Is it safe to leave CRT in hot car for a few days?

Post by Brad251 »

I am picking up a CRT TV but have to leave it in my car for 2 days until my friend can help me move it. Temps in my area are in the mid 80s right now so the inside of my car is going to be very warm. Is it safe to leave the CRT in there for a few days?

Yeah, people have left CRT's in hot garages and the like for years and they would still work.

Which one did you end up buying?

Tomorrow, I'm meeting with someone for their kv-27fs120 that they are giving away for free. I'm going to test it but the guy says it is in "like new" condition. It was manufactured in 2005 so it is at least nice that it is a later model fs120. I actually had the 24fs100 back in February but got rid of it because the TV wasn't able to display any detail in dark parts of the picture. I fiddled with the service menu and user controls be couldn't fix it. There had to have been something wrong with the TV. For games that didn't have any dark scenes I thought it was a great TV so I think I will be perfectly happy with this fs120 if it really does turn out to be in good condition. Do you have any idea what the difference is between the fs100 and fs120?

I have one of these. Be sure to disable the red push in the service menu (though do be careful in there).

I also played with overscan a bit - tell me if you have a dip in the bottom center of the screen, or any little stray color lines showing up near the screen bottom on a cold start. I have both of those issues on mine. Most Sony flat Trinitrons do have a reputation of having some screen linearity issues like this, except for perhaps a handful of models at the very end of Trinitron production.

What was your strategy for dealing with red push? Is there an FAQ or walkthrough somewhere that you used?

On my JVC I'Art I adjust the R Gain, Color, Tint, and Gamma, and that's about the only combination of stuff I could use. There's still some noticeable push.

On the 27fs120 there's a specific setting you can change in the service menu - it might not look like on/off but it is just as straightforward to deal with. There's details online somewhere.

I remember my Hi-scan trinitron had some settings like GYR and GYB, or something like that, that changed the intensity of those colors relative to green. Totally fixed everything up. Can't find anything similar on my JVC sadly. This tube has so many problems I think I'm going to give it away.

I think the previous owner just left it on 24/7, and it probably needs a recap to deal with some of this stuff, like how the entire picture shrinks when there is a lot of bright white on screen. No big deal since it was free, but I was hoping to add a decent slot-mask tube to my collection.

What I didn't mention is that I actually got a JVC I'Art AV-27FA44 last week off of Kijiji but am not keeping it because it has an issue where the contrast is too intense no matter how much I adjust the sub brightness, sub contrast and user menu controls. I also adjusted the screen knob inside the TV and it didn't help. This is likely caused by problem with one of the components inside the TV. I tested another SD flat screen I'Art model a few days before this one and it had the same problem but I didn't notice how bad it was on my current model until I got it home.

However, I did go through every option in the AV-27FA44 service menu and discovered that the red push option is called NTSC MAT in the V/C(S) menu. There are three different red push settings with 1 being the lowest and 3 being the most intense. Selecting "0" turns red push off but I wouldn't do this because this makes colors look terribly dull. I found "1" to be the perfect setting as this still gives you popping reds without them being overwhelming. I'm not sure what model you have but I would check to see if you have the "NTSC MAT" option in your service menu.

I'm alright with people leaving a noisy kid or dog in a car-stove, but a CRT is going too far.

I'm looking at the service manual for the kv-27fs120. Is the red push option called "AXIS" in the VP1 service group? The description for this option is "R-Y Phase Select". On the FV310 and FV300, the red push option is called "AXNT" but I didn't see that in the fs120 service manual.

Here we go:

Long story short, it looks like the setting for the fs120 red push is AXIS. Set it between 0 and 31 to disable the red push.
