly complex undertaking for me and I've been basically flying by the seat of my pants. Most of what I've learned is pretty cursory and most often I feel like I'm confronted with incomplete or contradictory information.

I do have aspect ratio controls on my current TV and have had them in the past as well. It's just that every time I've heard of the OSSC's resulting image being stretched by a 1080p display, that's when the author or speaker goes on to the DVDO Edge or VP50 as a means of correcting it, as if that's the only option. This makes it seem like if, for example, the TV's aspect ratio were set to 16:9 and the OSSC output a resolution that the display stretched when upscaled, and then the aspect ratio were changed to 4:3, the image would still be distorted even if it were truer to form. I just would have thought if it were as simple as "change the TV's aspect ratio to 4:3" I would have heard it by now. But it's really that simple?

The only reason I feel like I would need a chained video processor is if I couldn't get away from the aspect ratio issue, which is why I was looking at other options. But if everything priorly stated pans out, that might not be necessary. Though I'm definitely interested in something that can provide quality deinterlacing for my 480i Ps2 games, which is partly why the HD Box Pro was alluring. If the iScan HD could provide some substantial improvement with the OSSC I'd be all for it though.

I've only ever heard of this issue with the OSSC in all of my research, and considering I've never had issues with native 480i/p output being unavoidably stretched on an HDTV, I thought it must be some kind of unique quirk with the device.
