By this logic I should refer to the Contra games as Probotector and Gryzor. And Star Fox would be Lylat Wars. How would you like that?
Also, like half of all Castlevania games would simply be "Castlevania".

Also does ANYONE EVER call Super Aleste "Space Megaforce"? I forgot it even had that title. Aleste is a long running series, so there's every reason to acknowledge it as such.

Localization is interesting, but intentionally refering to games that have a western name with Japanese jargon is nothing more than pretentious babble.

Disambiguation and pretentious behavior are two different things.

Yeah it does, because it was released in Europe (i.e. the west) as Super Aleste.

It's not just North America and Japan you know.

For clarity, I'm referring to Americans that do it--and they are legion.

Rockman is another example. Nobody says Puckman, though... I guess that's not hipster "cool".

Probably shouldn't use "the West" as a synonym for North America then.

Even the Famicom cart says "PAC-MAN", despite the kana suggesting a pronunciation of pakkuman. I guess the Puckman issue is more akin to AKB48 SEED vs Kenkyuusei.

It's a deal. As long as you don't call your Street Gangs "Downtown Nekketsu Story". :)

Here's another good one - Lightening Force: Quest for the Darkstar. Does anyone ever call it that? And if they did, would anyone know what they were talking about?
There's a TON of good reasons to use Japanese titles, and if you don't see the reason, I can understand it would come across as pretentious, but I really doubt anyone ever does it just to BE pretentious.
Like, I personally refer to Journey to Silius as RAF World, and Vice Project Doom as Gun-Dec. Why? At least a few reasons - primarily because that is the title on the versions I own, and the one I see all the time. It's even written in English letters in both cases. I also came across the Famicom versions of both games before I ever heard of the western ones. And finally, the Japanese titles are just shorter.

Essentially the names in both case are wildly different from eachother, so I don't see why you would ever argue that the western titles are "more correct", though I do use them in any situation where I expect people I'm talking to to already know the western titles, but figure they never heard the Japanese ones.

Now some Japanese titles are so confusing and very Japanese that I agree I would probably also assume the person who use them to be pretentious, but I honestly can't think of a single example off the top of my head. And of course there's always the chance that the person is just more familiar with the Japanese release.

Yeah. I'm going to roll my eyes if you say Gun-Dec.

:)

It's better if you orignally bought it that way, but (given that it was probably an import) you would need to be 50 years old to pull it off here. Us younger NES fans weren't generally holding a Famicom, a PAL display, and a cache of imported carts at nine or ten years of age.

What's funny here is that five of the Castlevania games actually are just Akumajou Dracula in Japan, since they all deal with the same event.

Nintendo had the chance to do this with the Zelda games, but it looks like fans begged them to release an official continuity that doesn't work too well.

I'd assume someone younger to be more likely to get into the games via imports actually, as imports weren't too common back in the days.

However, Vice: Project Doom was never released in Europe, so I never even heard about the game back then. The only way for me to get it was via import, and there's really no logical argument to go for the North American import over the Japanese one, so I don't see why one title would be more "correct" than the other.

edit: Sorry that I keep going on about this, I don't mean to be troublesome, I just think it's a genuinely interesting subject

Wow, orange808 has burst onto the scene to rival ag99 for title of premier OT mongoloid - on the same page as a formidable ag99 chimpout, even.

Oh thank goodness, for a second I thought I was being pretentious calling the games on my shelf by the names printed on them.

You were being a bit cavalier in the sidescroller thread asking if anyone had finished "Castlevania for x68000." I'm afraid there's no such game, asswipe! You must've meant Akumajou Dracula for x68000. I'll remember to correct you in future, ta.

STOP BEING PRETENTIOUS, WAAA

Hey, anyone want to trade me Ninja Gaiden III for my Ninja Ryukenden III? There the same game rofl! its just mine has Japanese Jargon all over it and I want the US's much sharper difficulty balanc - I mean, I want to not be pretentious when talking about it. PM me with your shipping address and lets work something out. 3;

I originally bought Gun-Dec that way, like two years ago. Am I ok to call it Gun-Dec or do I have to call it Fake Mel Gibson Mullet Boxart '92 presented by American Sammy ? Just trying to think ahead here.

Moving, compelling. Think of the younger NES fans - gotcha.

Not sure how a PAL display would have helped with your import gaming, it was a bitch trying to get up to 60hz when I was a kid.

Well, it would've allowed you to play Mr. Gimmick, the non-pretentiously titled and inferior audio-having Western PAL release of Gimmick! without sacrificing one's tribalistic loyalty to The West. So there's that.

..and a box to deal with the extra 20 volts.

Regardless, I didn't have those things at 9.

And, I already pointed out the difference between disambiguation and being a pretentious prick.

Reading comprehension and gaming skill are clearly not related. :)

If you're using Japanese names to obfuscate, you're a pretentious prick. That's all there ia to it.

I'm not a pretentious prick. 3: You sound like an awfully presumptuous cunt, though. :/ Doesn't make much difference to me tbh. I'm not referring to perfectly good stuff by whatever Billy Bob down in regional marketing thought sounded snappy that day. I do endeavour to supply regional titles in the interests of good communication, but I am a nice prick that way! Otherwise eyes will have to roll I'm afraid!

I call the JP arcade version of Ghouls and Ghosts Daimakaimura purely because it's harder, better, and I genuinely want to make clear that I'm talking about the superior Japanese version and not the nerfed western version.

He's absolutely correct, though. Ghouls n' Ghosts (US) is a watered-down Daimakaimura (JP), just like Ninja Gaiden III (NES) is a toughened-up Ninja Ryukenden III (FC). This stuff is what it is.

Some games are better, some are worse, as Bil pointed out.

Castlevania Bloodlines western version is superior because of the extra difficulty mode it added. Arguably Ninja Gaiden 3's western release is superior too due to boosted difficulty, though that may depend on your tastes. The western versions of Shinobi (PS2) also contain extra difficulty modes, and gore isn't censored (so again, western superiority).

On the other side, Ghouls and Ghosts jp release is superior IMO because there are more enemies on the screen. Which makes a crucial difference as GNG is all about the hectic rng chaos. Biometal is superior due to not having a butchered soundtrack. Super Aleste has more balanced difficulty due to an altered recovery system, a prettier ending cutscene, more voice overs etc.

I really don't get what your problem is. This is a board for people who really like these types of games. Obviously we have some pretty clear cut preferences and a lot of knowledge about the games.

The problem is he doesn't know much about what constitutes making Japanese titles often more worthy to play and reference versus their western counterparts. Therefore it appears as pretension, rather than knowledge or sharing of knowledge.

Since I live in one of the few countries where Mr. Gimmick was actually released, I'll always refer to it as that. The character has just always been "Mr. Gimmick" to me since I was a kid. I know now that the Japanese one is just called Gimmick, but in my headcanon that's just stupid Japanese shorthand, and he's still MISTER Gimmick to you ;)

Did you just call inserting 2 Unlimited tracks as every song "butchering" a soundtrack? Clearly the western versions are far superior!

Not to mention only 5 tracks (for a 6 stage game) total instead of 16.

Never forgive. Never forget.
