What are your favorite attract modes?

Post by JBC »

I often like to leave one playing in my room while I'm watching TV or working on something. Some of them are even really great to sleep to, as long as it isn't overly cacophonous.

There are tons that I like but I'll start by naming The Steel Empire for Genesis/Mega Drive. While I could see some finding the 'film reel' sound effect annoying & the title theme a bit too peppy, it quickly goes into a spot of gameplay from level one with a nice, relaxing vibe. The music in this stage is just a few subdued notes on an infinite loop but it creates this calm yet ominous atmosphere.

Super Aleste/Space Megaforce for Super Famicom/SNES is also pretty great with it's coffee house beats.

Both of these titles have an amazing graphic style of course, so when you happen to look over you'll often catch a glimpse of their lovely worlds on display. Just makes me feel comfortable & helps to block out the stressors of the outside world.

Anyone else get a sense of well-being from doing this? Your picks don't have to be shmups or even classic. Just whatever games you like to leave playing while you're in your personal space.

Jet Set Radio Future immediately comes to mind. (Probably because I played through it recently, but it's still great.)

Mine would sometimes also be something from Sega (such as the original JSR indeed, neat way to impress the visitors too).

Outtrigger's is pretty great.

In fact, the Dreamcast has tons of good attract modes. I left Virtua Fighter 3tb playing for an entire night last week. Not as nice as VF2's on Saturn (with it's amazing music & distant thunder), but still good.

Any Capcom fighter from the 90s does it for me, excellent large portraits and great tunes.

If you leave him alone long enough, the other enemies won't be able to shoot you. This isn't allowed in scoring runs, but you probably already knew that.

I like quite a bit of the older games' attract modes like the one from Galaxian. I especially like the one from Q*Bert where he gets bonked on the head at the end.

I always hated Guile's AI when I was a kid on harder difficulties because of that!!! Eventually I learned to throw weak punch shoryukens from a certain distance to trigger him to flashkick....but I'll always hold a grudge to Guile for that anyways LOL

kev do you have Fightcade on your pc :o

we could have a couple classic SF2 bouts online if you feel like it. I adore the game as well, and I love playing against other peeps I get along well with and that are also passionate about SF. :o

I mainly play SF2 Hyper Fightin' and SSF2X. I also love the Alpha games (mainly Alpha 2) but I'm not as good at them, as I am in SF2.

My handle on there is same as here : FinalBaton

I don't, but my PC is down at the moment while I wait for an Extron unit to arrive at my doorstep anyways. I'll look into it after I get everything up and running. I'm rusty but it would be fun to go some rounds.

I do have HD-remix (as well as a few other fighters) on my PS3 and a fighstick if you have that. My handle on PSN is ShredGuitarKev. I tried to change my ID to ShoryuKev about 5-6 years ago, but when I put in the change request some sort of glitch happened and it marked the user ID as forever taken and I got screwed LOL.

I used to think that too! But then a few months ago there was this story going around.

Disappointing!

Mars Matrix, Super Turbo (this I can play), and 3rd Strike (this I can't).
You're sure to be in a fine haze about now, but don't think too hard about all of this. Just go out and kill a few beasts. It's for your own good. You know, it's just what hunters do! You'll get used to it.

Nam-1975 - "Do I have to go back to the Hell again?! ROOOOOOOOOOOAH!!!"

Garou: Mark of the Wolves - Two cool sequences? Certainly, they existed.

Time Crisis - 1, 2, 3 and 4 all have great attract cinematics.

I really like Shadow over Mystara's attract mode. Quick display of what every character can do plus their stats sheet. I love watching the Dwarf roll under the chimera and shoryuken it from behind. Would be a badass move to pull off in a D&D session.

Speaking of which, in one D&D session of mine I actually axe'd an ogre right in the nuts. It was an instant KO.

There's this video of a walking flashkick done by a player. It was an accident but makes me wonder if it could somehow be replicated and actually be done in real matches.

In the CPS-1 Street Fighter 2 games (at least World Warrior, not sure about the others...) there was a 1/256 chance to do a special move on a regular attack. So that's probably all.

If only I liked its music better, the attract mode of Gotcha Force could be one of my faves. Watching nonetheless recommended.

No Konami love, eh? Surprise Attack's demo really got me the first time I saw it, but I couldn't pick a favorite. Always was partial to the old Konami ones though, especially the ones with screen-height text scrollers (like Super Contra).
