That game is rather old now. I had it to review when I was still in the UK, so I had a Euro copy.
Look at Strider for an excellent example. That game was a fucking thrill ride in 1989.
Yes, and it's very easy as arcade clears go - but we have to remember we're looking at these titles with the perspective of actually being able to relate to the games as they're intended to be approached.

Throw Strider at someone who has plenty of experience with DMC3 and no experience with arcade games and they'll probably get frustrated and impatient pretty quickly.

To be fair, I can't beat World 1 of SMB either, although in my case that's just because I find the game to be relentlessly boring.

DMC3 (and the whole 3D action genre) tends to be overrated in terms of difficulty due to players either being ignorant of overpowered tactics or refusing to use them. It's similar to how many shmups have inflated perceptions of their difficulty as a result of players refusing to use bombs. Playing purely for survival I think MGR is more difficult than DMC games. DMC3 is much easier than DMC1, btw, I never understood why it got the reputation it did. I guess maybe because DMC1 encourages you to abuse the overpowered stuff while DMC3 has that silly style meter to trick you into using shitty weapons/moves.

But eh, difficulty as perceived by the masses is kinda fucked and based more on what has a reputation rather than what is actually hard. People think of Contra as being harder than, say, Gears of War, when the opposite is true, and because they never invest any time learning Contra, the lie goes unchallenged.

I don't get much out of SMB1 either (I can enjoy it... just not really compelled, until like World 7). I really like SMB2 Japan from what I've played of it, though. dojo_b summed up its hard hop/bop appeal better than I can here. I wish the SFC Collection version hadn't cocked up the block-breaking physics.

I think anyone who can play DMC3, or any 3D action game at a high level, could clear some easy arcade games without any trouble (Strider, Cannon Dancer, Metal Slug come to mind). Most games give you options to make things easy (items etc), but there's nothing wrong with that as long as there's a ranking or scoring system in place to tell you that you still suck. Just like with shmups.

There's a ridiculous amount of material - probably best to hang around the front page of Kotaku In Action for the gist of things and the condensed highlights. This has been a two year soap opera with countless inane twists, but the basic plot should be familiar to us all by now: Social Justice Warriors VS Fucking White Males, punctuated by vicious infights and indiscriminately lethal closet-disgorged skeletal hordes. ;3

TBH I really only follow Brianna Wu, whose pretend career as acclaimed industry pro has become a riot in the midst of an escalating trainwreck. My favourite thread from the leak has been the dawning horror of Zoe's group as they realise that in Wu, they've unleashed an automated weapon too deranged to control, an insatiably publicity-hungry beast who'll drown them all in its blowback.

She has a long history of weirdness, but I don't see her going nuclear tbh. More of a crazy old cat lady fate awaits, I suspect.

Lord, when I think of Ayano Koshiro and the rest of Ancient working themselves ragged in pursuit of the ambition that became Bare Knuckle II... never mind true passion like theirs, basic work ethic seems endemically lacking amongst these social media drama queens. Going on a rampage takes more guts and fire than I've seen from any of the marquee names. They're more the Charles Manson type, if anything. I could see a nutty fan doing something appalling, certainly.

That's why I find these Wu/Quinn types so amusing, tbh. You want to develop games, great, get at it. Do the best you have ever done. Attack the weak point of fxxking machine and set the 68000 heart on fire.

In their case, they want the prestige of "Strong Wimmenz in Tech" without any of the requisite work actual superior female developers put in. The result is truly Partridgean farce. At least Juanita is competent and engaging in her scam artistry!

Strange days, Bil. Strange days.

The idea of being "fluid" seeps into all aspects of being, like a virus.
In what sense and to what extent, is he a "game developer"? In his mind, does this question really matter?

Today, "literally", literally doesn't mean "literally" anymore. LITERALLY! Or maybe not, i'm no sure anymore. its fluid :D

How can we even discuss this. Semantics has been attacked by the very same "fluid" virus.

In short; WERE FUCKED!

Literally now literally means figuratively. Fortunately it only means that in a literal sense, so it's still not a real thing.

