Flaws on PVMs fixable with recap?
Hi everyone, I have a couple of PVMs with different flaws, such as a dull image where I really have to boost contrast to max both with the knob and OSD to get acceptable light output, or color bias which doesn't go away even with adjustment in the service menu. I was wondering if it's possible to tell which of these flaws are due to wear on the chassis or tube, and if it's the former, does replacing the caps have any chance of fixing these issues?

You might be able to rule out worn phosphors by displaying a test image showing the primary colors - red, green, and blue. If the screen was kept on for hours and hours on a pure white image, all the colors would be about as dim. But if it was kept on a green screen, you'd have green showing up as dim while red and blue remain quite bright.
That's not the only potential cause of color problems though. Clicking around the Repair FAQ should give some helpful ideas.
