I saw Crank 2: High Voltage today. Dear God, that Godzilla-style scene was the funniest scene in the entire movie.

Re: Movies you've just watched
To my shame I haven't seen it (it's been on my "I should check this out" list for almost a decade). But man, I think I would watch it just for the nutty set design if nothing else (what spectacle!), coupled with some of the best actors in the business at the time. I admit I am not extremely consistent when it comes to my theatrical preferences (that's why they are just that - preferences). I recently saw a production of Twelfth Night (conveniently right in my neighborhood park, for free!) that used a sort of pseudo 20th-century pre-war Italy setting that worked remarkably well, with bicycles and mushroom-cap hats and guitars used to great comedic effect. Maybe it comes down to direction.Mischief Maker wrote: So what did you think of Julie Taymor's movie adaptation of Titus Andronicus?
I love it, but more for the performances than the nutty set design.
Like when I went to the theater a few years ago to see Taming of the Shrew, which was mostly nicely done and funny, but it was directed by Neil Labute - an otherwise successful playwright who has the infamy of writing the Wicker Man remake starring Nic Cage - who saw fit to include a modern-day lesbian subplot running along with the Shakespeare which had... less-than-desired results. The play-within-the-play scenario produced a few funny lines, but I just feel like combining some explosive lesbian melodrama just didn't jibe well with a comedy (that's been thoroughly dissected, excoriated, and analyzed from every feminist angle imaginable). Like, maybe it was supposed to make me feel uncomfortable about the misogyny within Shrew, but the base text does that plenty well enough.
I guess it's hard for me to explain just why exactly I don't like some things. It's not too rooted in principle; generally if it is distracting me that's when I don't like it (case in point: Romeo + Juliet, which I find obnoxious).
But back to Titus! The look reminds me almost of a Fellini film: grand, squalid, theatrical and disgusting. Case in point: Fellini Satyricon, which I can accurately describe as 2 hours of fat, hairy, sweaty Italian men fucking - fucking boys, fucking men, the rare woman, but mostly men. There are maybe three naked women in this gigantic orgy of a film: one of them is a hermaphrodite and another is a fat black woman who shakes all around the screen. I don't think I've seen a more indulgent and decadent film in my life (note: I have not seen Caligula)... the type that makes the bridge of your nose pinch upward in disgust.
I kind of think it's worth one view, if you are a Fellini fan, but he has made much, uh, more worthwhile movies (Amarcord and 8 1/2 being my favorites).

No Country For Old Men
better late.
It was good alright, but not the most Coen-esque of the Coen's productions IMHO, especially in the form/atmosphere.
Also I understand the originality, the topic, but the setting is too dejà vu (seriously all characters are alt version of Fargo's) and because of that it falls short of being one of their best.

Wanna hear something sad? I was the only one in my History (and, by extension, most of English) class last June who knew about the original Independence Day before the teacher told the rest when they were referring to the new one as "Independence Day".

Independence Day (the first one) is the rare film that I absolutely can't stand to watch. It's a film that feels about two hours too long at a run time of 145 minutes. I'll probably get dragged to see the second one once it hits Redbox, and I'm not looking forward to it.
The Angry Birds Movie: **
Surprisingly not completely horrible, but then again when you're trying to make a feature-length movie out of what little story you can get out of a time-waster mobile app "Not completely horrible" is pretty close to the ceiling for expectations. Probably not the type of thing you'd want to stake the entire post-Nokia economy of Finland on, but passable for an evening of mindless entertainment.

Independence Day is like a masterpiece compared to the sequel. It's THAT bad.

I love that one too. Like many people post here, they are different movies that excel on their respective genre (Alien on suspense horror, Aliens on action horror. Or something like that).Stevens wrote:Alien is one of the very few movies I would call perfect. Re: Movies you've just watched
Saw this new and exciting film called "The Cabin in the Woods".
The last 30/20 minutes of the film was fun and good. The rest, was mostly awful and boring. It would be a way better movie if they cut it down to 40 minutes.
You know what doesn't waste your time with bullshit you don't care about or like? Ash vs. Evil Dead. Season 2, starts next month. This is the type of thing you watch if you like things that appeal to the male demographic.
So they're renaming the Prometheus sequels and formally putting them into Alien canon.... but what the fuk are they doing with the Alien 3 reboot/redesign? What's the status on that? We still doing that? We gonna Newt it up, or what???

