dc in VGA = wow

Post by captain ahar »

i know that this is common knowledge around these parts, but last week i bought a vga box on impulse. it arrived the other day and i am sandblasted. played zero gunner 2, and realized that there are little "e's" on the small crystals as well. :shock: plus, JSR doesn't look like ass (as i was told).

and with under defeat and radilgy on the horizon (my horizon, that is. i can't order until next month :evil:) i am prepping myself for some hi-res fun in the near future.

also, this is my first time playing any game in this kind of resolution (though i have played shiki 2 in component) so the surprises i encounter are all the more surprising. :D

anyway, awesome little gadget and, as always, everyone else i mention it to is like, "yeah... what's a dreamcast?"

now the next thing is to dig through my boxes and see what else i want to test out (for curiosity's sake). off the top of my head, unreal tournement, shenmue, and cannon spike are on the chopping block. :)

[/common knowledge gushing]

Third strike looks good...

And also I dont think that Cannon Spike supports VGA, at least it doesnt say so on the game packaging.

CannonSpike/GunSpike is VGA compatible. There are a handful of games that are that don't state it on the box (Grandia 2 comes to mind).

Canon Spike supports all kinds of VGA (well, one kind actually :D)!
Games I've verified personally:

Canon Spike
GW2
MvsC2
Ikaruga
Crazy Taxi 2
Puyo Puyo Fever

Too bad GB2 doesn't work :(

Don't miss Tech Romancer. Looks like a nice PS1 game, but it's pure fun. Soul Reaver is also VGA compatible. And of course, Soul Calibur. Super Magnetic Neo looks nice too.

Also, the Bleem for Gran Turismo will amaze you. Don't miss it. (Yes, it works on VGA)
Don't hold grudges. GET EVEN.

As a general rule that I apply to DC VGA:

3D = good.

2D = bad.

And a shameless plug for the stuff I'm selling on eBay, if you're into that sort of thing.

Mars Matrix works. The game would look better in low res RGB though. Ditto for 3rd Strike, not like there's any reason to play that on DC.

I think all DC games 'work' through VGA, but like I say I only think the 3D ones look good as 2D is just too low-res (apart from Guilty Gear - backgrounds in Capcom Vs SNK, Marvel Vs Capcom, KOF '99 Dream Match and Evolution look good because they're in 3D, but the sprites look awful).

Not necessarily. Someone mentioned Gunbird 2 for example and I think that actually has issues running in VGA (I haven't tried it, but it's supposedly pretty choppy and unplayable overall). Bangai-o is also unplayable in VGA, even with exploits - only displays in a small corner of the screen.

Same w/ Twinkle Star Sprites.
It seems to me the true low res games do not work in VGA... at all. Or work really poorly w/ hacks.

Gunbird 2 will give you some sort of "this game does not support this display method" error if you try to run it on VGA. It is possible to force it to run by using a boot disc (DC-X will do this) but you'll get graphics glitches and slowdown. Bangai-O will be glitched to the point of being unplayable if you try to force it to play on VGA as well. Unfortunately in those cases that means I have to revert to composite video for those ones, but on the ones that do support VGA it looks incredible.

Welcome captain. You will never EVER want to go back to anything else, and you'll also wish that every console you own had native VGA output too...
