HD Retrovision Cables for SNES/Genesis on CRT?
Has anybody tried the HD Retrovision component cables on a CRT yet? I'm wondering how they look, specifically compared to a scart to component conversion on the same systems (what I'm currently using).

HD Retrovision converts the RGB to Component as well.MrOldSchoolCool wrote:Has anybody tried the HD Retrovision component cables on a CRT yet? I'm wondering how they look, specifically compared to a scart to component conversion on the same systems (what I'm currently using).

These cables are amazing. Component over s-video is a big jump on quality. I've used them both on a consumer CRT TV and a PVM. On a PVM the quality is exactly the same as RGB when the settings are tinkered with. A CRT TV with component inputs is not far off from a PVM in terms of quality.

Been meaning to get these as well. I'll wait until they re-stock as they are not worth $100-$150.

I've got a Kramer Scart to Component Converter and so I figure nothing will convert scart to component much better than that.

Yeah, if you have decent analog converter, you should stick with that. I have the AA 9A60, so I'm set.MrOldSchoolCool wrote:I've got a Kramer Scart to Component Converter and so I figure nothing will convert scart to component much better than that.

Is the spec sheet right as to what formats it can handle, or can it manage 240p?BazookaBen wrote:Yeah, if you have decent analog converter, you should stick with that. Yeah, it does 240p no problem. I just feed c-sync to both H and V sync on the input. I've yet to try it with c-video as sync, though, not sure how that would work out.Lord of Pirates wrote:Is the spec sheet right as to what formats it can handle, or can it manage 240p?BazookaBen wrote:Yeah, if you have decent analog converter, you should stick with that. Ah! I never managed to get mine to work on a consumer SD CRT, maybe I should've done just what you described above.BazookaBen wrote:Yeah, it does 240p no problem. I just feed c-sync to both H and V sync on the input. I've yet to try it with c-video as sync, though, not sure how that would work out.

Mine are great. I have both the SNES & Gen cables, with an extra SNES one I'm using on an RGB N64. I'm hoping to score one more on the next shipment & test it out on my RGB NES toploader, as I've heard this works as long as you make sure your mod includes the common Nintendo multi-out port.
I'm looking forward to their Dreamcast cable & Sega Saturn adapter. Hope they've made enough dough to put those into production.

If you have 2 already, you don't need to buy another to try it out on your nes.8BA wrote:Mine are great. I have both the SNES & Gen cables, with an extra SNES one I'm using on an RGB N64. I'm not swapping cables every time I play my NES when I could get a third & save the hassle + wear & tear. Also, the NES isn't with me yet, as it's still with the modding service.

Has anyone tried to use these on a PAL GameCube?

A caution, though. On my PAL cube, my two sample points:
RGB on PVM: Fine.
YPbPr on projector: Distortion in upper quarter of the image (skewed to the left).
I haven't tested the PAL cube on the PVM via the HDR cables, since I've not exhaustively tested every combination of console and cables. My NTSC SNES did not exhibit this issue. It isn't really a problem for me because the issue does not impact the GBI image, since the Game Boy image starts below where the distortion is.

Did everybody get theirs? The store still has a stock even 2.5 hours in this time. Must have been a much bigger shipment

Doesn't seem to be many Euro RGB elites getting these cables but I bought a pair of both last night.8BA wrote:Did everybody get theirs? The store still has a stock even 2.5 hours in this time. Must have been a much bigger shipment
In fact I am so excited to have a non SCART solution. I hate scart with a passion. I even used Svideo right through the retro years where available.
I chatted to Ste and Nick quite a few times moaning about their policy of not allowing pre-orders. I waited until UK morning last time and found out I had to wait 2 more months. Was not a happy bunny.

Curiosity, why do you hate SCART exactly?
Early shortage aside, Ste seems a genuinely great guy in my conversations.
Hope the cables work out great for you!

Re: HD Retrovision Cables for SNES/Genesis on CRT?
There are several reasons to dislike it. The connector is bulky and fragile, there are multiple standards, switches are expensive, and you need an adapter to use it if you don't have scart inputs (good luck with that) to name a few.bigbadboaz wrote:Curiosity, why do you hate SCART exactly?

RGB with the scart standard requires an awful lot of trial and error. The way UK TV's display scart can sometimes shift the image to the left, if the grounding is not good you can hear buzzing from the audio. If the screen goes white you hear interference through the audio. When the image goes to the left you need to become an expert on TV engineer menu's (how to access, and be very careful what you change).bigbadboaz wrote:Curiosity, why do you hate SCART exactly?

If you use something like an XRGB or Framemeister, you effectively have a bridge box which has 100+ settings and options. I find when you adopt this technology you find yourself constantly tinkering with settings rather than playing anything at all.
It all adds up to effectively trying to conquer the Holy grail of RGB. You will spend countless 100's of dollar/pounds trying to reach this goal.
The technology is now old and obsolete. Piling money into this technology is neither wise or justified.
The HDretrovision cables may not be the Holy Grail of RGB, but on a scale of 100, you will probably reach 85+ with a plug and play solution that costs peanuts compared to its competition.
If you want proof of what I'm saying, just look at the millions of posts on this forum, AVforums, Jamma forums. It goes on and on and on. And it will continue to go on and on and on whilst people are trying to find this supposed "Holy Grail" of RGB.
What we really need is a 480p display that treats 240p respectively. If I had the money I would invest in a technology which would dynamically change the resolution of a flat screen on the fly depending on its import source. The dot matrix of the screen would change depending on on the import source. That is roughly how a CRT operates and it should be the way digital screens work as well. Unfortunately nobody has bothered to investigate this technology in favour of forced resolutions and scaling algorithms.