I'm really worried about all of it, because Prometheus was a massive disappointment (gorgeous visuals aside), and I am not so sure Blumpklumpf (sp) knows what he's doing given his post-D9 work. I as much as any Alien fan* want to see some Newt/Ridley/Hicks action, but I want things done right, and I preferably want Ridley to have an assistant by his side so he can stop directing shitty scripts like he's done since, like, Gladiator.
Despite really liking Evil Dead as a franchise, I never watched the TV series. Is season 1 good?
*excepting those hardcore hipster fans that argue that Alien3 was a good direction for the series. Look, I like the movie, love the soundtrack, and appreciate what it tried to do; the problem is that it did not do anything well, except for the music and set design/atmosphere. Which again, are amazing. I prefer Resurrection, which is a trashy, shitty trainwreck of a movie, because at least it is knowingly dumb and entertaining, versus a movie that is unknowingly dumb and melodramatic.

Blofeld has demonstrated he has a unique visual affect, a modern futurism that's decidedly bleak and sterile and slummy, which I like, and would be very interesting for the Alien franchise; but his filmmaking has suffered considerably since D9 for whatever reason.
If there's any hope, Chappie was marginally better than the hacked together, occasionally cringey-bad Elysium. TBH all hope in Blofeld had basically expired for me until I read an excerpt from an interview where he admitted Elysium was a poor movie and he'd totally fucked it up. Any director who can see and admit flaws in his work still has an ember of possibility for improvement, and that's the positivity I'm clinging onto for his Alien have-a-go.
That said, I'm keeping my expectation at rock bottom.

At least that's what acclaimed scriptwriter Damon Linderhoeffer said. Where is he lately anyway? I assumed he's being restrained underground and savagely beaten with rubber bats for his vacuous, flatulent scripts.
"Prometheus," more like Don't Go In The House VIII: Return of Squidbeast
After such a retarded movie I actually have marginal interest in new Alien thingy. Only marginal though, it'll probably be rubbish too.

Blazing Saddles.
Apparently Young Frankenstein was out, so we had to stick with this one instead.
This is one of those movies I've only seen parts of but never the whole thing. It was great watching the entire thing all the way through.
Especially the part at the end. If you've seen it before, you know exactly what I'm talking about.

Saddles was one of my father's favorites. I recall my cousin's girlfriend of the time referred to it in vague recollection as "that stupid cowboy movie". My opinion of this person clicked down from 1/5 to 0/5 at that moment. This was before we all were using the five point Icycalm scale of rating the value of human lives, among other things.
Prometheus does astonish me. The basic premise doesn't add any value to the movie whatsoever - who cares if human beings were made by chance/made by aliens/made by god/made by ghosts? It isn't necessary to kick off the plot. And isn't that kind of fact more relevant toward the climax of a movie than the beginning anyway? Like usual, the movie only raises the wrong kinds of questions.
Eh, at least it's not 100% boring. I just feel like they got way more mileage out of the haunted house in space+let's worry about the cat's virginity angle the first movie had. It wasn't just a bunch of random stuff that happens.
They need to add another cat imo. Aliens replaced the cat with a newt, but it's not quite the same.

I would love an art print of Ripley making her way to the lifeboat.
As far as Prometheus - it was the most disappointing movie in my entire life.
The one thing the Alien movies (particularly the 1st two) had going for them was characters who at least behaved believably. Prometheus threw that shit out the window and said disappointment was multiplied because I expected much better from Scott.

Re: Movies you've just watched
I don't know why people always praised D9 so much. It's a horrible movie which takes a bunch of easy shots at classic Fantastic Racism in a pretty unimaginative way. The plot could be fun, but seems like it's taken out of a typical Saturday morning cartoon, which makes it really hard to work with something that tries to be serious and keep a straight face all the way through.Skykid wrote: Blofeld has demonstrated he has a unique visual affect, a modern futurism that's decidedly bleak and sterile and slummy, which I like, and would be very interesting for the Alien franchise; but his filmmaking has suffered considerably since D9 for whatever reason.

I'm not gonna blame anyone for liking it, I'm sure it may have qualities that I just don't see, but the stuff people criticize Elysium and Chappie for, I'd say goes for D9 as well. I have 0% trust that this man can do anything good for the Alien franchise.
That said, Alien works as a great stand-alone movie, and Cameron's take on it was nice in its own way, but I don't really see any reason to make so much canon out of it. That stuff only happened because it made money.
As for Prometheus, I acknowledge that there's a ton of stuff wrong with that movie, but I still liked it. Maybe not having any kinds of hopes or expectations for it helped a bit. It did a few awesome things. Michael Fassbender's performance was amazing, one of the best android characters I've ever seen on film.

But it's weird to me that people are screening Blazing Saddles in tribute to Gene Wilder. That was Cleavon Little's movie, Wilder was just the sidekick. If you want the Mel Brooks movie that's all about showcasing Gene Wilder at the top of his game, you screen Young Frankenstein. How ironic for a movie with a black lead that's all about lampooning racism, people are remembering it for the white costar.
Fun fact: Sam Kinison cited (the shouty version of) Gene Wilder as a major influence on his standup.
