What's your favourite anime studio? and anime director?

Post by FinalBaton »

Thought I'd be fun to do a little poll on this. What is everyone's favourite anime studio?

Mine is an easy choice : it's AIC/Artmic 8)

To me, this studio's output is nothing short of godly. They put out many of my favourite animes, including :

Bubblegum Crisis
Vampire Princess Miyu
Megazone 23
Fight! Iczer One
Dangaioh
Gall Force
Call Me Tonight
Riding Bean

and many, many more fun stuff such as :

Black Magic-M66
Metal Skin Panic Madox-01
Sol Bianca
Burn Up
Detonator Orgun
Oh My Goddess!
Moldiver
Armitage III
etc, etc

What a beast of a catalog :D Seriously... this is like ridiculous for a fan of mid-80's to early 90's anime such as myself.

That all these come from one studio is... insane

Whatever the one Makato Shinkai works for.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

i actually didn't know him (I know, shame on me >_< ) and checked an overview vid of his work. Wow lots of very pretty art. I catched a couple episodes of Rose Of Versaille and I really like it :)

Will try to watch more of his stuff.

As far as favourite director goes : I haven't really thought this through yet, but off the top of my head, Yoshiaki Kawajiri definitely needs a mention.

Hell, the quartet of Demon City Shinjuku, Wicked city, Cyber City : Odeo 808 and Ninja Scroll alone warrants respect.

(Oh, and Vampire Hunter D : Bloodlust is pretty damn cool as well. Althought I prefere the first movie, Bloodlust is still great. It has a good story and looks gorgeous. I am really happy that he's the one who did the Vampire Hunter D sequel, that's agreat fit).

I am a sucker for late 80's/early 90's anime, so of course his stuff appeals to me. It always felt so "dangerous", "mature", "dark" and cool, yet elegant and super well drawn and directed. Seeing Ninja Scroll as a teenager is definitely an experience that was memorable for me, and influenced me for years to come.

Dezaki Osamu has way too many shows and movies, far exceeding what Otomo Katsuhiro, Oshii Mamoru, and Kawajiri Yoshiaki have done. His style is unique and identifiable, it looks good to boot, and the stories are compelling and memorable. I've not seen anyone nowadays who can fill those shoes.

RIP.

Is there some sort of site that lists and sorts anime by studio and director and the like? All the ones I've been to just list by genre.

Is your fave studio also TMS? Or is there another studio that makes you go : "wow, there's a lot of really cool movies/OVAs/TV series in that catalog"?

I think MAL is considered to be the best: https://myanimelist.net

My favorite would be Studio would be Madhouse. Kaiji, Akagi, Perfect Blue, Devil Hunter Yohko. Some of my favorite anime was made by them.

When I was a teenager, I liked that movie so much that I used to repeat some of the lines.
Something like "D, the hunter. I have business with Barbarois" or "ten million dollars is not enough."

Yeah, it's probably TMS and Studio Pierrot... I just tend to like anime from 1970 through around 1995, so that can be a lot of studios, just as long as the anime is good in terms of designs, voice acting, music, and has no cheap rotoscoping.

Sunrise Studios.

They adapted the Outlaw Star manga into my favourite anime ever.

This is all the evidence required in my opinion.

Took a more in-depth look at the list of Madhouse stuff, and it's very nice indeed. My boy Kawajiri's work is there, as well as Records of Lodoss Wars. Plus the stuff you mentionned already.