Chronicles of The Great Sperg War Ch.XVMIII

Uncontrollably Violent Autonomous Social Justice Weapon "Brianna Wu"
(edit: removed from Medium, rehosted)

Brief-ish summary of the AntiGG/Wu liaison, in which high command struggle to harness this volatile force. Randi "MethWhale" Harper's obvious disgust presages Wu's later abandonment to the void of space, where she continues to rage in the twilight of her artificial lifespan. By ProGG war hero GETH-sama, among my favourite characters in this epic tale of sperg conflict. Image Unbridled precision destructor. Obsessively pursues target while explosively fisting its weak points.
Randi Harper wrote:i’m throwing her under the bus — in this chat only, and not publicly — because of her actions.
Oh dear, it's public now. El Gato has left the bag and shattered the sound barrier. I hope these people are well-versed in parkour ninja technique! As the commander's exploits prove (reference The Internet Ruined My Life), this forbidden art is the only thing that'll hold off an enraged Wu! Conventional weapons will have no effect as the banshee closes in, ravening for your tears and cash. I suggest the beleaguered AntiGG high command dip into the Patreon pot, and invest in a fleet of Battle Priuses at the very least.

Remy: I was gonna say I am just glad we have places like this where we can vent and express our frustrations
Randi Harper: indeed. this is not something I ever could have said on twitter.

Cyber Cool Kid Espionage Image (still tho I'M GLAD THE FUCKERS BURNT, THIS IS MY FUCKIN HOBBY, I'D BURN 'EM ALL OVER AGAIN  )

Kiwifarms' Brianna Wu thread (now in its third series) is a handy resource for this ongoing horror show, though beware those rascally flightless birds. Naw it's an okay site, they good kids. I just browse meself. Main point of interest ATM is the Great Kickstarter Backer Rebellion brewing on site "Medium," spearheaded by one Hosk. Either way, it's gonna be good! Hopefully.

My school changed this authority position called "housemaster" to "dean" around last February. I figured this was because "dean" was an established word, so it would be easier for people to understand or something. Nope. Turns out it's because it's not "politically correct" because "master" used be used as short for "slave master". What. I thought I lived in the real world, not fucking South Park. I mean, I thought my school was crazy before, but this is just CWC-level insanity. Not to even mention that they're now saying that a perfectly good (and common) word is now racist and can't even be used anymore.

Why not say "PC master race" is neo-Nazi using the same exact logic?

I bet I'd get a 10-day suspension if I mentioned The Fairly Oddparents because fairies can be a homophobic slur and (in their minds) it implies that gay people make "odd parents" and Cosmo's a gay stereotype (despite being straight).

But a 'Dean' is implicitly male, so they're still sexist and have accomplished nothing.

Of course the real reason for the change is that one of the people involved is a fan of Supernatural, and pushed for this so that they'd have an excuse to say "Dean" out loud more often.

I know how you people feel about me talking about school, but I think this is relevant.

So they have some "assignment" for students this fall that I just found out about:
For fall 2016, NNHS will be exploring "one question" instead of "one book." The question, developed by students and faculty together, is "Why do people put themselves in other people's shoes, and what can we learn from that?" Our goal is for the exploration of this question to support our continued efforts related to anti-bias and cultural competency.

Instead of recommending one book, we are recommending a number of resources that relate to this question and encourage all community members to read/view/listen to at least one recommended resource this summer. Engaging with these resources this summer will support conversation and explorations this fall.

Resources that are not books are available free and online. Links available below.
They linked an Everyday Feminism as a fucking resource. I'm not kidding. Here's part of it:
Beyond that, though, it’s time for those of us who fashion ourselves “allies” or as “currently operating in solidarity with” to have a conversation.

More and more, I am seeing precisely what McKenzie is describing – people of identity privilege who are identifying as “allies” almost as if it is a core part of their identity.

What’s worse, I keep seeing people respond to criticism about their oppressive language or problematic humor with, “But I’m an ally!”

For instance, I recently saw an acquaintance (who notably identifies as Straight) post a pretty problematic joke about Gay men on Twitter.

Aside from expressing my discontent in a tweet, I reached out to her in a private message to explain why I took issue with her joke.

Her response, though, was to say, “Jamie, you know that I’m an LGBT ally! I speak out for Gay rights all the time! This was clearly just a joke.”

And therein lies the problem.

The identification of “ally” was so prominent in this person’s mind that she couldn’t even hear criticism of how her actions were out of alignment with her professed desire to be an “ally!”

So “allies,” let’s talk.
Can someone please explain to me why using "ally" is wrong? This is too tricky for me to decipher.

And again, my public school has a link to Everyday Feminism as a legit resource. What the actual fuck.

The issue in that quote doesn't seem to be the word "ally" by itself, but saying you're an ally of Group X, but then telling offensive* jokes about said group and brushing them off when they tell you that they were offended by your joke at their expense.
*assuming the joke actually was offensive. God knows that's another can of worms by itself.
